Summer Newsletter 2024
Dear Middlebrook Families,
We hope all of you are having a wonderful summer and finding time to relax and make special memories with family and friends.
As we near the end of July, it’s crucial to make time for ongoing skill practice. Summer days tend to pass quickly, and we want to prevent our students from experiencing the "summer slide." If students don't continue reading, writing, and practicing their math facts over the summer, they can lose about two months of learning. For some, this may mean dropping two reading levels. While enjoying a more relaxed summer schedule, we encourage students to dedicate some time to academic skill practice. Below, you’ll find some summer enrichment opportunities for your child. Let’s work together to ensure the continued success of our students.
In addition, please be sure to check out our PTA section of this newsletter.
Finally, you will receive a "Welcome Back To School" letter, mid August, detailing some important information for the upcoming school year. It will include information from your child's classroom teacher, updated information student form, family handbook, as well as other important information. Please be sure to complete all necessary paperwork before "Meet the Teacher", which will be held on Monday, August 26th. Grades K-2 families 1:00-1:30 and Grades 3-5 families 1:45-2:15. This will create a seamless transition into the new school year.
Wishing you many more warm and sunny summer days ahead! 🌞
Best regards,
Ms. Ponte, Principal
Ms. Molloy, Assistant Principal
WELCOME!!!
We are thrilled to include Ms. Dawn Vega-Garcia as a welcoming presence in our front office as our 12 month secretary. Ms. Dawn has been with the Trumbull Public Schools for 22 years in various roles at TECEC. Not only was she a friendly face as the previous 10 month administrative assistant, but she also has worked as a paraprofessional directly serving students in special education. Her love of children is what has enabled her to be such a hard working and warm member in our school system. At home Ms. Dawn is the proud mother of a recent Trumbull High/Aquaculture graduate who will be entering her first year of college. They share their home with Lola and Hazel, two friendly cats. Some of her favorite things are the color blue, Italian food, relaxing during a rain storm and exploring book stores. Ms. Dawn's sparkly personality will certainly shine at Middlebrook.
Many families take advantage of pre-ordering school supplies. If you decide to order, those supplies will be delivered to your child's classroom prior to the start of the school year.
The supplies included in this week's Smore is a generalized list that would benefit the grade level's needs and will assist your child in being prepared for the school year. However, when you receive information in late August with your child's teacher assignment, there will be a more detailed and specific list that you can utilize to prepare. You are welcome to use your discretion if you would like to prepare early, or wait for the teacher's information.
If you did not chose to pre-order supplies, and would like to do so, please see below to access the supply list by grade level.

Summer Math 2024 Olympic Style
Keeping up with math skills over the summer is super important! We know how hard your kids have worked to learn math during the school year, and we don't want them to forget any of it. That's why we're encouraging them to practice their math skills to keep them sharp.
To make practicing math fun and rewarding, we're inviting your kids to join our Summer Math Olympics Challenge! They can become a Summer Math Olympiad by choosing a competition pathway and aiming for the gold.
If your child competes and earns a medal, they'll be invited to a special Medal Ceremony at school in October to receive their medal and celebrate their math success.
If you want to learn more about the Summer Math Olympics and get your child started in the competition, please visit the Elementary Math Summer Website below. Let's make math practice an exciting part of summer!
TPS Summer Reading
The summer is a great time for rest, relaxation, and reading! To prevent a "summer slide," students are encouraged to read at least 20 minutes a day. There are a few great reading challenges we encourage students to participate in over the summer to help keep their reading muscles strong. Then, you will click on the letter below towards the end of the summer and complete the survey ONE time. The survey link will enter you in both the Governor's Challenge and the First Selectman's Challenge. Volunteering in School
As we move closer to the fall, please take the time to fill out the TPS volunteer form for the 2024-2025 school year. All individuals seeking to volunteer in the Trumbull Public Schools must fill out and sign this “School Volunteer Security Check” form prior to beginning volunteering. The form must be completed annually. No person whose name is listed on the Department of Children and Families (DCF) Child Abuse and Neglect Registry, or who is registered as a sex offender under state or federal law may, volunteer in any District schools. Failure to provide complete or accurate information on this “School Volunteer Security Check” form will disqualify an individual from volunteering in any District school. A volunteer is defined as an individual, other than an employee, who works with the students at any of the Trumbull Public Schools.
If you plan on volunteering, please fill out this form. Please keep in mind, every cell of this form needs a response in order to be processed. If a cell does not apply to you, please indicate N/A. We thank you in advance for volunteering! 😊
Moving/Changing Schools?
If you will be moving / changing schools for the 2024-25 school year, please let your child's classroom teacher and the Middlebrook office know. This will help make a smooth transition for your child and allow time for staff to prepare necessary paperwork.
