Dolphin Tales
A Newsletter for Dove Elementary Families
August 28-September 1, 2023
A Note from the principal...
Hello, Dove families!
We had a great Week #2 at Dove Elementary! Teaching and learning are in full swing in our classrooms, and our teachers continue to reinforce behavior expectations throughout the building! Has your student talked about Dolphin Dollars? Dolphin Dollars are the currency we use at Dove to positively reinforce behaviors! Our students are having so much fun earning Dolphin Dollars and they can't wait to cash them in for prizes!
It was so fun to close out our first full week with an All School Assembly! There's something about having our entire school all in the same place hearing the same message and celebrating together that just makes me smile! This assembly was SUPER for a lot of reasons, but one of those reasons was our very special guest! Spiderman stopped by Dove to talk to students about how they can become Superheroes! He told them to Be Kind. Be Helpful. And to Always Do Your Best.
I don't know about you, but I think that's great advice!
Proud to be your principal,
Heather Landrum

Volunteer Background Check - ACTION NEEDED
All visitors who wish to visit at Dove or be a part of events such as field trips, Friendship Day, class parties, Field Day, Book Fair shopping, the Fun Run, and more need to have a cleared background check every year.
We encourage ALL VISITORS to do this at the beginning of each school year to avoid any conflicts with attending events at our school!
More information about the process and the online application can be found HERE. Safety is everyone's responsibility, and we appreciate everyone taking time at the beginning of each year to complete the background check process!

Attendance Matters! Thank you for having your child at school on time ON TIME AND READY TO LEARN!!!!!!!!Attendance Matters!
- Students enrolled in prekindergarten or kindergarten are required to attend school and are subject to the compulsory attendance requirements as long as they remain enrolled at a campus.
- Students/families who do not meet compulsory attendance will be referred to the GCISD Attendance Review Board and/or referred to Tarrant County Court for truancy.
- To receive credit or a final grade in a class, a student in kindergarten–grade 12 must attend at least 90 percent of the days the class is offered.
- Up to 8 days per year (4 per semester) may be excused by a parent note for missed attendance beyond medical, approved excused, and statutorily exemptions.
- Vacations taken during the school year will be coded as unexcused absences.
- A parent must provide an explanation for any absence upon the student’s arrival or return to school. The student must submit a note signed by the parent. The campus will document in its attendance records whether the absence is excused or unexcused.
- All absences whether excused or unexcused count toward the 90% rule.

Can I eat lunch with my child?
We welcome visitors during lunch!
Due to seating capacity, we only have space for a certain number of visitors during each grade level lunch. Please click on the Sign Up Genius below and scroll down to find your child's grade level and sign up on an open spot to ensure that you have a spot to sit at lunch! Once the slots on a particular grade level are filled, we won't have the space for additional visitors on that day during that grade level lunch.

Repeated Information...But Worth Reading Again
Welcome, Officer Day
GCISD is proud to announce a partnership with the City of Grapevine and City of Colleyville, along with the Grapevine and Colleyville Police Departments, to employ a full-time School Resource Officer at all GCISD campuses.
https://www.gcisd.net/article/1194038
Officer Day will be the School Resource Officer at Dove! Officer Day spent the first week of school meeting students and visiting classrooms and lunch!
Emergency Management
Below is information regarding Standard Response Protocols. GCISD partners with the I Love U Guys Foundation and uses the Standard Response Protocols (SRP) to respond to any situation or emergency that takes place at school or in the district. Click here to see the Parent and Guardian Standard Response Protocol Information Sheet.
Each campus will conduct drills throughout the school year. These drills are based on the Standard Response Protocols of Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, Shelter, and Hold. GCISD developed one additional protocol known as Clear.
Completion of the drills is mandatory for each campus during the first two weeks of school, so that students and staff are prepared. Drills help us learn and know how to respond in the case of a real emergency at school. Our drills also help us to check certain equipment and responses. Our emergency management leaders on each campus will work with students and staff to complete our drills and document the results.
Emergency personnel in Colleyville, Euless and Grapevine work in partnership with GCISD to ensure we keep all students and staff safe.
Your child's classroom has a SRP Poster displayed. We will be discussing these and practicing these drills the next two weeks of school. More information about Safety and Security in GCISD can be found at https://www.gcisd.net/page/safety-and-security If you have any questions, GCISD Director of Emergency Management and School Security, Allen Smith, is very receptive to speaking with parents about our safety practices and may be reached at allen.smith@gcisd.net.
Going Outside During HOT Weather
- Students should be hydrated prior to outdoor activities and drinking water shall be easily accessible.
- Students shall not have recess or physical education classes outside when temperature or heat index exceeds 100 degrees. The campus administrator or designee will notify or announce an activity advisory to all applicable staff.
- Teachers are advised to use caution on other days when the temperature or heat index is high. Limiting recess to no more than 15 minutes and ensuring that students have access to adequate water prior to and/or after outside play is essential.

Texas House Bill 114
Effective 9/1/2023, Texas House Bill 114 requires a student to be placed in the DAEP if the student possesses, uses, or is under the influence of, or sells, gives, or delivers marijuana, THC, or an e-cigarette to another person within 300 feet of school property or at a school-related event. The District encourages all families to talk with their students regarding the dangers associated with vaping or drug usage and to discuss the implications of this new law with your children, emphasizing the importance of adhering to school policies and laws for their own welfare and for the betterment of the school community as a whole.
