OSHA 10
OSHA 10 is a 10-hour safety training program developed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to promote workplace safety and health. It provides workers, including high school students, with fundamental knowledge about recognizing and mitigating workplace hazards.
What is OSHA 10?
OSHA 10 is divided into two primary courses:
- OSHA 10-Hour General Industry: Focuses on industries like healthcare, manufacturing, warehousing, and more.
- OSHA 10-Hour Construction: Tailored for those entering the construction field, covering job-site hazards, personal protective equipment (PPE), and fall prevention.
The course is typically taught by OSHA-authorized trainers and includes topics such as:
- Introduction to OSHA and worker rights
- Hazard recognition and prevention
- Workplace safety culture
- Specific hazards like electrical, fall, and chemical risks
OSHA 10 in Career and Technical Education (CTE)
For high school students participating in work-based learning (WBL) experiences such as internships, apprenticeships, or hands-on classroom education:
- Safety Preparation: OSHA 10 ensures students are aware of their rights and responsibilities and equips them to navigate potentially hazardous work environments.
- Industry Standards: It aligns with the safety requirements of partnering employers, creating a seamless transition from school to work.
- Compliance and Confidence: Students are prepared to adhere to safety regulations, reducing liability for employers who are willing to partner with Lyon CSD and employ Lyon CSD students in hands-on training, apprenticeships, etc.
OSHA 10 certification prepares students for industry careers in fields like construction, welding, electrical work, and healthcare, while enhancing their school-to-work transition by giving them a competitive advantage in the job market and promoting a proactive safety culture that reduces workplace injuries and accidents.
