EMS Weekly Update
March 4, 2024
February Staff Member of the Month
Congratulations to Ms. Michie, the February Staff Member of the Month. Ms. Michie is one of our 7th grade ELA teachers. One of her nominations from a parent said, "She has always gone above and beyond to make sure my child reached his education growth potential."
Important Information
Monday, March 4th will be a B day.
Parents or guardians of children receiving special education and related services were mailed the Maryland Special Education Parent Involvement Survey from MSDE during the week of February 12, 2024. Parents are asked to complete the survey and return it in the postage-paid envelope by May 24, 2024. The Survey may also be completed online. Parent feedback will help guide efforts to improve special education and related services in SMCPS. To learn more, please visit https://www.mdparentsurvey.com.
Attention parents of 6th grade students: All students entering 7th grade must have documentation of having received a Tdap and a Meningitis (MCV) vaccine before the first day of school. We wanted to make you aware that the St. Mary's County Health Department will be holding an optional immunization clinic for 6th graders at Esperanza Middle School on Monday, April 15th. If your student has not already received these vaccines or the nurses do not have documentation of receiving these vaccines, you will be receiving an email from the nurse(s) with the registration link.

Career Advisor Update
In February, the 8th grade Social Studies classes completed a lesson and activity on Time Management in Naviance. They learned that procrastination is often a response to stress and some strategies for dealing with it. This is an important life skill to develop for high school and beyond.
The 7th grade Social Studies classes discovered their Holland’s Code or RIASEC: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, or Conventional. The students watched a video about each career personality type and tallied which interests aligned with them to “claim their RIASEC.” In the Spring, 7th graders will learn more and explore careers in their RIASEC type.
