The Wayland Union School Board met on Monday, September 9th, at Dorr Elementary for their Regular Meeting.

Presentations/Reports
Dorr Elementary Building Report
- Robin Seniura began her presentation by introducing staff members who were able to join us for the meeting. She then went on to list some amazing accomplishments from the previous school year, including being recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School. She states that their success is based on staff commitment, student engagement, and community involvement.
Governance Team Good News
- Becky Hohnke shared that she had an opportunity to participate in a 9/11 stair climb at the LMCU ballpark. Jeff Koon shared that he had the opportunity to volunteer at the Wayland Hot Air Balloon Festival on Friday and Saturday.
Student Board Members Report
- Matthew Chubb and Teagan Robinson shared that fall sports are in the full swing with Homecoming approaching fast. LOC club, SADD and ECO club are just starting up for the school year. Student Council is currently focused on Homecoming which includes PowderPuff, two assemblies, and the dance. NHS is preparing to induct new members the first week of October. Debate is excited to have the honor of hosting the first debate of the season this Wednesday. Band will be competing in their first marching band competition of the season on September 21st.
District Logo/Identity Update
- Tim Reeves shared that the district formed a committee last spring to discuss the identity of the District, this committee has been placed on the back burner due to summer break. Tim Reeves would like to emphasis that IF the district chooses to to update the logo, it will not be overnight and will be incorporated as courts, signs, etc. need to be updated. There is currently no definitive plan to pick up the branding conversation again.
Public Comment
Anthony Winters commented on the District Logo conversation as an active community member.
Administration Reports
Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Operations
- Leslie Wagner shared the first revenue vs expenditure for the school year. She also highlighted that we rolled 1.4 million dollars of grant funds into this school year to help pay for the district operations. Our facilities team is working on adding filters to our water fountains as part of a new act. The district is receiving 2 new busses this week which were purchased through Gun Lake Tribe Revenue Sharing Fund. The shuttle bus from the high school to the middle school is also going really well, we are encouraging students to continue using that service. Lastly, our business department is busy finalizing the switch to the new finance software.
Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services
- Tim Reeves shared that fall testing is in full swing. This year, our MTSS program looks different because of the ELA program we are piloting. Mrs. Fulk plans to provide a full presentation on last years M-Step scores during the next BOE work session meeting.
Superintendent
- Tim Reeves shared that he is blown away by how positive our back to school transition has been. He also shared that for the first time, we are allowing our Seniors to paint a parking spot. He said are very creative and worth looking at.

Board Topics
Becky Hohnke welcomed Teagan Robinson to the board and Matthew Chubb back as the student representatives. She also thanked Dorr Elementary for hosting the meeting.
Norman Taylor thanked Dorr for hosting the meeting.
Jeff Koon thanked Dorr for hosting the meeting. His biggest take away from the video was the longevity of the staff.
Dan Cassini thanked Dorr for hosting the meeting, he appreciates all the work they put into showcasing their school.
Pete Zondervan also thanked Dorr for hosting, he thought the presentation was excellent. He would like to look at consistently having increased police and security around our campus.
Janel Hott loved the statistics and how Dorr consistently highlights different parts of their school from year to year. Janel Hott thanks Matthew Chubb and Teagan Robinson for being involved in the board.
Theresa Dobry also reiterated her thanks, she felt the presentation was amazing and she appreciates the education at Dorr being top notch.
Teresa Fulk was absent for the meeting.
The meeting adjourned at 6:51pm.
