Trident Leads
Term 1 Week 8 - 26th March 2021
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Kia ora e te whanau,
As I write this newsletter we await tonight’s results for our Volleyball Senior Boys’ A Team playing in the national finals against Rangitoto College. The coaches are so proud of their performance – along with all the other Trident teams who have been playing in the tournament this week – and of their ability to reflect the school’s values in their efforts. The respect they display to the officials and the other teams, the courage they demonstrate when they step up for the challenges they face and their work in performing at such a high level. We have our fingers crossed and will be watching online at 5pm – follow the link to join the match - https://digitalvision.live/livestreams/nzss-court2-live/ -Thanks to the coaches whose considerable efforts lead our students to these experiences; we are lucky to have so many managers and coaches across the codes at trident who support our students sporting lives.
This week we had a visit from Cathy Stephenson, from the Ministry of Education based in Rotorua to discuss the free school meals programme. It was good to be able to discuss with the Cathy the clear need that some of our whanau and community have for the food and the importance that we have placed as a school on sharing the kai together to support everyone having a healthy lunch. Cathy was keen to share the requirements that the ministry have for the providers to ensure the meals are nutritionally balanced and really healthy. Whilst some meals are very popular – the meat ball wraps on Thursday disappeared without a trace – it is important to encourage our students to give it a go and try foods they may not usually eat. Good learning, focused attention, better classroom behavior – are all impacts which we strive to achieve through the lunch programme, so please support us and encourage your students to take part in it.
This afternoon twenty eight year 11 and 12 students headed off for a noho at Te Puetere Marae. They are spending the weekend fishing, planting, clearing tracks and learning about tikanga and protocols on the marae. They are excited by the adventure and the mahi they complete will also help them on their NCEA journey; a great opportunity for personal and academic growth. Thanks to Te Manaakitanga Pryor for organizing the noho and giving our students this opportunity.
Finally, as the summer fades and the temperature drops, please ensure that your student arrives with a fleece or a Trident shell jacket to stay warm. There are no hoodies allowed at school and black rain jackets can only be worn on the way to school and must be taken off at school. A uniform is exactly that – uniform – it creates a sense of identity and pride and represents through colour, emblem and motto the core values of our school. Please support us in making sure that your student is in the correct uniform as they arrive and therefore can focus on learning and engaging with other students rather than having their non uniform clothing managed by staff.
Have a peaceful and happy weekend with whanau.
Nga mihi,
Adrienne Scott-Jones

LEVEL 1 FUTURE SCIENCE
Level 1 Future Science students are working on their first combination assessment - interval and external and it is yuck! They have grown bacteria from their unwashed thumb, then compared this to bacteria from a thumb washed with soap and another washed with sanitiser. We don’t imagine anyone will he touching their faces with unwashed hands again! The good thing is that they can prove the efficacy of soap and even better hand sanitiser!

PE SPORT SCIENCE
Last Friday, 19th March we took 24 Level 2 PE Sport Science students to the Avanti Velodrome in Cambridge. They got to experience riding on the steep curves and also got to do Vo2 max testing at the Waikato University on-site Laboratory and to learn about their future career options within the Sport Science industry. It was an incredible day out and our students were amazing! Many thanks to Mr Camburn and Mr Rickard (parent) who gave up their time to drive the vans.
SCUBA DIVING
On Saturday, 17th March was our lake day, freezing cold temperatures made it extra challenging but our students were outstanding, showing resilience to make it through their 2 dives. The lake was 17 degrees and the wind was up which added to the chill.
Sunday was our ocean dive day. We departed around 6am on our journey to Tauranga to load the gear and tanks into the trailers, then onto the boats. A 2 hour journey took us to the stunning location of Motiti Island where students completed 2 more dives. Highlights were seeing several cray's and feeding the fish . Again, our students were incredible and have now completed approx 60 hours (online and practical) to gain their PADI Open Water Dive certificate. Well done everyone. Special thanks to Mrs Roper and Mrs Esterhuizen for driving the 2nd vans this weekend and Mrs Emery as teacher in charge.
