12/23-1/3 Winter Break No School
Dear Parents,
Welcome to the holiday season as we head into our winter break this December! We are continuing our commitment and focus on student learning and encourage you to contact us with any questions. Our staff continues to collaborate and make strides in reaching our School Improvement Plan (SIP) goals. This year our school improvement goals are to increase the number of students who are performing at grade level in Literacy and Math and maintain an effective learning climate with a focus on challenging our students during the learning process through dialogue. We utilize action learning cycles to identify where we are going, where we are now, and what are our next steps, and then measure our progress in improving student learning. Our SIP plan includes initiatives that focus on including cognitive conflict in our teaching activities, increasing exploratory talk among students, and using our School Pledge as a vehicle to create our culture at Smith School. In addition, we are adding a student attendance goal to our School Improvement Plan. We need students to consistently be in attendance so they can learn to their greatest potential.
I mentioned the importance of consistent attendance and would also like to emphasize the importance of students being at school on time in the morning. Due to some recent student safety concerns, we are requiring parents to sign-in their late arriving student(s).
So, beginning this month in December, if you are ever running late and arrive after the tardy bell at 8:00 a.m., please park in a parking space and walk your child up to the front lobby to sign them in.
As a reminder, students should be in the building at 7:55 a.m. so they can be in their classroom learning at 8:00 a.m. This means they need to be dropped off between 7:45 - 7:50 a.m. so students can get to their grade level door and then be let into the building.
When students are dropped off around 8:00 a.m. or later, they still need to walk through the hallway, hang up their coats, gather their belongings for class, and grab their breakfast at the breakfast station. This takes time and they miss out on morning announcements and learning time. Also, when students arrive late to the classroom it is a disruption to the teachers and rest of the students in that class.
So, I am asking if you can please make some adjustments to your morning routine so that our students arrive to school on time.
If there is something we can help you with in this regard or you have any questions, please reach out to me.
I want to thank all our families for your continued support of Smith Elementary School as we do everything we can to continually improve student learning. As we enter the time with colder months ahead, please have your children dress appropriately for the cooler temperatures. We do continue to go outside for recess, unless it is extremely cold. Please know we will not allow students who don’t have snow pants and snow boots to play in the snow at recess.
As always, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Pete Clabough, Ed.D.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR SCHOOL NURSE 💙
Smith Families,
the health office is in need of girls & boys underwear & clothes sizes 5-8. Anything is appreciated 💙
PETS
I know it is super exciting for students when their favorite 4 legged friend is at dismissal to pick them up or walks to school with them in the morning. However, we need your help. Some of our students are afraid of dogs, allergic to them, and sometimes they have accidents on the grass leaving some unwanted presents. Students also have a difficult time with boundaries and may rush up to the pet. This in turn can be overwhelming for your pet and they may act unpredictable causing harm. I regret that for the safety of everyone I have to ask you please leave your pets at home. I sincerely thank you for your understanding in this matter.
