The Wayland Union Board of Education met on Monday, January 13th, at Baker Elementary for their regular meeting.

Presentations/Reports
Recognition for Kynlee Boomsma
- Kynlee Boomsma baked cookies as a holiday treat for all of our staff members in the month of December.
Baker Elementary Building Report
- Amanda Nast began her presentation by welcoming the board members and thanking Baker staff members who were able to attend the meeting. Mrs. Nast mimicked the process of Capturing Kids Hearts in her presentation by including Good Things and a launch. She then went over behavioral data with the positive behavior intervention system, Fall NWEA scores with Baker's goals for the year, and a brief explanation of early childhood offerings. Her presentation ended with a 'day in the life' video of one of their Y5 students.
Student Board Members Report
- Matthew Chubb and Teagan Robinson shared that LOC club is preparing for the Snowcoming dance. Robotics just kicked off their season last week, they are busy preparing for their first competition in March. PALs is hosting a Cinderella dress and Prince Charming tie shop for high school students. Student Council is wrapping up last minute details for Coaches vs Cancer. Theater is preparing for their upcoming show, "Tuck Everlasting." Boys swim and dive is preparing for a meet against TK, they recently defeated Hastings. Girl's Wresting is off to a great start with two girls finishing in the top five during a meet over Winter Break. Varsity Competitive Cheer recently took first place at a competition.
Governance Team Good News
- Tim Reeves mentioned that January is Board of Education month, they will be recognized at the next meeting on January 28th.

Administration Reports
Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Operations
- Leslie Wagner shared our year to date revenue vs expenditures. She also shared that in December, our district was able to attend the Gun Lake Tribe Revenue Sharing event and we are beyond grateful for their continued support towards our district. Progress is being made on the Filter First programming. Our mechanics at the bus garage are thrilled to receive a scanner with diagnostics software and a new plow on the mechanic truck. Our business office is busy wrapping up W2s and 1099s.
Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services
- Teresa Fulk shared that we kicked off our return from winter break with winter assessments, including NWEA and Running Records. Mrs. Fulk mentioned that the middle school submitted four new course proposals for the 2025-2026 school year. She also shared that our K-5 ELA pilot program is excited to make final recommendation on the program for next school year. Lastly, she has begun working on the summer learning program.
Superintendent
- Tim Reeves welcomed our two new board members, Stephanie Tromp and Erin Stepek. He also shared that he will be taking a few Leisure Life members on a tour of the future Administration Office. Lastly, he shared that this Saturday is the 3rd Annual Big Bear Moon Dance at our high school, this event starts at 5pm and is open to the community.
Bond Update
Tim Reeves shared architectural renderings of the future Administration office.
New Business - Items
Contracts for Pool
- Two representatives from Triangle went through the 19 bids the district received for the pool construction.
ADA Walk to Middle School Ball Fields
- Adding an ADA walk to the middle school was listed as an alternate in the pool bid.
Updated Triangle Contract
- Tim Reeves shared that this is a renegotiation of the original contract.
2025-26 School Bus Purchase
- Leslie Wagner is requesting to stay on trend with our previous year and purchase two new International Buses.
Gun Lake Tribe Revenue Sharing Allocations
- Leslie Wagner is proposing moving from our current allocations to 21% instructional, 21% community, 14% transportation, and 44% facilities for the 2025-2026 school year. This is a more accurate picture of how the money is actually being spent and improves our transparency.

Board Topics
Pete Zondervan thanked TowerPinkster and Triangle for all their hard work on getting our construction projects going. He also thanked the student board members and Amanda Nast for their contributions to the meeting.
Becky Hohnke welcomed Stephanie Tromp and Erin Stepek to the board. She enjoyed Baker Elementary's presentation. She also thanked Leslie Wagner for getting out into the district.
Stephanie Tromp wanted to thank the community for electing her to the school board, she is looking forward to the next four years. She also gave a shout out to our wrestling team.
Theresa Dobry thanked Amanda Nast for hosting the meeting.
The meeting went into closed session at 7:52pm.
