Hopewell Middle School: The Buzz
Reaching the Hearts and Minds of Every Child
What's Happening at The Hive?
I first wanted to share a little information about our lockdown incident last week. To be honest, we still don't know why we were put into lockdown, but I know there was a reason. Generally, we go into lockdown when there is a situation in the neighborhood, that could...potentially...cause a threat to the campus. In the past, we have had a domestic disturbance and a person fleeing the police when they attempted to take him into custody cause us to go into lockdown. These things happen, and I am grateful that Mr. Yarbrough, our new Director of Safety and Security always errs on the side of caution when it comes to keeping our kids safe. In a lockdown, two things happen simultaneously: we immediately lock all doors that lead into the building and get all students in athletics/PE/Portables inside the building. Once that is done, students and staff are free to move around the building as usual and we follow our daily schedule. One frustration for parents is that we cannot allow anyone in the building. Thankfully, Mr. Yarbrough was at our campus quickly and permitted parents to come inside to pick up students. After a lockdown last year, it was suggested that I notify parents ASAP. This time, as soon as I was able to verify that all students were in the building, that is exactly what I did. I am learning our new communication system and will send text alerts as well as emails with any time-sensitive information.
Last week we continued to learn the new routes to the cafeteria. I can't tell you how enjoyable lunchtime is now with the smaller lunches. A few of you have joined your child for lunch....we absolutely welcome this. Please know that the upper commons are reserved just for this purpose during lunch hours. While we love having parents on campus, it is not appropriate for parents to eat lunch in the cafeteria with other children. This is for our kids' privacy and safety. Your child is welcome to invite one or two friends to eat with you, but it has to be in the upper commons area.
Our fall sports are off to a great start. Cross Country can be seen out running on the school grounds, and volleyball performed great in their scrimmage against Deerpark.
Finally, we have added quite a few new staff members to the Hive, and I will be introducing one per week right here in The Buzz. Have a great week everyone!!
Introducing Mr/Coach Norris
Mr. Norris was born and raised in Fullerton, CA. Having graduated from Chapman University in the city of Orange, CA, he possesses a Bachelor's Degree in Kinesiology. His passion has always been with athletics and the science behind it.
In January 2009 he moved to Georgetown and has been here in Texas for some time now. He married his wife, Jennifer, in 2012 and they adopted their lab mix, Ranger, that same year. In November 2015 their son, Thomas, joined the Norris clan!
Mr. Norris is obsessed with Ancient Roman history, movies and books about Ancient Rome, football, The University of Texas Longhorns sports, and lame jokes that make him, and others, laugh.
In his time as a teacher, he has taught World Cultures, ELA, and Reading. While in education, he has also coached football, track & field, along with girls’ golf. This year he will be working with the Athletic/PE and 6th grade Science Departments. Welcome to The Hive Mr. Norris!!
Congratulations Ms. Faulkner!
Congratulations to Mrs. Faulker ! She is one of our Spanish teachers extraordinaire who recently was granted $2,000.00 to purchase books in a foreign language. Research suggests that reading books in a foreign language enhances learning through sight recognition of vocabulary and visual application of grammatical rules. Unlike didactic teaching or even television programs in another language, reading allows a student to absorb material at his or her own pace. Students who are hesitant to speak a new language often have more confidence once they have read and understood a story. The stories provide a springboard to interest them in speaking in a new language. Mrs. Faulkner’s goal is to increase by 20% the number of students completing Spanish courses with grades of 90 and above by the end of the 2019-2020 school year. Congratulations to Hopewell’s amazing Spanish teacher!
