Overview of Formative Assessments
11/6/2020
Teachers, coaches and administrators are collaborating to provide students with effective, standards based instruction in all current schooling models. We meet regularly to plan instruction, based on student feedback when checking for understanding during class instruction and through additional formative assessments.
The goal of these assessments is to monitor student learning and guide educators in making curriculum decisions. Formative assessments are not always formal assessment and generally embedded into the lesson.
This may include digital journals, self assessments and exit tickets. In addition, we have online platforms and assessments that students also participate in throughout the school year to help teachers personalize, enhance and target specific areas of instruction.
Interactive learning platforms and tools that also provide teachers with feedback include:
Reading A-Z (RAZ Kids)
Reading A-Z provides students with access to online reading resources in many languages, including Spanish and English. There are also activities to reinforce reading skills, that include phonics embedded instruction, alphabet and high-frequency resources, shared reading books, readers theater scripts, fluency passages, and various interactive formative assessments.
Students participate in running records assessments throughout the years for teachers to evaluate a student's reading progress by systematically evaluating oral reading and comprehension skills. During remote learning, students will be using the Reading A-Z platform to participate in the running records.

Upcoming ESL Writing Assessment: For Grade 3-5 students participating in ESL Instruction
ESL Teachers will be administering the biannual ESL Writing Assessment to students (remote and in-person) to students identified as English Learners in grades 3-12, during the following testing windows:
First Interim Assessment Testing Window
November 9-December 4
Final Interim Assessment Testing Window:
March 29-April 30
This assessment is administered twice a year and is designed to take 45-60 minutes, including time to brainstorm, review the directions, and updates for remote learning.
Students will be notified by their ESL teacher when they will be taking the assessment.
ESL teachers use the data from the writing assessment to monitor our students’ English language development and to inform instruction.
Dual Language FPS Oral Language Observation Assessment Matrix
K-12 teachers in the Dual Language program use the FPS Oral Language Observation Matrix (OLA-F) to assess students' oral language development in Spanish or Portuguese.
Teachers build speaking opportunities:
to allow students to demonstrate their highest level of performance in social and academic comprehension and oral language production in different content areas.
to measure students’ growth in oral language proficiency.
This data is used to provide students with personalized oral language instruction throughout the school day.
