PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Dear Franklin Academy Families,
Throughout our first semester of the year, our teachers have laid the foundation, set the expectations and taught our students a vast amount of standards. As all of you know, we are well into January and are now in a crucial point in the academic year, or as we like to call it “crunch time”. This means from this point forward until May, we will remain in crunch time mode, where all of us staff, students and parents must give the very best of ourselves and prove who we truly are: hardworking, committed individuals whose efforts can move mountains. As parents it is vital that you understand believing in your student(s) and letting them know they have your full support will make all the difference.
This week I had the great opportunity to participate in a training that will aid me in becoming a better educational leader. This training was offered by the BB&T Leadership Institute and I very grateful to our organization for giving me the opportunity to have this incredible experience. One of my favorite activities during the training was the establishment of a personal/professional purpose and I’d like to share mine. My professional purpose is “ to be able to aid others find their own success”
This week’s newsletter will contain information about the Influenza, as well as reminders of many great things that occurred last week or will be happening this upcoming week.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: MS. SMITH
This week, we have an opportunity to know about Ms. Smith, our assistant principal now for two years.
Ms. Smith has been in the education field since she was 18 years old. She started as a paraprofessional in a program for special needs students while she was in college. After graduating, she has taught Middle School Math, 5th Grade and students who are Deaf or Hearing Impaired.
When she was a student, Math was always her favorite subject, and still is! Ms. Smith enjoys working with numbers and utilizing different parts of the brain to solve mathematical type questions. Math is like a puzzle waiting to be solved!
In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her 3 year old son Hayden. They love to dance, go to the park, go on walks and bike rides, and travel to see their family in different states.
Ms. Smith finds that building relationships with students, families, teachers, and co-workers is the best part of her job as our assistant principal. “We really are one big family and I love the different relationships I have with everyone!”
To the question, what made you decide to become an assistant principal, Ms. Smith said: “I was lucky enough to open the Franklin Academy Cooper City Campus in 2013 as the Special Programs Coordinator and loved the leadership aspect of education. I was seeking opportunities to grow and impact a large population of students. When the position at our Sunrise Campus was offered to me, I was happy to accept the transfer”
As a lifelong athlete, Ms. Smith has always turned to sports as motivation. On quote she really loves is one from Pat Summit – an inspirational and legendary coach for female athletes. This quote is easily applied to all aspects of life: “Winners are not born. They are self-made.”

IMPORTANT: Information About the Flu
The following are answers to questions commonly asked by our parents (Excerpted from www.CDC.gov):
What is influenza (flu)?
The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. Some people, such as older people, young children, and people with certain health conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease), are at high risk for serious flu complications. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccination each year.
How does the flu spread?
Most experts believe that flu viruses spread mainly by droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby. Less often, a person might also get flu by touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or possibly their nose.
What are the symptoms of the flu?
Symptoms of flu include:
fever (usually high)
headache
extreme tiredness
dry cough
sore throat
runny or stuffy nose
muscle aches
Stomach symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, also can occur but are more common in children than adults
If your child(ren) presents any of these symptoms, please visit your doctor and keep him/her home to ensure he/she recovers efficiently.
How long is a person with flu virus contagious?
The period when an infected person is contagious depends on the age and health of the person. You may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick. Most healthy adults may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and 5 to 7 days after becoming sick. Some people, especially young children and people with weakened immune systems, might be able to infect others for an even longer time.
What is the difference between a cold and the flu?
The flu and the common cold are both respiratory illnesses but they are caused by different viruses. Because these two types of illnesses have similar symptoms, it can be difficult to tell the difference between them based on symptoms alone. In general, the flu is worse than the common cold, and symptoms such as fever, body aches, extreme tiredness, and dry cough are more common and intense. Colds are usually milder than the flu. People with colds are more likely to have a runny or stuffy nose. Colds generally do not result in serious health problems, such as pneumonia, bacterial infections, or
hospitalizations. Special tests that usually must be done within the first few days of illness can be carried out, when needed to tell if a person has the flu.
What can I do to protect myself against the flu?
CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine as the first and most important step in protecting against this serious disease. While there are many different flu viruses, the flu vaccine protects against the main flu viruses that research indicates will cause the most illness during the flu season. (Three or four viruses, depending on which vaccine you get.) The vaccine can protect you from getting sick from these viruses or it can make your illness milder if you get a different flu virus.
In addition, you should take everyday preventive actions to stop the spread of germs, like flu. This includes staying away from sick people, frequent hand washing, and cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces, especially if someone is ill, to decrease your chances of getting or spreading the flu. If you are sick with flu, reduce your contact with others and cover your cough to help keep germs from spreading.
How do flu vaccines work?
Flu vaccines cause antibodies to develop in the body. These antibodies provide protection against infection with the viruses that are in the vaccine. The seasonal flu vaccine protects against the main influenza viruses that research indicates will be most common during the upcoming season. About 2 weeks after vaccination, antibodies that provide protection against influenza virus infection develop in the body.
At what age should a child be vaccinated?
CDC recommends that everyone aged 6 months and older get a flu vaccine. Children younger than 6 months are too young to get vaccinated. It’s especially important that their contacts be vaccinated to protect them from possible exposure to the flu.
What are influenza antiviral drugs? Influenza antiviral drugs are prescription medicines that fight against the flu by keeping flu viruses from reproducing in your body. Antiviral drugs can make your illness milder and make you feel better faster.
They also may also prevent serious flu complications. This could be especially important for people at high risk of flu complications. Antiviral drugs work best if started soon after getting sick (within 2 days of symptoms).
WIDA ACCESS for ELLs 2.0
ONLY students who are currently receiving accommodations in the classroom setting through the ESOL program will be administered the WIDA ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 assessment.
Here at Franklin Academy Sunrise, the testing window is from January 29th to March 16th. Our students will be testing in this window during scheduled times throughout the school day. Please make sure the students are prepared for the school day with a healthy breakfast and plenty of sleep the night before.
Please review the Frequently Asked Questions below for further information:
What is ACCESS for ELLs 2.0? ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 is an English language proficiency assessment for Grades K–12. The test is administered every year to help school districts monitor the English language development of students identified as English language learners.
What is the purpose of the test?
ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 measures students’ abilities to understand and produce English used within school settings. The four sections of the test are Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing.
Why does my child have to take the test?
Your child is identified as an English language learner. Your child will take the test every year until his/her scores meet the criteria to exit the language support program. Contact your child’s school for more information on how your child was identified as an English language learner.
How are the test scores used?
Scores from ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 can be used in many ways. Parents can use the scores to advocate for their child. Teachers use the scores to plan instruction and assessments. Districts use the scores to evaluate their language support programs, to monitor student progress in acquiring English, and to determine if a student is eligible to exit an English language support program. Scores are also used to meet federal and state accountability requirements.
Contact Ms. Nelson, Special Programs Coordinator, if you have questions about WIDA ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 at 754-206-0850 ext. 5305.
