October News #readytofly
A Note from Mrs. Phillips
Wow, we are almost at the end of the first quarter of school. Teachers will be reaching out to schedule parent-teacher conferences for October 16th. School will not be in session on that day; enjoy it as a family! We do ask that you attend conferences. One thing we have noticed is the need for more parental involvement in our students' education. We need you now more than ever. Your involvement at home plays a critical role in shaping your child's educational success. I'd like to share a few ways you can actively support learning beyond the classroom.
Encouraging Conversations to Build Vocabulary and Background Knowledge
Engaging in regular conversations with your child is a simple yet powerful tool that can significantly enhance their vocabulary and background knowledge—both of which are essential for school readiness. Research shows that early language development is closely linked to future academic achievement. A study published by Harvard University emphasizes that “talking with your children from a young age and encouraging dialogue not only improves their vocabulary but also their understanding of the world around them" (Harvard University’s Center on the Developing Child). Asking open-ended questions and discussing their day at school will help build those foundational language skills.
Connecting with Your Child Amid Technology's Distractions
We all know how technology can sometimes take over family time, particularly during meals. The dinner table used to be a place for rich conversations where family members connected and shared their day. Now, smartphones and devices often replace those valuable interactions. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, “limiting screen time and encouraging family discussions not only strengthens family bonds but also gives children a chance to express their thoughts, build communication skills, and develop emotional resilience" (AAP, 2016). Taking a few moments daily to ask your child about their school day, their friends, or what they are learning helps you stay connected and engaged in their education.
Supporting Learning at Home
Aside from conversations, simple activities such as reading together, involving your child in cooking, or playing educational games can make learning feel enjoyable and meaningful. By turning everyday experiences into learning opportunities, you are reinforcing the skills they are building at school.
In a world where schedules are busy and technology competes for our attention, let's remember the importance of meaningful communication with our children. These conversations not only support their learning but also provide them with the confidence and background knowledge needed to succeed in the classroom.
Thank you for your continued support and involvement in your child’s education. Together, we can make a positive difference in their academic journey. I am always available to you via Dojo, email, Facebook or phone. Please allow 24 hours for a returned response. Important upcoming dates are listed below. Have a great October!
