Tēnā koutou katoa
Ngā mihi nui, kia koutou katoa - Warm greetings to you all.
We hope everyone had a fabulous holiday break. Our TPS team are well prepared and excited for the term ahead. This term all teams will teach the Understanding Me health unit (information below) and every class will also attend sessions in the Life Education van to learn about body systems and how they work. Each team has sent out a Term 3 notice which contains more detailed information for parents about the term ahead .
Next week, the Education Review Office (ERO) will be onsite to complete their review of our school. This will involve a reviewer in classes observing teaching practice.
Towards the end of this term, parents will receive a school report and will be invited to a Learning Conference. This will be the third opportunity for parents to formally connect with their child's teacher(s) to review how the year is going and set goals for the remainder of the year. In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns, please make direct contact with your child's teacher.
------------------------------------------------
This term we welcome several new TPS staff to our team:
- Fiona Cornwell and Catherine Day who are team teaching in Room 11
- Sue Belsham who is teaching in Middle Hub 4
- Tyla Grafas who joins our Teacher Aide team
I am also thrilled to share that Whaea Jen and her husband welcomed a wee baby boy, Nico James, into their family in the holidays. Everyone is doing great and we all think he is just so gorgeous and perfect.
------------------------------------------------
The Tauranga Primary School Board of Trustees would like to co-opt a member who is mana whenua and has a strong interest in supporting our school in the future. Active participation by whānau Māori in planning, development and delivery of education services will help us to ensure that what we do at TPS is appropriate and effective for ākonga Māori. If you have any interest in finding out more about this role please contact me.
----------------------------------------
A very warm welcome to students who have recently started at TPS: Antonella Garate Pacheco, Yanjiao Wang, Seojun and Seowoo Mun, Emily Ma, Andy Zhang, Ruby Kwok, Liam Morss, Millie Gaylard, Aubrey Moore, Hunter Dutch, Selena Lor, Ella Bellamy, Eleanor Alach, Thanwin Sreejith, Ataria Puhara, Heeni Puhara, Taimana Puhara-Simeon, Aria Barham and Arthur Doabroski de Souza.

Understanding Me - Term 3 Health Unit
Below is a link to a parent information video. The video outlines the UNDERSTANDING ME health unit we are teaching in Term 3.
Understanding Me is a health unit we teach every second year; it incorporates health lessons from the PE and Health curriculum including Relationships and Sexuality Education and the NZ Police unit Keeping Ourselves Safe.
This video provides an overview of what is covered in each area of the school.
I recommend that all parents watch the video so that they are well-informed.
Please do not hesitate to talk to your child's teacher if you have any questions or queries.

Peer Mediators @ TPS
At TPS we have various initiatives in place to create and maintain a Peaceful Playground. Our goal is to ensure that our students are engaged in fun activities and that everyone is safe and happy. One strategy we employ is a peer mediator programme. The peer mediators (year 6 students) work in our junior school playground at lunchtimes to support children navigating everyday playground challenges. These students have been trained, and are supervised, to help children resolve playground disagreements.
They can help with problem solving (for example how to positively share play equipment), they check in with students who might look lonely or sad and they help children find someone to play with. Through supporting their younger peers in a tuakana-teina relationship, they are developing their own skills to listen, be empathetic, and to moderate and find compromise.
If an issue is particularly challenging, they bring in a duty teacher to help resolve it.
