Notes From the Principal
June Farewell
This year, we bid farewell to kindergarten teacher Cathy Robinson and librarian Donna Mason as they begin the next phase of their life: Retirement.
Over the past nineteen years, Mrs. Robinson has had a profound impact on the lives of hundreds of children in Hopkinton. Mrs. Mason joined us the year we opened Marathon in 2018. We will miss them both and wish them well.
We asked some students what Mrs. Robinson and Mrs. Mason should do when they retire. Who knows, some of these suggestions may be put into action!
Mrs. Robinson should...
Go to first grade.
Work in a construction site.
Do stuff with her family.
Take her dog Moose for a walk at Whitehall.
Have a dance party.
Teach at Hopkins.
Work in the gym.
Play some video games.
Say goodbye to us.
Mrs. Mason should...
Be a firefighter.
Work at a bank.
Cook.
Work on her computer.
Do another job.
Be a scientist.
Work at the Middle School.
Relax.
Be our guest teacher for library.
Kindergarten and First Grade Nights
We look forward to seeing you at school!
Visits are 6:00 - 6:30 pm
Please do not bring siblings or extended family members to this event as it is a special time to visit your child's classroom and meet their teacher as they show you where they have been spending their school days.
Classrooms will be crowded so it is truly only an evening for your student and parents/guardians. Doors used for arrival and dismissal will be monitored by staff for multiple points of entry.

Marathon Music Celebration
We are proud to share that the Third Annual First Grade Music Celebration will be on June 18th. First-grade students will participate in a music program that will feature many of the song selections they have learned with Mrs. Moran over the past two years.
This program is for students only. The program will be recorded for viewing on YouTube. The program is at 9:30 a.m. on June 18th. Once the link to the program is available, we will share it with first-grade families.
Mrs. Moran and the students are looking forward to this opportunity to perform together. Mr. Craig Hay, the Music Department Subject Matter Leader, has worked closely with Mrs. Moran to plan for this event. As students move through the grades, this celebration lays the foundation for future music programs. It all starts here!
5th Annual Pride Festival
If you are looking for a way to support our community’s LGBTQIA+ population for Pride Month, please consider participating in the Hopkinton Pride Festival, which will be held on Saturday, June 21st, 1- 4 pm, at the Hopkinton Center for the Arts. More details about the event can be found here.
June Field Days
Students should wear comfortable clothing; sneakers are mandatory. We have assigned each class a shirt color. If possible, please have your child wear a T-shirt in the assigned color.
Over the years, our staff has noticed that the class t-shirts made for Field Day have taken on “a life of their own” and become a focal point rather than the original intention of Field Day. The objective of Field Day is for the kids to have fun for just a few hours, and it shouldn’t be about who is wearing what or which shirt is better. There have also been financial considerations for the shirts that put families in difficult positions. We respectfully request that you refrain from organizing class t-shirts for Field Day. Field Day shouldn't come with a cost (T-shirts, wristbands, water bottles, etc.). We just want to have basic fun with any shirt in your class color, whether it's yours or your siblings'.
We also ask that the students be prepared with the following items:
Labeled water bottle (we will refill if necessary)
Sneakers with socks are required for participation in the activities.
Hat (especially if it’s sunny)
Previously applied sunscreen (we cannot apply sunscreen at school)
Please note - this event is only for students and parent volunteers who have been scheduled. Field days are not spectator events.

Kindergarten and First Grade Health Class News
Mrs. Lewinsky, Ms. Lyons, Mrs. Ryder
Kindergarten and first-grade health classes are currently learning about safety unit topics. In this unit, students have been exploring important safety skills and concepts such as: the three D’s for telling an adult (in dangerous, destructive, and disturbing situations), how to get help in emergency situations by calling 9-1-1, applying strategies to prevent fires and burns in hypothetical situations, and how to take action in a fire emergency.
During this unit, students explored how to call 9-1-1 and learned the types of situations that would require them to call 9-1-1. Students were able to successfully differentiate between emergency and non-emergency situations. They were challenged to recall, and if they didn’t already know it, to learn their home telephone number/parents’ cell phone number(s), and home address(es). Throughout this unit, we were pleased by the number of students who increased their knowledge of their phone number(s) and address(es). Please help your student learn this important safety information if they do not yet know it.
In the fire safety lessons, students discussed and had an opportunity to demonstrate what they would do if a fire alarm sounded in their house and what to do if their clothes caught on fire. Through play, students were able to show how a family should safely react to hearing a fire alarm sound in the night. Students made their ‘family’ exit the house, go to their meeting place, call 9-1-1, and then wait at their meeting place for the fire department to come and rescue the pets inside the house.
The fire safety lessons stressed the importance of creating a family meeting place. It is suggested that the meeting place be outside the front of the home. Families should practice this at least two times a year: actually hear what the fire alarm sounds like from the room where you sleep, and then go to your meeting place outside, where all family members would meet. Many students shared their family’s designated meeting place during Health class. We were impressed to hear some students describe how their family has even practiced going to their meeting place!
Music News
It has been a wonderful, musical year with your children! How I enjoyed watching them grow in so many ways, and to see and hear how they have become fine musicians. We have worked with many elements of music: storytelling through music, moving through music, understanding and writing music and rhythms, developing our singing voices and learning to appreciate a large spectrum of music of the finest composers - from Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) with the Four Seasons to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) and his symphonies, concertos and sonatas.
Kindergarten students and children in Grade One have been learning how to sing the diatonic scale from the octave (low Do to high Do ) and understand the intervals and pitches in between. Many sing beautifully on pitch! Kindergarten students loved singing ‘Spring Has Sprung’ and the classes have learned how to play an accompaniment on the pentatonic scale. Students in Grade one learned to sing a song composed by Mozart, ‘The Cocoon’, which explains how ‘Sir Caterpillar' becomes ‘Sir Butterfly’. First Grade children worked hard all year, preparing songs for our ‘in-school’ Music Celebration. They will enjoy singing several songs together, many from different cultures (including Ghana, China, and Spain) - and also one that they composed!
All the Marathon students look forward to fun movement activities in June, involving beanbags, pom-poms, various singing games, and dances. Together, we will compile a list of our favorite songs and activities. We will enjoy rekindling these together during our last few weeks of the school year! Have a relaxing summer.
Musically Yours,
Mrs. Moran

Report Card Access
Report cards will be available for parents to access on the last day of school, June 23 through the PowerSchool Parent Portal at 3:00 pm. It is strongly suggested you promptly print or download a copy for your records. Please be aware that the Portal will be disabled for a few weeks beginning August 1 as we prepare for the 2025 - 2026 school year.
We are asking parents to be mindful to have a report card on hand as it is often requested for athletics, camps, or other student activities. The school office will not be able to provide a printed copy of report cards for these circumstances.
Get to Know Marathon
Lauren Dubeau, Principal, and Eric Mitchell, Assistant Principal, will host a transition event for incoming kindergarteners and new-to-Marathon first graders. Times will be assigned by class. An August tour of the building and bus experience will introduce students to Marathon on August 19, 20, or 21 from 9:00 - 12:00. Details will be shared over the summer. Students and 1-2 adults will attend at the assigned time.
Are you moving over the summer?
If you know your child will not be attending school in Hopkinton Public Schools next year, please email moffice@hopkinton.k12.ma.us and fill out this withdrawal form so records arrive at their new school promptly.
SEPAC has asked our Marathon Elementary School special educators, related service providers, and paraprofessionals to make a wish list of items that would be helpful in their work with students with special needs. (Example: therapy supplies, items for the classroom, equipment for learning ADLs, or anything that would be helpful to students). The goal is to provide enriching materials that further the work that our educators do every day. Similar to how a PTO provides additional educational items and supplies, Project SHARK hopes to add materials and supplies that enhance and add on to classroom materials.
SEPAC is proud to support our amazing teachers. We hope that this project puts a spotlight on special education, the phenomenal work of our educators, and the different needs of students with disabilities.
