AMS Weekly Update
Monday, November 18-Friday, November 22, 2024
Dear Adams Families,
In recent weeks, you may have received notifications about incidents that required us to contact the Westland Police Department. We want to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the importance of creating a safe environment for our students and staff. It’s crucial that we all work together to reinforce the values of respect, kindness, and responsibility, both in and out of the classroom.
Please have a conversation with your child about the significance of using appropriate language and maintaining a respectful attitude toward one another. Threatening behavior of any kind, whether spoken or written, will not be tolerated, and we are committed to responding promptly and appropriately to ensure the safety of everyone at our school.
We understand that these conversations may be challenging, but they are essential for helping our students grow into responsible, caring individuals. We are proud of the positive community we are building here at Adams, and with your continued support, we can create a safe, welcoming environment for all students.
Thank you for your partnership in ensuring the safety and well-being of our students. Together, we are making a difference!
Best,
Mrs. Bukosky and Mrs. Abbott
Talking Points for Parents
1. The Importance of Safety:
- Emphasize that everyone's safety, students, teachers, and staff is the most important thing at school.
- Discuss how safe behavior helps everyone feel comfortable, secure, and ready to learn.
2. Understanding What Is a Threat:
- Explain that threats, whether verbal, written, or through actions, are taken seriously.
- Reinforce that even if a threat is said as a joke, it can cause harm or fear and is never acceptable.
3. Using Kind and Respectful Language:
- Encourage the use of respectful words at all times, whether talking to friends, teachers, or others.
- Remind them that positive language builds stronger friendships and a more supportive school environment.
4. Reporting Concerns:
- Teach your child that if they hear something concerning or feel unsafe, they should tell a trusted adult right away.
- Discuss the role of school staff and how they are always available to listen and help when needed.
5. Understanding the Consequences:
- Help your child understand that there are serious consequences for making threats or engaging in unsafe behavior, even if they didn’t mean it.
- Reinforce that the goal of these consequences is to protect everyone and keep the school a safe place.
6. Being a Positive Influence:
- Encourage your child to be a role model for others by speaking up when they see something wrong and by treating everyone with kindness and respect.
- Highlight that they can make a difference in creating a positive school environment by showing empathy and supporting their peers.
7. Staying Calm in Difficult Situations:
- Talk about how to remain calm and use problem-solving skills if conflicts arise. Emphasize the importance of walking away and seeking help from an adult instead of escalating the situation.
8. Our Shared Responsibility:
- Remind your child that school safety is a team effort, and everyone, students, staff, and families has a role in making sure the environment is safe and supportive.

Attendance
If your child’s bus is canceled, please make sure to inform the school by calling the attendance line or speaking with a secretary. Let them know that the absence is due to a bus cancellation. The secretary will mark your child’s attendance with a “B” for bus cancellation, which will not count against them for truancy purposes.
If your child is sick and visits a doctor, please make sure to send in the doctor’s note or contact us with that information. This will allow us to mark the absence as documented, which is important for accurate attendance records.
Please note that simply calling to excuse your child without a doctor’s note will count as an excused absence, not a documented one. Documented absences are essential in certain cases to avoid any potential attendance issues.
Thank you for helping us keep our records accurate and supporting your child’s attendance!

Special Education
The holiday season is upon us and we are excited to do many fun activities with your children. This is a time to be joyous and kind. In this edition of our newsletter, we're excited to share some more special education classrooms and our wonderful staff.
I’d like to Introduce Mrs. Roe, Mrs. Kelly and Mrs. Robertson, our ASD para-professionals. These ladies do a fantastic job of supporting our Autism Spectrum Students with their needs within the classroom.
My name is Robin Roe and I have been married for 30 years. I have one son Cody. I have 2 cats Nikki and Reiley and 1 dog Jazzie. I started here in the district over 15 years ago as a volunteer in the classroom. I also worked as a Bus supervisor, Lunchroom supervisor and overload aid. I became a Paraprofessional over 12 years ago. In my spare time I love to read and hangout in my backyard that I call my sanctuary, weather permitting of course.
Melissa Kelly: I live in Westland with my husband and fur baby (King). My two sons and five grandchildren live in Alabama. After graduating from Detroit Public School, I served in the United States Army. As a Veteran I earned my Associate Degree from Henry Ford College in Childrens & Families. This is my 5th year working in the District. After many years working in Early Childhood Education, I am truly Blessed to be here at Adams.
Sue Robertson, Adams Middle School ASD Act 18 Classroom Paraprofessional. I feel extremely lucky to have a job that I love, which allows me to smile, laugh and watch young children grow and flourish every day. Education is my passion. I have over 20+ years of experience in education and childcare. I have worked 12 years in the Wayne-Westland School District from 1997-2008, and 2011-2012. After receiving an Early Childhood Education degree from Schoolcraft, I spent 10 years with infant/preschool age children in a daycare setting transitioning onto a Montessori Teaching position. Upon retiring, I returned to WWCSD once again as a special education paraprofessional. I have been happily married for 37 years. We have 2 fun-loving adult children (Emily and Eric) and an English Bulldog named Hamilton. Traveling, reading, cooking, and watching HGTV are a few of my favorite things.
Social Studies
We are thrilled to share that our students recently took part in a Mock Election. Students cast their ballots just like real voters! This Mock Election was not only a fun and engaging experience, but it also helped students better understand the importance of voting and the election process.
6th grade students are studying the 5-Themes of Geography. These five themes are a framework that helps us understand the world and how everything is interconnected. These themes—location, place, human-environment interaction, movement, and region—are key concepts for understanding geography. Geography is all about exploring the relationships between people, places, and the environment.
7th grade students are studying Ancient Mesopotamia. Students have learned about the fascinating history, culture, and contributions of Mesopotamia. This includes exploring innovations in writing, law, architecture, and agriculture. Students have deepened their understanding of modern civilization and recognized how ancient innovations still impact our world today.
8th grade students are beginning to learn about Washington’s Presidency. His presidency is foundational in shaping the U.S. government, its institutions, and its foreign policies. Washington’s leadership played a central role in the country’s growth. His actions and policies created the framework for the presidency and the broader American political system.
Stem Science Kits
On Friday, the 6th graders worked with Microbits. They coded and created a die and an eight ball. With this knowledge, next week the students are going to work with legos and create prototypes to find the most effective way to move a robot without using wheels.
