Attendance
At EBCA, we strive to promote perfect attendance. It is important for students to attend school on time, daily. Every Friday, the classes with the highest attendance rates are awarded a trophy to display in their classes. Additionally, prizes are raffled to students who have maintained perfect attendance throughout the week.
Chronic Absenteeism & Truancy
What is chronic absenteeism?
Chronic absenteeism means missing too much school—for any reason—excused or unexcused.
How does California define chronic absenteeism?
A "chronic absentee" has been defined in Education Code Section 60901(c)(1) as "a pupil who is absent on 10 percent or more of the schooldays in the school year when the total number of days a pupil is absent is divided by the total number of days the pupil is enrolled and school was actually taught in the regular day. We attend 180 days in a school year. So 10% of 180 equals 18 days which is the most a student can have of excused or unexcused absences in a school year.
What makes a student 'truant'?
While chronic absenteeism measures total absences, including excused and unexcused, truancy measures only unexcused absences. The number of unexcused absences it takes for a student to be considered a "truant" differs by state. Read your school district policies and state codes on attendance. You need to stay well-informed on how many absences are allowed, and what count as excused and unexcused absences.
Take any warning you receive seriously. Why? The consequences of too many absences are serious not only for students, but also for parents! Schools handle minor truancy with warning letters, parent-teacher conferences and other means.

Additional Resources
CalKids: Free College Savings Account (based on eligibility)
Brought to you by the State of California, CalKIDS offers eligible families access to higher education with up to $1,500 in free money for college! Visit CalKIDS.org to learn more about the program and check your eligibility or read below.
Figuring out how to pay for college can be tough, especially for families with limited resources. Fortunately, the State of California has launched a program that could make college a reality for millions of children in our state. Starting July 1, 2022, community-based organizations throughout the state will work to educate parents about the California Kids Investment and Development Savings Program (CalKIDS).
CalKIDS, a new program administered by the ScholarShare Investment Board, an agency of the State of California and chaired by the State Treasurer, will automatically provide eligible, low-income public school children in grades 1-12 in California with the tools to start saving for college, including an initial seed deposit and possible financial incentives in a college savings account. The State of California created the program to expand access to higher education and encourage families to jumpstart saving for college and other forms of career training, regardless of household income.
Kids in grades 1-12 may receive up to $1,500 in college savings
The State of California will offer eligible low-income public school students the following awards in a CalKIDS account to save for higher education, as applicable:*
- $500 automatic deposit for eligible low-income public school students enrolled in first through 12th grade
- $500 additional deposit for eligible students identified as foster youth
- $500 additional deposit for eligible students experiencing homelessness
Over time, funds in a CalKIDS account can grow tax-free and be used for future higher education expenses, such as tuition, books, computers, and room and board. When the student is ready to use their savings to pay for any qualified higher education expense, they can easily redeem their funds, including any earnings, from their CalKIDS account.
Classroom Celebrations Policy
Food or Balloons of any kind may not be dropped off at school for class birthday celebrations. The main reasons for this are healthy nutrition and we have several students with a variety of food and latex allergies that we must monitor.
We will limit classroom celebrations to that last 30 minutes of the day for the following days:
- October 31 - Halloween (when it falls during the week Monday-Friday)
- November - Thanksgiving Break (last day before Thanksgiving break)
- December - Winter Break (last day before winter break)
- February 14 - Valentine’s Day (when it falls during the week Monday-Friday)
- June - last day of school
Keep in mind these are the only days allowed but grade levels will have the discretion to not participate if they feel it is a disruption to the learning process.
