College & Career Kick Off
College & Career Kick Off focuses on college and career readiness and is connected to the Riverside County Office of Education pledge that all students in Riverside County will graduate from high school well prepared for college and the workforce.
Each grade level will participate in a different activity. Please see below for a breakdown of our day.
CKO for Freshmen: PSAT8/9
- Confidence Building: Taking the PSAT 8/9 is a great practice tool for sophomore year, when they take the PSAT 10. It will help them understand expectations.
- Course Selection: PSAT 8/9 scores will show which courses each student would excel in - making it a great tool to use when selecting courses for sophomore year. This also helps students to know if they are ready for the challenge of an AP course.
- Career Exploration: Students can connect their test results to Career Finder, a tool that helps discover careers based on your interests.

CKO for Sophomores: PSAT10/NMSQT
The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) not only measure what students are learning in school, but also provides students with insight on their academic strengths. This information is very useful as we get into course selection for Junior year.
Students can also use resources on the College Board website and Khan Academy to prepare themselves for the test.

CKO for Juniors: The ASVAB or PSAT/NMSQT
All Juniors will take the ASVAB. Students who choose to take the PSAT/NMSQT can purchase the test for $20 through the CHS Webstore. In the search bar, type in PSAT to access the purchase option. Click here to purchase.
The ASVAB
The Department of Defense sponsors the ASVAB CEP and provides a career exploration service to American youth. Participants have no obligation to talk to a military recruiter or enter military service, but students in 11th grade and beyond can use their scores to explore enlistment if they choose.
The ASVAB CEP promotes career literacy through exposure to career-field entry requirements and future-oriented planning tools to help students develop an action plan to share with parents and educators. The ASVAB CEP is not all about the Military; it’s about options. The ASVAB CEP offers an equally unique opportunity to those interested in pursuing post secondary education, work-based learning and the Military because the ASVAB assesses academic ability and predicts success in a variety of careers in addition to military occupations.
