Principal's Message
I want to take this opportunity to thank our entire Lackey community for a smooth opening to the school year. It is amazing to think that we have completed week two of the new school year. The energy is amazing. Let’s keep the momentum going as we settle into the school year. Let’s stay focused on the goal – success for all students.
Parents, please closely monitor your child’s grades and attendance through your ParentVue account. Question your child and follow up with their teachers if you are routinely seeing your child come home without a laptop, a notebook, assignments, books, etc. Learning does not end at the school door. Please ensure that your child arrives at school on time. First period begins at 7:25. If you are dropping your child off after 7:20 your child is guaranteed to be late. They are missing instruction and will not be permitted to make up any work missed during that time.
Come join us tonight for the kickoff to our Charger football season! Tonight, we play Chopticon High School at 7:00 pm in Charger Stadium. Come support our Lackey Chargers! We encourage families to attend our athletic events together. Students love to see their families at events. For your child’s safety and to respect the time of school staff, please ensure that you arrive promptly to pick up your child at the end of the game. Football games are generally over at 9 pm. Additional information can be found in this newsletter regarding ticket sales and restrictions for game attendance.
Badge on! Phone Off! Ready to Learn!
- Badges are required to be worn and visible at all times. Identification badges are integral to the SAFETY of our building. Beginning next week, scanners are replacing keypads in the meal lines. Students will be required to scan their badge. Badges are also required to receive PBIS Charger credits and to spend credits in the school store. Badges are required to enter the building when arriving late and for sign-in. Students may not purchase event tickets (i.e. homecoming) without their school ID. Identification badges are a routine part of our lives in 2024. Parents, please help us to enforce this requirement.
- Charles County Public Schools require all student phones/devices to be powered completely off (not on vibrate or silent mode) and must remain in a non-visible, secure location. The complete rule can be found on pages 29-30 of the CCPS Parent Handbook/Calendar Calendar20242025.pdf (finalsite.net). If you need to reach your child, please call the main office at 301-753-1753. Parents, we need your help to enforce the cell phone policy. Cell phones are a major distraction to learning and are often at the heart of student conflict. Please help us to keep our students focused and safe.
Student Parking
Effective Thursday, September 12, all student drivers must have a 2024-2025 Henry E. Lackey parking permit. The cost is $25 for the year. Message from our School Psychologist
Hello to a New Year from your School Psychologist!
It is the start of a brand-new year, and this always comes with excitement and renewed energy. We are very excited to welcome back our returning students and to meet our new ones and have been working very hard to ready the school for the year. As an unknown author once said, “knowledge is power, and school is where you start to gain your superpower.”
Start your teen off right this year: encourage proper sleep hygiene, provide a quiet place for them to work on their homework, and ask them open-ended questions about their day when they get home. Encourage their attendance to school and to their classes. Also encourage them to ask for help when they think they need some. They can ask you, their teachers, and student services staff.
I am part of student services. Many of you know me but for those who don’t, I just thought I would introduce myself and let you know what I can do to help you!
I am Beverly Hoy, the School Psychologist (yes, still, but I love it!). I have a doctorate in school psychology from the University of Maryland, and many years of experience (although I hope I am always still learning). I love to read and swim. I love to see your kids learn and grow. While I am responsible for the special education testing and therapy cases, I can do so much more. I can:
- Counsel students individually when needed
- Provide community resources to you
- Help with PBIS interventions and Student Support Services
- Provide group therapy
- Address confidential issues discretely if your child is going through a difficult time
- Consult with you about home school relationships
There are probably more, but my point is, if you need me to see a student or help you keep H. E. Lackey safe and positive, please don’t hesitate to contact me via email, call me at the school, or make an appointment with me in person or virtually.
Have a great year!

Free Breakfast
Free Breakfast is available for all students each school day from 7:10-7:25 a.m. Students may grab breakfast in the morning and take it to their first period class. Breakfast, including breakfast brought from home must be consumed within the first 10 minutes of first period. No food is to be consumed during classes at any other time. Parents if your child is late to school, he/she may not bring outside food into the building. Food must be consumed before entering the building when late to school. Students should refrain from bringing fast food for friends. Friends are unaware of dietary restrictions, allergies and parental restrictions.
Per CCPS policy, parents and students may not have food delivered to school during the school day. Food delivery services such as Door Dash and Uber Eats will be turned away. Students who open doors to receive food will be disciplined. The rule exists to help us maintain the safety of our campus.
MyPaymentsPlus is available to monitor your student's lunch account balance and spending.
Request for Excused Absence - Code 13
CODE 13: Other emergency or set of circumstances which, in the judgement of the Superintendent or designee, constitutes a good and sufficient cause for absence from school for up to five school days per school year, including an educational trip or unique life experience. A vacation is not considered an educational trip or a unique life experience. Make-up work will be allowed for approved absences and must be returned to the school three days from the date of return.
An educational trip is one in which either the student is actively receiving instruction through a structured program directly tied to the curriculum, or the student is actively visiting another school, program or college in preparation for potential future enrollment. Siblings may also be excused.
A unique life experience may include an educational field trip, athletic competitions not sponsored by the school, unique family circumstances (i.e., deployed parent visit) and/or career or alternative work experience.
A "vacation" is not an educational trip or unique life experience.
To request an extended absence due to an educational trip or unique life experience, parents can submit a Parent Request Excused Absence (Code 13*) application to the school attendance secretary, Ms. Mullins no later than two (2) weeks prior to the student's first date of absence.
REMINDERS
- Early Dismissal: If a birth parent or legal guardian (appointed by the courts) is sending someone to pick up his/her child early from school for any reason, he/she must send a written note/email indicating who will be picking up the student and giving consent. Upon receiving the note from the birth parent or legal guardian, the school will then verify its authenticity and check ID of the adult who signs the student out of the building.
- Emergency Contact: Listing an emergency contact does not allow the individual to pick up a student at any given time in a non-emergency situation without prior written authorization from the birth parent/legal guardian (per the Charles County Public Schools Handbook: Emergency Card (2024-2025) Maria V. Navarro, Ed.D. Superintendent of Schools, pg. 2).
- Deliveries for students are prohibited. Per the county's parent handbook, students are not allowed to receive outside food deliveries. Deliveries from Grub Hub, Door Dash, Uber Eats, etc. Food deliveries of any kind will be turned away by our main office staff. Deliveries of balloons, cakes, flowers, etc. for students will be stored in the main office until dismissal.

- Parents may drop off lunch for their child only.
- Parents may drop off food or drink during LUNCH PERIOD ONLY
