Bobcat eNews - 2024-2025 Second Quarter
Dear Parents and Community Members,
As we conclude the second quarter and reflect on the journey so far this school year, I want to express my gratitude for your ongoing support and engagement in our schools. Together, we are shaping a positive and safe environment that helps our students thrive.
As a priority for all, school safety and security remains a focus. We continuously assess and enhance our protocols to ensure a secure learning environment. This includes the successful drills we had in November and December, reviewing building security measures for visitors as well as evening activities, and collaboration with local agencies such as law enforcement and emergency management. We are also committed to fostering a culture of awareness and preparedness, empowering everyone in our school community to play an active role in maintaining safety. Always remember, if you See Something, Say Something, anonymous tip line 1-844-SAF2SAY.
As we continue providing supportive measures for students in need, our dedicated school counselors, social worker, mental health professional, and others who serve on our support teams are here to provide resources, guidance, and care for students who may be navigating challenges. As partners in education, we encourage you to have open conversations at home and reach out if your child needs additional support. Together, we can ensure every student feels valued, supported, and ready to learn.
Winter has arrived which brings the possibility of Virtual Learning Days. Our virtual learning days are designed to keep students engaged and progressing, even when weather keeps us apart. Your support in ensuring students log in, complete assignments, and participate actively makes a significant difference in their ongoing success. Given the numerous breaks that are already predesigned as part of the instructional calendar, such as the upcoming Martin Luther King and Presidents Holiday’s, the opportunity to leverage technology to maintain a connection with school, teachers, counselors, and continuity of learning is beneficial. With the abbreviated schedule on Virtual days, students also have time to experience and play outside in the snow.
I also appreciate your flexibility and understanding that winter weather can be a bit unpredictable. Announcing delays far in advance, such as the night before, is an advantage but isn’t always possible, or pivoting from a delayed start to a virtual day is not ideal for the complexities that may occur at home, these decisions are done with safety in mind and I appreciate the support you have provided in understanding that this is no easy task.
As we look ahead, our team is excited to continue working together to provide a safe, supportive, and enriching educational experience for all our students. Thank you for being an essential part of our school community. I look forward to an exciting second half of the school year!
Looking forward to Spring,
Dr. Jason Bottiglieri

An Exciting Partnership focused on School Safety!
Zeroeyes adds another layer to School Safety!
Zeroeyes delivers a proactive, human-verified visual gun detection and situational awareness solution that integrates into existing digital security cameras to stop mass shootings and gun-related violence.
Zeroeyes uses artificial intelligence to actively detect brandished firearms within view of any camera equipped with the software. With incredibly fast (often 2-3 seconds) gun detection and police notifications, our technology can decrease response time-which can save lives.
Exciting Partnership with Eastern York School District
Northeastern School District and Eastern School District have formed a collaborative partnership to provide students with access to unique programs not typically available within their own districts. Through this partnership, Northeastern students can participate in Eastern's renowned JROTC program, gaining valuable leadership and military-related experiences. In return, Eastern students will have the opportunity to engage in Northeastern's innovative DRIVE program, which focuses on developing practical skills and preparing students for careers in fields such as commercial truck driving and forklift related jobs. This collaboration expands opportunities for both sets of students, fostering growth, skill-building, and future success.
It's School Board Appreciation Month!
It's School Board Appreciation Month! We extend a heartfelt thank you to the dedicated members of our School Board! Our students, staff, and community benefit greatly from your hard work and thoughtful decision making to ensure our schools are safe, inclusive, and provide a high-quality education for all.
Dr. Bottiglieri Takes One for the Team at Intermediate PTO Fundraiser!
Last Friday evening, Spring Forge and Shallow Brook Intermediate families had an unforgettable time! Dr. Bottiglieri's willingness to be taped to the wall for such a fun cause truly highlights his great spirit and commitment to supporting the PTO. The laughter and joy from students and staff made it an event to remember! It was a wonderful way to build community and raise funds for a great cause. Thank you to the PTO for arranging this amazing event, and to Dr. Bottiglieri for being such a good sport!
Spring Forge Market Day
Dr. Bottiglieri and Dr. Sica Visit SFI Market Day!
Sixth graders at Spring Forge had an exciting and educational experience with their annual Market Day! This hands-on project gave them the opportunity to learn about consumerism, entrepreneurship, and money management in a very engaging way. By creating and pricing their own products, they not only practiced valuable business skills but also learned about marketing and advertisement creation through videos and print ads.
The culmination of the project—spending the money they earned on their peers' products—was a fun and interactive way to see the real-world application of buying and selling. This a great way for students to experience the concepts of economics, trade, and entrepreneurship in a memorable way.
Board Recognition for Middle School Student Senate
This school year, the NMS Student Senate has been actively involved in organizing events and giving back to the community. They hosted two dances for all middle school students, volunteered with Life Skills classes, decorated the building for holidays, and assisted with Academic Awards Ceremonies. The Senate also donated $800 to Four Diamonds for childhood cancer research, $300 to Operation Help a Neighbor for holiday gifts, and $400 to the American Red Cross to aid victims of the 2025 California wildfires.
Northeastern Receives Sourcewell Helping Kids Mini-Grant... Thanks to Dr. Sica!
AASA awarded a total of $40,000 in funds to 16 school districts to improve learning in two ways - reimagining and advancing existing district infrastructure and making upgrades for flexible and contemporary educational facilities. Thanks to the grant writing expertise of Dr. Sica, Northeastern was awarded $2,500 to fund one-way security film at York Haven elementary for the lobby area. This will create a more secure environment for our students and staff. The district will be working to add this security feature to buildings that need this added piece as part of our safety enhancements.

High School
In December, Mia Frantz and Cao Vinh Nguyen were both honored as Students of the Month by the Rotary Club of York, a well-deserved recognition for their hard work and dedication. This accomplishment highlights their outstanding academic achievements, leadership, and positive contributions to the school community. Congratulations to Mia and Vinh on this remarkable achievement!
Students from Northeastern High School’s journalism program attended the Journalism Education Association’s Fall Convention from November 6 to 9 in Philadelphia, where they had the opportunity to participate in a full-day broadcast journalism workshop, attend various conference sessions, and submit entries for the National Scholastic Media Competition. The convention drew over 3,000 students from 681 schools across all 50 states and eight countries.
All three teams from Northeastern High School earned national recognition in the competition. Cassandra Kann and Nora Reiner received the highest possible ranking of Superior for their broadcast news story on school safety. Ella Gladfelter and Saqqarah Hightower earned the second-highest ranking of Excellent for their broadcast feature story about a Northeastern student’s journey immigrating to the United States. Nicholas Powl and Jacob Zambito were awarded an honorable mention for their broadcast sports story covering the launch of the girls wrestling team.
These achievements highlight the talent and dedication of Northeastern High School's journalism program, as its students showcased their skills and passion for journalism on a national stage.
Congratulations, Hannah! Out of 40 talented contestants, Hannah Weaver, 11th grader, was selected to perform the National Anthem at this year's PA Farm Show. Her powerful rendition captivated the audience and set a moving tone for the event. Click here to watch her performance!
Middle School
The Student Senate would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the staff and parent chaperones who contributed to making the event a success. A special thanks goes to Mrs. Walker for her generous donation of delicious goodies for the concession stand and for volunteering her time to ensure everything ran smoothly. We would also like to express our gratitude to Mrs. Lantz and her National Junior Honor Society (NAJHS) members for their creativity and hard work in designing and putting up the decorations. Their efforts truly helped enhance the atmosphere and make the event memorable for everyone involved. Thanks to the generous support of all involved, the NMS Student Senate raised $400 from the proceeds of the dance, which will be donated to the American Red Cross to help those affected by the 2025 California wildfires. The night was full of fun and helping out a worthy cause!
Shallow Brook
Fourth graders at Shallow Brook participated in a "Medieval Day" to accompany their learning in their CKLA Middle Ages unit. Students created stained glass windows, participated in medieval games, dressed in medieval clothing for a photo booth opportunity, and explored how catapults work with a LEGO STEM challenge.
The staff at SBI truly rocked it this marking period, going above and beyond to support students and families. Special recognition was given to Steph Myers, our dedicated Guidance Counselor, and Jodie Slonaker, our hard-working Guidance Secretary, for their tireless efforts and commitment to the well-being of everyone in the school community. In the spirit of the season, the staff came together to spread holiday cheer by dressing up and playing festive Christmas songs from the roof, greeting all of our SBI students with joyful music and holiday spirit. It was a heartwarming and memorable way to celebrate the season and show appreciation for the hard work that makes our school such a special place.
Spring Forge
Many of our staff members received training on LEGO Edu earlier in the year and eagerly put that training into place to engage our students in STEM lessons. Students shown here were tasked with designing, building, and programing a wheeless vehicle that could cross the finish line faster than the competition. This good natured battle required students to work as teams to design, trial, and adjust many times before they finalized their project. Fun and learning certainly comes together as our staff engages students in these wonderful learning opportunities.
Our beloved Mr. Hedrick, head custodian, retired this quarter. Mr. Hedrick has been our head custodian since 2000, when SFI was constructed. Under his watch SFI has been a clean and safe place for our students to learn. Although we miss Mr. Hedrick, we are excited for him to enjoy this well earned chapter in life.
Conewago
Mrs. Oliver, Mrs. Davis (1st grade), Mrs. Wolff (2nd grade), and Mrs. Rodgers (3rd grade) held a combined LEGO STEM activity. Students were tasked with creating a car by following directions in their books. Once completed, they created their own challenges and tested them out.
Mount Wolf
There is a new way for students to choose a book as a TRACKS prize at MW. The new book vending machine is stocked and dispensing books to all of the students who choose a book when they cash in their TRACKS cards. When they choose a book, they receive a special coin from the office that gets them the book of their choice. MW loves to read!
Mount Wolf Elementary classrooms are having fun celebrating the end of each ELA unit with a culminating activity. The classes participate in activities related to the topic of the unit. In these units, they are learning about topics related to ancient civilizations, light and sound, and the human body. The students love participating in these activities, and so do the teachers!
Orendorf
As shopping mall-style photos with Santa continue to have astronomical costs, the Orendorf PTO continued to offer its annual Cookies with Santa event. This event provides families the opportunity to receive a high-quality picture with Santa and their family at no charge. The pictures are printed on-site, and students love it. This year, the PTO also provided a "sensory-friendly" time to allow families with children who have sensory difficulties to enjoy a quiet, private photo opportunity. Kudos to the PTO for offering free services that many families might not be able to access otherwise. We appreciate this culture of understanding and inclusivity.
York Haven
York Haven Elementary will be launching a One School, One Book program. This initiative brings the entire school community together to share the joy of reading the same book at the same time. Through this program, York Haven aims to foster a love of reading, strengthen their sense of community, and create opportunities for meaningful conversations and activities centered around the chosen book.
Staff support their growth in school safety!
Mrs. Clements, Mrs. Overmiller, and Mrs. Baumgardner recently attended the Pennsylvania School Safety Institute. They were provided hands-on experiences and classroom training designed to address security threats that may happen in a school building. They learned de-escalation strategies by using a multi-room simulator and augmented reality.

Girls Basketball Players Honor Local Veterans This Holiday Season
In December a group of dedicated middle school and high school girls basketball players, along with some parents and members of the booster club, came together to honor veterans and support the Wreaths Across America campaign at Fort Indiantown Gap.
The event is part of a nationwide initiative to place wreaths on the graves of fallen soldiers during the holiday season. It's a tradition that not only honors the sacrifices made by our veterans but also encourages community involvement and service. Our basketball players were proud to join this incredible cause and make a difference in the lives of local veterans.
Middle School Cheerleading Team Takes 1st Place!
We are excited to announce that our middle school cheerleading competition team, made up of 7th, 8th, and 9th grade girls, competed this weekend and earned 1st place in their division! This is an incredible achievement, especially following their 2nd place finish just two weeks ago.
Congratulations to the entire team for their dedication, teamwork, and hard work! We couldn’t be prouder of all of you. Keep up the great work, girls – the sky’s the limit!
New Football Coach Meets With Students
We are happy to introduce Ryan Bologa as our new Head Varsity Football Coach. We look forward to an exciting future under his leadership!

Free School Breakfast
As a reminder all students are able to receive a free breakfast thanks to the Free Breakfast initiative from Governor Shapiro’s office. To comply with the guidelines, students who pick up a breakfast meal in the morning are asked to take a fruit and/or juice. If a student does not want to consume one of the required breakfast meal items, we encourage them to place it in the community collection basket set out at the registers. The extras will be set aside for other Bobcats to pick up if they would like something extra. We love when Bobcats support Bobcats!
DID YOU KNOW?
USDA has a dual mission of providing healthy food to children and supporting American farmers. All USDA Foods products are grown, processed, and packaged in the United States or its territories.
USDA Department of Defense (DoD) Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program
The USDA DoD Fresh program offers child nutrition programs the option to order a greater variety of fresh fruits and vegetables using their USDA Foods entitlement. Requested produce items are delivered by a DoD contractor. This program helps connect child nutrition programs with high-quality, domestic, fresh fruits and vegetables and helps maximize the use of USDA Foods entitlement to support healthy menus.
Northeastern School District currently participates in the USDA DoD program using $50,000 of its commodity entitlement dollars for the 2024-2025 School Year across four of the eight school buildings.
Former NESD Graduate Serves as Honor Guard for the Late President Carter.
Adolfo Salinas, a 2016 graduate of NESD, had the distinguished honor of participating in the funeral service for the late President Jimmy Carter. Salinas served as one of the honor guards who stood vigil over President Carter's remains in the Capitol Rotunda, where they laid in state for two days. His role in this solemn ceremony was a significant and poignant moment in his life, as he paid tribute to a respected leader while representing his country with dignity and respect. It was an experience that highlighted his commitment to service and the values of duty and honor. He also served as a sentinel at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in 2021 and will be serving in the White House during the upcoming Inauguration Day. Adolfo is seen standing at the far right upper corner of the picture below.
OHAN - Another Successful Year of Helping
Operation Help A Neighbor served 341 Northeastern families this holiday season. Thank you to our generous community for the donations of gifts, food, and clothing!
The Northeastern Foundation is a non-profit organization that partners with the Northeastern School District to fulfill student need.
The goal of the foundation is to provide scholarships and to raise dollars to support academic, cultural, and athletic necessities that cannot be funded by the district's operating budget. The Northeastern Foundation is dedicated to offering students opportunities that would not otherwise be possible.
