Boals Weekly
Boals Elementary the one where the story begins with us!
Message from Principal Beran
Happy Thursday Boals' Families,
It has been wonderful seeing all of our students and hearing about their Thanksgiving break. We have so much to be thankful for here at Boals.
Please mark your calendars for Thursday, December 8th for our 4th and 5th grade Choir Performance at 5:30 pm, in our Boals Cafeteria. Our students will be presenting "POP Kids." We are so excited to watch them perform. They have been practicing for this big debut for months. Thank you so much for all our parent volunteers and Mrs. Gassensmith for providing this program for our students.
It is hard to believe that in three weeks we will be out for Winter Break. During this time helping students continue to build their learning stamina is important for all of our learners.
Here is an article adapted from Jennifer Cox, "Teaching Strategies for Persistence," that reinforces the importance of perseverance, grit and determination that we apply within our classrooms. Some of the tips are great ideas to implement at home.
Students who have built up their stamina and who have mastered persistence are able to work through challenges and deal with failures better than students that don’t. Persistent students can easily achieve their goals and understand that they may hit some bumps in the road, but they are able to get through them. Just as a runner has to build stamina in order to finish a race, children need to learn how to be persistent in order to succeed in school. Athletes take the steps that are necessary for them to reach their final goal; they show up for practice, do whatever it takes to prevent injury, and talk themselves through the tough times. If they don’t take these steps then they will be unable to meet their goal. Students who do not engage in positive self-talk, and who do not have the stamina to keep going when the times get tough, will have a very hard time in school. Teaching strategies to focus on persistence can help students learn to build up and develop their stamina.
1. Teaching Strategies for Positive Self-Talk
Have students use works like “I can do this” and “I can get through this.”
2. Model What Persistence Looks Like
Sharing with your children specific examples of how you overcame something, and the steps that you took to get through it is a great way to model persistence.
3. Review and Repeat
Repetition strategies are the best way to develop stamina and get your students to learn the value of persistence. When consistently repeated over time, using strategies like modeling, connecting effort, and achievement using technology, and using encouragement, students will indeed develop the stamina needed to achieve their goal.
Helping our students have persistence will help them be able to have determination, set goals and aim for success. Thank you for working together with us at home.

Notes from Mrs. Isler, School Counselor
A big thanks to all of our Boals families for being so generous with the donations for the Angel Tree donations this month!! We were able to help 35 children to have gifts this year! Some of our 5th grade Student Council members were able to help load the truck with the gifts and they were amazed at all of the bags of items, bikes, and scooters. Thank you all!

Notes from Nurse Olson, Boals School Nurse
Dear Boals Parents,
With all the talk of Coronavirus, Flu, and RSV in the news, I wanted to remind you that the CDC says the best way to avoid getting sick is still to wash your hands. The most common mistake people make is rinsing the soap off before they’ve thoroughly scrubbed every surface of their hands with it. Soap can’t help you if it’s already down the drain! I came across this video and wanted to share it with you. Yes, you have heard you need to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds, but what does that actually look like? It’s probably longer than you think!
Please take 20 seconds to view this with your children tonight! https://www.goodmorningamerica.com/wellness/video/long-wash-hands-69341671
As always, if your child is sick, please keep them home. You can find the FISD Exclusion for Illness information here: http://www.friscoisd.org/departments/health-services/school-attendance-guidelines
Other important ways to keep illness from spreading include covering all coughs and sneezes with your elbow instead of your hands {ask your kids to show you how!}, keeping your hands away from your face at all times, and routine cleaning of high-touch areas at home.
Wishing you a happy and healthy winter!
Sincerely,
Nurse Olson

Get a Background Check and Explore Volunteer Opportunities
FISD Board Policy requires that each volunteer, chaperone, and/or mentor undergo a background check before working with students. Frisco ISD uses VOLY, a volunteer management system, to complete background checks and to post volunteer opportunities. To work with students on campus, you will need to create a VOLY account by visiting https://friscoisd.voly.org.
You will be prompted to complete the background check during your VOLY account creation process. Keep an eye on your inbox for your background check approval (the process can take up to 3-5 business days). VOLY will send you customized e-mails with opportunities that may interest you for volunteering.
Family and community members must complete a background check once every year starting in July.
If you need help, email volunteer@friscoisd.org, call 469-633-6860 or complete a ticket through the VOLY support system.

Winter Weather Procedures
FISD closely monitors weather forecasts in anticipation of possible ice and/or snow accumulation. During and after a weather event, the District coordinates closely with the City of Frisco and other area emergency management officials to determine the status of local road conditions. This information is used to make a final decision about whether to open schools no later than 5:30 a.m. each school day.
Frisco ISD will notify families via email and text in the event of a school closure or delayed start. The District and campus websites will also be updated with alerts of school closures, as well as the District’s Facebook and Twitter accounts. This information will also be shared with local television and radio stations. You can ensure you are subscribed to text messages from Frisco ISD by texting “Y” or “Yes” to 67587.
If FISD does not communicate with you regarding a school closing or delayed start, there are no changes to the regular school day.
Reporting an Absence
All absences, both excused and unexcused, count toward the state’s compulsory attendance law. When a student's attendance drops below 90 percent but remains at least at 75 percent of the days the class is offered, the student may earn credit for the class or a final grade by completing a plan approved by the principal. All absences can easily be submitted in the form at the top of our campus website. Learn more about the attendance policy.
COVID-19 Absences
For the 2022-23 school year, students with a positive COVID test will receive up to five excused absences per occurrence. Parents must submit a picture or copy of a positive COVID test and students quarantined without a positive COVID test may be excused with a parent note for each day absent. These parent notes will count toward the eight parent notes allowed by Frisco ISD. All absences will be considered when working through 90% attendance for credit and should be submitted in the form at the top of our campus website.
Sign up for Emergency Alerts
Frisco ISD utilizes the School Messenger text messaging service on a limited basis to communicate timely information such as school closures/delays or campus emergencies. Not sure if you are signed up? Opt in by texting “Y” or “Yes” to 67587. This system is maintained separately from Remind, which many teachers and coaches use to text message students and parents.
Report Concerns with STOPit
As a reminder, students and parents can report incidents of bullying or harassment online using our District’s anonymous reporting system called STOPit. Frisco ISD collaborates with the City of Frisco, City of McKinney, Town of Little Elm and the City of Plano Police and Fire/EMS to keep our schools safe.
As partners, safety is a top priority, and our campus relies on the continued support of students, parents and the community to keep schools safe. By submitting a report, campus administrators receive a notification regarding the concerns you share.
STOPit is not an emergency response service. If you believe your call requires immediate police, fire, or paramedic response, call 911. STOPit does not provide counseling or clinical advice. If you feel you need this type of intervention, please seek the assistance of a qualified clinical or medical professional. Report concerns responsibly via the StopIt App or to the authorities.
Learn more about STOPit and how to report.
Access the Elementary Curriculum Outline
Frisco ISD parents have access to the curriculum outline and pacing guides used Districtwide for each grade level. The curriculum outlines are created and revised each year by District educators and are rooted in the statewide curriculum standards provided by the Texas Education Agency, called the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS.) Access the curriculum and pacing page.
Enhanced Police Coverage
Frisco ISD is partnering with local police departments to increase the number of officers assigned to work at or near the District’s elementary schools. The extra patrols and campus visits are intended to provide an additional layer of safety and security during the school day. Learn more.
Gold Cards for Senior Citizens
The Gold Card allows those who are age 60 and older and live within the FISD enrollment boundaries to get free admission to most District athletic and fine arts events. The 2022-23 Gold Card is now available and can be picked up on weekdays at the FISD Administration Building (5515 Ohio Drive) or the FISD Athletic Office (6950 Stadium Lane). A picture ID with a home address must be shown in order to receive a Gold Card. More information is available here.
Check Out the Community Folder
The community folder area of the District website is full of advertisements and links to information about goods and services that may be of interest to the FISD community. You can find everything from discounts on kids’ camps to volunteer opportunities. The folder does not represent the viewpoint of the District and is not an endorsement of the advertiser, products, or services listed.

School Cafeteria Returns to Paid Meals
