Staff Spotlight
Our spotlight employee and our pick for the RIROE's November Employee of the Month is our Science teacher, Mr. Wilken. Mr. Wilken is in his 13th year with East Moline Schools. He is a UT graduate and attended grade school and middle school in Silvis. He was hired after graduating from Rockford College where he also played football. Mr. Wilken taught Kindergarten for a year, 3rd grade for 8 years, and finally moved into his present position 4 years ago. His whole professional career has been at Bowlesburg. He contributes to the conversations/decisions that make Bowlesburg a great school by serving on the Building Leadership Committee and the District Science Committee.
Mr. Wilken was chosen by Bowlesburg's staff because he will help out whenever and wherever we need him. He is known for his positive attitude and playful personality. Building administrators have asked for his help in areas that are not his responsibility on numerous occasions, and he has stepped up every time without hesitation. This year, the after-school art program was viable because he and two other teachers volunteered to assist. Without their help, Bowlesburg’s students would not have had this opportunity. These teachers expect nothing in return, and we are grateful for them. Our students love Mr. Wilken and are always happy when Science is in their day’s schedule. He says the best part of teaching is “watching the lightbulbs go off in students’ heads”.
In his free time, he enjoys building things, helping out his neighbors, coaching his children's sports' teams, and spending time with his wife of 12 years, Kayla, and their children, Kenzingten and Harrisen.
Thanks for everything you do Mr. Wilken and congratulations on your award!
Supporting Your Students At Home
As you may have heard from your students, we have started our "Bowlesburg Families" again this school year. Like last year, your student will be part of a small family within the school, consisting of students from across different grade levels and a staff member. The families will meet on our half days and grow together across the school. Here is a little bit about our Bowlesburg School Families.
Bowlesburg Families: The whole idea of creating classroom Families is to build a community within the school. This includes all staff members and kids intermingling amongst different grade levels. The topics for each gathering are meaningful and focused on Social Emotional Learning. We hope to build relationships across grade levels and all staff. We feel building these relationships are of great value to create a community in which we all feel a part of.
At Bowlesburg we encourage students to create meaningful connections and friendships. School families will help create the positive climate that is integral to academic success.

Birthday Snacks and School Wellness Policy
If you or your student is planning to bring snacks to school, please follow the District Wellness Policy.
In accordance with the Wellness Policy:
1. ALL SNACKS PROVIDED AT SCHOOL WILL COMPLY WITH THE FEDERAL SMART SNACK GUIDELINES This means that we have to make sure that we are giving students healthy items such as: *fruits and vegetables *low sugar snacks *low fat snacks
2. ALL SNACKS/TREATS BROUGHT INTO THE SCHOOLS MUST BE PREPACKAGED (no homemade treats). Due to the increase in severe food allergies, all food must not only comply with the Smart Snack guidelines but they must also be packaged with a listing of ingredients. Fruits and vegetables do not have to follow this guideline. Healthy snacks are available to purchase from the Food Service Office on the district website.
3. WE ARE MOVING AWAY FROM USING FOOD AS INCENTIVES and FOODS FOR CELEBRATIONS. We want our students to know that celebrating a birthday doesn’t have to mean treats. It can be as simple as a teacher offering a special activity for that child to celebrate a birthday. Please see our website for more information regarding our new wellness initiatives.
