Dear Family,
I am writing this letter in regards to the recent tragedy in which four young children in northern Indiana were involved. The accident happened Tuesday, October 30, 2018.
Sadly, three of the children lost their lives, and the fourth one is still in the hospital. As we see from this terrible situation, our students can be and are at risk each and every time a school bus loads or unloads. We talk to students here at school, have safety drills, and do everything we can to keep students safe when and around/on the school bus. It is my hope and intent with this letter each of you can take some time and talk to your children about the need for them to always be attentive and aware of their surroundings at the bus stop. Please discuss the following items:
- When waiting for the bus, actively watch all traffic
- Stand at least 10 large steps back away from the road
- When the bus stops, DO NOT walk into the road without a directive from the driver
- Watch for your bus driver to give you some kind of signal when it’s safe to cross
- Most of all BE ALERT!!!!
Our number one goal is to keep everyone safe, and it takes all of us working together to accomplish this goal. Also, any chance you get to remind family and friends to watch for school buses loading/unloading, every bus driver in the U.S. will be thankful.
Finally, I personally ask that you keep the families in northern Indiana in your thoughts during this terribly sad and difficult time.
Respectfully,
Karen Wetherald
