Social Emotional Learning and Character Education
MAY 2025 EDITION
Dear Sewanee Elementary Students and Families,
As we approach the end of another wonderful school year, I want to take a moment to thank you for your continued support and partnership. It has been a joy working with your children, helping them grow socially, emotionally, and academically through our lessons and individual supports.
In our final lessons of the year, all students will participate in an "End -of-Year" lesson, which will help them reflect on their growth and achievements. We will focus on important skills like:
- Celebrating successes and identifing at least one reason he/she felt proud of him/herself this year (Kindergarten - 5th students)
- Identifying one goal for next year (Kindergarten - 5th students)
- Identifying a challenge or struggle that he/she overcame this year (2nd - 5th students)
- Identifying one area of confidence developed this year (2nd - 5th students)
- Managing transitions and preparing for the next grade level (3rd - 5th students)
- Writing an encouraging message for their peers as they leave the year (3rd - 5th students)
In addition to our end-of-year theme, kindergarten and first grade students will participate in a special lesson on "Telling vs. Tattling." Through stories, discussions, and role-playing activities, students will learn:
- The difference between telling (reporting something important to keep someone safe) and tattling (trying to get someone in trouble for small issues)
- How to decide when to seek adult help
- Ways to solve small problems independently using "big kid" strategies
This lesson empowers our youngest students to make safe, responsible decisions and to advocate for themselves and others appropriately.
While summer break is near, the lessons and skills your children have learned this year will continue to grow with them. I encourage you to reinforce these messages at home by:
-
Celebrating perseverance and effort
-
Practicing problem-solving skills together
-
Having open conversations about handling peer conflicts respectfully
Last month, we focused on career exploration. Students participated in a lesson and activities to help them discover their interests and talents, explore careers, and understand how they connect to their futures.
Thank you again for entrusting me to be a part of your child's journey. I wish you all a safe, joyful, and relaxing summer! 🌞
Warmly,
Kim Hasty, M.S.
