Niton Central News
January 29 - February 2
Principal's Message
This Tuesday from 6:30 - 8:30 is our Community Engagement. I hope to see everyone there to support our school and specifically discuss our grade 9 programming. Regardless of what grade your child is in, there are implications for all students at Niton Central. I encourage all parents, guardians, and community members to attend. This is your opportunity to share your perspective regarding the future of our grade 9 students at Niton.
The Alberta Assurance Surveys is officially open for parents to complete. You will have been mailed information for you to complete the survey if your child is in grade 4 and up. The results help the school understand what we are doing well and where we could focus our attention. Please note that while completing the survey, selecting "I don't know" shows up on our end as dissatisfied which may lead us to focus on the wrong thing. If you are unsure about a question or topic, I encourage you to reach out to the school. On Friday, February 2 during our Special Person Lunch we will have Chromebooks available for anyone who wishes to complete their survey at the school or who has questions they would like me to address, just remember to bring your code and we would be happy to help!
This week, we were finally able to start skating. Thank you to all the parents who have helped tie skates! Mr. Stoyles along with the 6/7 and 8/9 CTF classes have been working to install the new shelves to help organize all of the skates, it will be great to see when everything is finished. Thank you to Northside Motorsports who sponsored hot lunch this week which allowed all students to have free hamburgers!
- Saturday, January 27 is Family Literacy Day, I look forward to hearing all the stories from our students about how your family celebrated the day!
- Monday we have a home game against Gerard Redmond.
- Tuesday is the Community Engagement.
- Thursday's hot lunch is Taco in a Bag which was sponsored by Judy Robinson meaning we have another free hot lunch.
- Friday is Twin Day and our Special Person Lunch: Reading Edition.
We have decided to make a change for our K/1 students and the door they use at the beginning of the day. Due to some concerns we have about using the library doors and to ensure all students are safe, K/1s will now use the front door to enter the school when they are getting off the bus or being dropped off at school. We will be sure to let students know and practice this new routine with them.
I hope that everyone has a great week ahead and if you need anything, please reach out to me.
Have a wonderful week,
Bailey Benson

Learning in Action
Elephant Toothpaste!
The 2/3 class created elephant toothpaste this week in science. They followed along with the different steps of the experiment to create the final "explosion"! It was a fun way for students to use their listening and reading skills to follow the procedures and students loved seeing the end result!
Free Candy!
Earlier this school year, the 4/5 class wrote letters that they sent to their favorite candy company. These letters were a great opportunity for students to work on their writing skills in a fun and meaningful way. Over the last few months, a few students have been receiving letters back from the company they wrote to, but this week the class received a huge package from Lotza Fizz! The box was filled with a ton of different candy and they even created a personalized candy box for one of our students. It was an awesome prize that helped students see just how much fun and persuasive writing can be!
Pop Up Shop
The 2/3s worked on their financial literacy skills this week where each students was given $5 of coins that they could spend at the store in their classroom to purchase different items. Students had to figure out which items they could afford and how to use the most of their money. It was a fun and creative way for them to use their math skills and learning about money.
Recorders in Music
The 4/5 have been learning to play different songs using their recorders.
Skating!
Everyone was finally able to go skating this week! Niton is so fortunate to have a rink so close for our students to use regularly!
Math Problems
The 8/9s worked on their daily math problem is an excellent way to use different numeracy, problem solving, and critical thinking skills. Students practiced math in different ways to try and approach the problem.
Letter Awareness
The K/1 class continued their work on letter recognition and sounds. Students have been working hard to ensure they know all of their letters and can hear them, write them, and find them.
Athletics
This past week, our girls and boys teams played a home game against Grand Trunk. Both teams did an amazing job, worked hard, and won their game. Unfortunately, there was a miscommunication with HRH and the girls game scheduled for Wednesday was cancelled. The boys were still able to play and with only six players, they worked incredibly hard and had a great game.
I am very proud of all of our athletes, not because of the scores of our games but how they represent our school with perseverance, sportsmanship, and integrity. I am also grateful for our coaches, Mr. Setzer, Mr. Larson, and Ms. Kennedy, who create these awesome opportunities for our players. Way to go Knights!
