Halloween Details
This festival is one of our favorite ones at school! We will celebrate Halloween on Thursday, 10/31, with our traditional in-house assembly here at school. We will have a half day and dismiss per our half day dismissal schedule. The early dismissal will give families a little time before going to the Ashland Halloween parade. Here at school, the children come dressed in costumes and we celebrate with music, pumpkins and a parade around the campus.
Costume guidelines: When we think of getting dressed up, let’s ensure that we are thoughtful about the costumes we choose to wear to school. We want to be mindful that all students will feel safe and honored.
- Be creative and keep in mind we have young ones on campus.
- Please no scary costumes, blood, or weapons. Just bring fun.
- Reminder!! It is important that we can identify students and see their faces. Please, no masks.
- NO CANDY is to be brought to school on or after Halloween.
- If you’re not sure if your child’s costume will “work”, please check in with their class teacher before Halloween.
Aside from these guidelines, please talk with your student to make sure that the costume that they have selected does not portray a stereotyped image of a culture or group of people. In addition, please help students make sure that their costume is not offensive to any racial, ethnic or religious group, or any people with disabilities or illnesses. While students might choose to dress as a famous person or character who’s identity is different than their own, please reinforce the importance of not darkening skin or using makeup to change a child’s skin color to match the person who they are dressing up to be. Students are often unaware of the long history these traditions have and that it can be hurtful to those people.
We look forward to celebrating with all of the students on Halloween and appreciate your help in making sure that it is a fun day for everyone. If you have any questions at all regarding this day, please feel free to reach out.
Pumpkin Carving on Wednesday
Children will be carving pumpkins at school on Wednesday, October 30. The school will supply all carving tools and your child will bring home their pumpkin on Thursday afternoon.
Thank you to the parents that have signed up to volunteer with pumpkin carving. click HERE to view the time you signed up to help!
We will carve rain or shine!
Dia de los Muertos and School Ofrenda
An ofrenda (Spanish for "offering") is the offering placed in a home altar during the annual and traditional Mexican Día de los Muertos celebration. Our school regularly recognizes this tradition and is creating an ofrenda in our main hallway as part of our celebration of this time of year. Students are welcome to bring in photos of human loved ones who have passed to place on the ofrenda (this year lovingly prepared by our ACORN teacher, Ms. Leann). If you would like to add a photo, please label it clearly and expect that it will possibly not find its way home to you (we're happy to make a copy of it here and let you take your photo home).
On Friday, November 1, we will celebrate the lives of those we loved with our Dia de los Muertos assembly for the children, hosted by our Spanish teacher, Ms. Lawton-Diez. We are excited to continue this tradition at our school, honor this special time of year, and share this beautiful cultural event with our students. The assembly is thoughtfully presented with our young students in mind.
Thank you Ms. Leann and Ms. Lawton-Diez!
Help with Attendance Communication
Thank you so much for keeping us informed when your child needs to stay home from school. As part of our increased safety measures this year, we are taking attendance earlier in the day and will notify families if a student is marked absent and we have not yet heard from a parent. While you are welcome to loop in the teacher of your student, please make sure you are communicating with the front office by either emailing amy.bull@siskiyouschool.org or calling 541-482-8223 ext. 14 before the school day begins whenever possible. Amy will also notify the teacher once she has received your message.
When leaving a phone message, please speak clearly and provide your child’s first and last name, grade, the date, and the reason for their absence. This helps us ensure that we have accurate records. Thank you for your help with this!

Blue Heron Class - 7th Grade
Greetings from the 7th grade classroom!
The Blue Heron Class is so very grateful to everyone who helped make our class play a great success. We were extremely happy to perform Alice in Wonderland and we really appreciate your support. Thank you!
This week each 7th grader will present their findings on a European country of their choosing. Beginning three weeks ago, each student started researching the physical and political traits of a nation, its language and governmental structure, special cultural aspects, and more. These projects hone and enhance the development of many important skills, including typing & keyboarding, research (both online and in the library), writing reports, the creation of a slide show, and ultimately, public speaking. These presentations are a vital part of a much larger European Geography Block. This block has included the creation of beautiful maps, the study of countries and capitols, new awareness of various regions, and the prominent topographical features of the continent.
Our next block will be Biology. We’ll study the life of cells, their structure, function, processes, genetics and heredity, and see them through microscopes! It’s a busy time of happy learning in the Blue Heron classroom. Plus, this week we carve pumpkins with our 2nd grade buddies, and on Thursday we perform the spooky dance at Halloween Assembly. So much fun!
Happy Halloween,
🎃 ~ Mr. Beech
