Westbrook Park News & Notes
November 2024
A note from Mrs. Bush!
November brings another month of excitement at Westbrook Park! On Veteran’s Day, Westbrook Park honored our Veterans through grade level and classroom activities including making cards for veterans, as well as lessons on the American Flag. We are looking forward to the book fair which will be introduced in library classes on the 21st. Thank you to Ms. Farrell for coordinating this experience!
Later in the month, families will have the opportunity to meet with their child’s teacher during Conferences. This is a beneficial time to connect with your child’s teacher, hear all of the exciting things happening each day in your child’s classroom, and to discuss your child’s progress. If you have any questions, please bring them to your child’s conference. Please also reach out to your child’s teacher if you need to schedule a conference. Conferences will be held on 11/25 in the afternoon and evening, 11/26 in the afternoon, and on 11/27 for remaining kindergarten conferences. Students grades 1 through 5 will be dismissed at 12:30 on all of these days. There will be no school for kindergarten the week of the 25th.
As we approach our Thanksgiving Holiday, we are grateful for the support we receive each day at Westbrook Park from all of our families. School will be closed for the Thanksgiving Holiday for all on 11/28 and 11/29. We hope you enjoy the time with your family. Have a great few days off and find ways to continue reading!
A Note from Ms. Ashworth
We also had a school wide spirit week for Red Ribbon Week. Red Ribbon week it to help promote healthy and safe lifestyles by staying drug free. This years theme was: life is a movie, film drug free. We had a lot of fun being able to dress up or down and dream of healthy lifestyle! During Ms. Ashworth's counseling lessons she read the story, The Couch Potato by Jory John and Pete Oswald. Each student was able to identify safe and healthy choice as well.
Students are working hard to earn the Golden Spatula at lunch by following the golden spatula expectations. Also, students are working hard on being at school to win the most days attended on our attendance calendars. In October, one of our classes had every student present at school 22 days!! That is impressive!
Schoolwide we are working on our attendance and being at school everyday! Of course, if students are sick or have a family emergency or event, we understand, but please make sure you are letting school know, by sending in a note or email to:

Occupational Therapy
During Halloween week we had fine motor stations, a student favorite. We hammered golf tees into a pumpkin, picked spiders out of a web, picked up eyeballs with skeleton hands, a sensory bin filled with bugs, peeled a tape spider web off the table. Kids had a lot of fun and their fine motor was challenged in many ways. Always a loved week in OT.
Reading MTSS
During MTSS reading, students are working with their magnet tile boards to build and read multisyllabic words with suffixes.
G.L.A.M Notes
Gym
This month in PE, we've been focusing on practicing key basketball skills like dribbling, shooting, and passing to strengthen our game. We’ve worked on individual techniques in an open gym setting, helping everyone improve their coordination and teamwork. It’s been exciting to see progress as we challenge ourselves and support each other. Remember, wearing the right sneakers in the gym is important to prevent injuries and give you the support you need during all activities!
Library
We’re excited to invite you to our upcoming Scholastic Book Fair. This event is an opportunity for students of all ages to build their home libraries and further their love of reading. As always, all purchases benefit our school library.
*Online Fair

The Book Fair runs from Thursday, November 21st- Tuesday, November 26th during your child's library class. The Bookfair will also be open during afternoon and evening conferences for parents to shop.
We’re excited to see you and celebrate our love of books together at the Book Fair!
Art
In art class we are currently working on the following art projects. In First Grade we are
continuing our work on our large portrait drawings. In Second Grade we are continuing our work
on our creature paintings that are based on the book,” Where the Wild Things Are”, written by
Maurice Sendak. In Third Grade we are continuing our work on our carousel horse drawings that
we will eventually paint. In Fourth Grade we are continuing our work on our symmetrical fall
tree pictures. In Fifth Grade we are continuing our work on our reflective landscapes.
Music
As we approach the winter concert coming up, the students in chorus are doing a fantastic job in shaping their sound and showing their energy through the music. They are also starting to become quite comfortable with beginning to memorize their music. Here is a reminder that the winter concert will be taking place here at Westbrook Park on Wednesday, December 11th at 7PM in the gym! As for music class, the students have been doing an excellent job at improving on their instrument playing skills. First grade has gotten introduced to playing instruments to the steady beat, and they are so excited to learn more. Fifth grade has been getting into creating, including with body percussion. Later this month, they will be creating their own rhythms with instruments to play along to many different songs.
