Message from the Principal
Kellogg Families,
Welcome to the 2024-2025 school year! It is with great anticipation and excitement that we welcome 6th graders to the Kellogg community on Tuesday, August 27th and all students back on Wednesday, August 28th.
Thank you to all our teachers and staff members for working collaboratively last week and throughout the summer to prepare for our students' return. Also, a huge thank you to so many student, parent, and staff volunteers who came to Community Care Day and to help prepare beginning-of-year packets last week.

First Day of School (Reminder)
The first day of school for 6th grade students will be on Tuesday, August 27th. All students return on Wednesday, August 28th.
Student schedules can be viewed on ParentVue.
In addition, on the first day of school lists will be posted in the cafeteria. The lists will indicate students' first period class. Many staff members will be available to help students find their first period class. Students will then receive a printout of their full schedules from their first period teacher.
Student Schedules (New)
Student schedules can be viewed on ParentVue. We appreciate your patience as we welcomed team members back last week and they have been working diligently to adjust schedules.
Keep in mind, some classes are Quarter-long classes, some classes are for a Semester, and others are for the full school year. Before you or your student reaches out with questions, we want to share some clarifying items here.
We are not adjusting schedules for the following requests below. Calling and emailing about the following items will not initiate a change:
- I don’t like my teacher and want a different teacher.
- I want to be with my friend in X class instead of Y class.
- I want X class at a certain time of the day.
- I don’t want to try that elective. (Middle school is a time of growth and exploration. Trying new things is age-appropriate in school, especially with regard to electives).
- I have too much PE in my schedule (the minutes for PE have increased for the state, so the goal is to have 3 quarters total of PE in each schedule each year).
- I should not have Study Skills. Students with IEPs have a Study Skills class in their schedule in Middle School as part of their IEP minutes for services. Once school begins, if you believe that the IEP needs to be discontinued or adjusted, you can speak with your student’s case manager.
- I should not have a Math support or an English support class. Students are placed in these classes due to test scores below the 20th percentile, indicating that they need added instructional support in their school day.
The following types of schedule errors will be worked on for corrections by our team:
- I am in the wrong level of Math (acceleration was through data on tests and confirmed last year. (If there was no confirmation of an accelerated Math pathway, then the current Math course is correct).
- I have two periods of PE in a single day.
- I don’t have a Spanish Immersion class in my schedule (if DLI student).
- I have an IEP and am missing the Study Skills class in my schedule for added support.
Action Item
- If one of the schedule errors mentioned above impacts your student, please complete this form.
- No need to e-mail or call the school for course changes. You will be directed to complete the form.
School Traffic Circulation Map (New)
School traffic circulation maps are visual representations that outline the planned flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic around a school campus during drop-off, pick-up, and other times when school-related traffic is high. These maps are designed to help parents, students, school staff, and drivers understand the most efficient and safe routes for entering, exiting, and navigating within the school premises.
Our circulation maps also include nearby Park and Walk locations. These are sites near the school where families can park or students can be dropped off and walk the remainder of the distance to the school site, reducing car traffic in front of the school and allowing you to skip waiting in the drop-off line while students start the day with healthy physical activity, arriving at school more ready to learn. Some Park and Walk locations are at nearby parks, while others encourage families to use on-street parking within the school neighborhood.
Please utilize Park and Walk locations and avoid dropping off and picking up students at the front of the school along 69th Avenue or in the parking lot.

Message from PTSA (Reminder)
Welcome new and returning Cougars! We're excited to see students and families this week!
Please mark your calendars with a few important dates:
- Tuesday, August 27th at 9:15 AM = Stop by the basketball courts after you drop off your sixth graders to meet other parents and PTSA board members.
- Friday, August 30th at 4:00pm = PTSA popsicle sale after school
- Thursday, September 19th at 6:30pm = First PTSA meeting in the cafeteria
You can also take this opportunity to join the PTSA by visiting https://www.oregonpta.org/membership. There is a $2 processing fee to join online. To avoid the fee, you can wait until school starts and pay by cash or check.
Sun Extended-Day Programming (Reminder)
Fall SUN Extended-day Programming will take place from September 30th-November 22nd, 2024.
Enrollment forms will be ready by September 9th.

Free Meals for All Students (Reminder)
Portland Public Schools Nutrition Services is happy to announce all students will be able to enjoy breakfast and lunch at no charge for the 2024-25 school year. One breakfast and one lunch will be provided to all students at no charge each day and families do not need to submit a free and reduced-price meal application.
Due to this change in services, our kitchen teams will no longer be able to take cash or check payments. If students bring their lunch from home and want milk, they must choose two other foods – such as a fruit and vegetable – at no charge. Milk can no longer be purchased separately.
Suggested Supply List (Reminder)
As our Kellogg families prepare for the new school year, below is a list of suggested school supplies. Supplies will be available for any families who need assistance.

- School officially starts at 9:15 AM and dismisses at 4:00 PM.
Throughout the school year there are Staff Meeting Days and Early Release Days.
- On Staff Meeting Days, school officially starts at 9:30 AM and dismisses at 4:00 PM.
- On Early Release Days, school officially starts at 9:15 AM and dismisses at 1:45 PM.

Schoolwide Expectations (Reminder)
At Kellogg we are proud of our schoolwide expectations as they provide our students with safe, structured, and productive learning environments. Please take the time to review some of our expectations below.
Cell Phones and Technology Devices
Cell phones and all personal technologies (e.g. gaming devices, wireless headphones, Bluetooth speakers, etc.) are expected to be off and away during the school day. Students are expected to keep cell phones and technology devices off and away in the hallways, restrooms, and at lunch recess as well. If a student is spotted with a cell phone or technology device, it will be immediately confiscated and taken to the front office. Students with repeated cell phone or technology infractions will be placed on individualized cell phone and technology plans.
Backpacks
In alignment with many other middle schools in the District, all backpacks must be stored in lockers during the school day. Backpacks clutter classroom spaces and items are frequently lost or stolen unless they are stored safely in a locker. Students will use their binders to carry their learning materials throughout the school day.
Learning Logs
To help students stay organized and keep track of important dates and deadlines, students will be issued a Learning Log. Be sure to check your student's Learning Log regularly to stay up-to-date with your student's assignments, tests, and other announcements. Learnings Logs will also serve as the student's hall pass when students leave the classroom during non-transition times. It is critical that students do not lose their Learning Log.
Toys and Valuable Items
Students should leave all toys, valuable items, and any item that can cause safety concerns or distractions at home. Leaving these items at home will ensure items are not lost or stolen.
Closed Campus
Kellogg is a closed campus. All visitors must check-in at the front office. Students must be signed out and picked up by a parent or guardian in order to leave campus before dismissal time. Additionally, our school will not accept DoorDash, Uber Eats, or other deliveries to students. Parents and guardians are welcome to drop off lunch items for their students at any time.

Student safety, student well-being, and student learning is our top priority. If you ever need to speak to a teacher, counselor, administrator, or any staff member, please call the front office or e-mail the individual directly to schedule a meeting. Unannounced meetings are often difficult to accommodate as school staff have busy and tight schedules. In particular, before school, after school, and lunch times are the busiest times in schools as most staff members are on duty to ensure student safety. Thank you for your support and understanding!
