What We're Reading: VPL Book Chats
I had the unfortunate task of repainting our kitchen over the weekend, so I decided to take advantage of the Libby app and listened to the audiobook 'Me Before You' by Jojo Moyes. I typically head for the hills when romance novels are pushed my way but there's something about British romance novels that just hits different. I hope this doesn't ruin my street cred...
Louisa Clark is a shopgirl who has barely left her small village, still lives at home with her younger sister (whom she envies) that has a small child, and is supporting her entire family on meager wages whilst dating a man that she clearly does not love. It's a "Going No Where" sort of life. She inevitably loses her shopgirl job and finds herself applying as a caretaker for a man, Will Treynor, who has all the trappings of a heartthrob: wealthy, handsome, intelligent, and well-traveled. But being wheelchair bound after a horrific accident has altered his entire life and his personality. Enter: gloom and doom. Moyes captured doomed romance well, but I was left with a bad taste in my mouth when I discovered that love, wealth, and intelligence sometimes isn't enough.
Check out this 4.26 Goodreads.com rated book at the library or on the Libby app today and shed a tear or two. Happy reading, friends!

VPL Note: We have 'Powerless' and its sequel 'Reckless' by Lauren Roberts both available in regular type.
The Kingdom of Ilya boasts its Elites who possess super human powers. These powers were strangely given to them by a mysterious Plague, so long as they survived it. However, those who were able to conquer the illness but possess no powers themselves are known as Ordinaries. The king banished all Ordinaries from his kingdom, citing that they possessed a disease that could drain the powers of the Elite. Paedyn Gray is an Ordinary living in the slums of Ilya, homeless and stealing what she can to survive. Her luck changes when she unknowingly saves one of the Princes of Ilya, and earns a spot in the annual Trials. Paedyn quickly has to learn to hide her Ordinary status and survive the brutal games. 10/10 recommend. The story itself seems like a mix between Hunger Games and Fourth Wing.

Author Spotlight: Sarah Pearse
VPL has the Detective Elin Warner series by Sarah Pearse available in regular type.
Sarah Pearse lives by the sea in South Devon with her husband and two daughters. She studied English and Creative Writing at the University of Warwick and worked in Brand PR for a variety of household brands. After moving to Switzerland in her twenties, she spent every spare moment exploring the mountains and the Swiss Alpine town of Crans Montana, the dramatic setting that inspired her novel.
Sarah has always been drawn to the dark and creepy - remote spaces and abandoned places - so when she read an article in a local Swiss magazine about the history of sanatoriums in the area, she knew she’d found the spark of the idea for her debut novel, The Sanatorium. Her short fiction has been published in a wide variety of magazines and has been shortlisted for several prizes.
