NOTRE DAME CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL
18 February 2021
Yesterday morning the Year Three to Five children attended Mass to celebrate Ash Wednesday which marks the beginning of the Liturgical Season of Lent. At the Mass Father Quynh Blessed the Ashes that are made from burnt palms from the previous year’s Palm Sunday celebration. Normally we would have a cross marked on our forehead with these Ashes but, due to the global pandemic, we were instructed to sprinkle a small amount of the Ashes on the top of the head of recipients. Whilst the mode of receiving the Ashes has changed, the message reminding us of our humanity and that we are part of God’s family, remains the same. As we enter this Season of Lent, our focus is drawn to the three Pillars of Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving. Over the next three weeks I hope to elaborate on each of these.
THANK YOU P&F
As a lead into Lent, our very generous P&F provided pancakes for the entire school this week on Shrove (or pancake) Tuesday. The tradition of this day is to use up many of the fattening foods in the house prior to commencing fasting during Lent. Throughout the ages flour, milk and eggs have been staples in most homes and they combine very nicely to make pancakes, thus the alternate name for the day. Thank you to Clare Grosser who co-ordinated the day, and her extensive band of helpers who produced very tasty pancakes and put a smile on all of our faces.
YEAR SIX CAMP
The Year Six children and teachers were very fortunate to be able to head to Albany on Monday morning as the travel restrictions were lifted by the Premier. School camp is very much a rite of passage for the Year Sixes as they commence their final year of Primary School. They have been engaging in a wide range of fun educational activities and we have also seen their self-organisational skills and their independence develop as the week has progressed. I’m sure they will all enjoy a very relaxing weekend after such an exciting week of fun activities, especially the staff.
MERIT AWARDS
The first of our Merit Awards for the year will be presented tomorrow morning. As I will be away on camp with the Year Sixes, the Awards will be presented by the teachers in each Year level within their classrooms. Unfortunately, parents will not be able to attend however, the presentations will be filmed and shared with families.
DADS’ & KIDS’ CAMPOUT
I met with Adam Ciccarone and Stuart Doncon, the organizers of this great event, on Tuesday afternoon and the planning is progressing well for us to be able to return to holding the campout in the school grounds on 19 March. Please look out for the registration forms that will be sent to families in the next few days.
UPCOMING EVENTS
- Reconciliation Commitment Masses will be held this weekend:6.00pm Saturday and 10.00am Sunday
- Year 4-6 Swimming Trials – Tuesday 23 February. Please refer to Mr Webb’s note, that was sent home with children, for specific details.

PANCAKES TO MARK SHROVE TUESDAY
On Tuesday, our lovely P&F volunteers surprised all the children with a special treat, pancakes! The children thoroughly enjoyed eating the delicious pancakes to mark Shrove Tuesday. On behalf of the children, I would like to thank all the members of the P&F who prepared, cooked and delivered the pancakes to all our children.
ADMINISTRATION
HEALTH CARE CARD
In accordance with the Catholic Education WA Ltd policy the school provides considerable assistance with payment of school fees. A reminder to all Health Care Card (HCC) holders that discount applies to the HCC holder only. This discount is applied to tuition fees, amenities and building levy charges. All other school fees are payable. HCC holders are requested to complete a form available at reception and present your current Health Care Card.
ABSENTEE
An SMS will be sent to parents if your child is absent and you have not notified Administration by completing an absentee form or an email. Please reply to the SMS with your full name, name of student, date and reason student did not attend school. Just a reminder, it is a legal requirement to have on the student's file the reason for not attending school.
PHOTOGRAPH/VIDEO/NAME PERMISSION FORM
As part of the school’s publicity activities, situations may occasionally arise when the school, Catholic Education of WA (CEWA) or local media will need to take photographs and or video footage of Notre Dame children for publication in newspapers, CEWA documents, training videos and or the CEWA website. This also includes images taken during school performances, activities and sporting events. Permission forms have been distributed to each student and we ask that you sign and return them as soon as possible. Thank you to all the parents who have already returned the Permission forms.
MEDICAL/DIETARY RESTRICTIONS
Please do not send your child to school if they are unwell. This is very important not only for your child but the health of all children and staff. If your child has a medical condition that the school needs to be made aware of, please advise Administration as soon as possible. The appropriate forms will be sent to you to be completed, signed and returned to the front office. Please also email Administration if your child has any dietary restrictions.
ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICATATION
In special circumstances, staff will be able to assist with the administration of medication. In these cases, Catholic Education of Western Australia’s policy requires principals to ensure that a comprehensive written authority is obtained from the student’s parents/guardians in a written form authorising a member of staff to administer the prescribed medication and dosage. These forms are available at the front office. In an emergency an email authorising the staff to administer medication will suffice. No medication will be administered without this consent form or email and please note, no medication is to be placed in the student’s school bag.

YEAR 3 CLASS NEWS
The Year 3 students have commenced the year in a very positive way. They have been mindful of caring for their classmates and are committed to showing respect and gratitude to their peers and teachers. We have begun our preparation for Reconciliation and the students are looking forward to receiving this Sacrament later this term. Our focus has been on finding ways to restore and heal our damaged relationships with friends, family and God. We are learning how our conscience is a gift from God, that guides us to choose between right and wrong. On Shrove Tuesday we were very lucky to be treated to some delicious pancakes by the P&F, to help us prepare for the season of Lent.
In mathematics we completed a fun activity collecting class data to find out what our friend’s favourite things are. We recorded this information into graphs and tallies and then used these to answer questions about the data. We have also been revising our knowledge of place value by playing some fun games with partners. We look forward to learning about bigger numbers throughout the year.
In writing this term we are looking at persuasive texts and how we can use them to convince people to believe our point-of-view. We will be focussing on the structure of these texts and the strategies, such as the use of powerful words and facts, to prove our arguments.

NOTRE DAME CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL UNIFORMS SECOND HAND BUY & SELL
Did you know that a second hand uniform page, which is hosted and managed by Notre Dame CPS parents, operates on Facebook? This is a great place for you to buy and sell quality second hand uniforms. The active site is available to all members of the community who access Facebook. You can also access second hand uniforms at the school's uniform shop.
SCHOOL BANKING
School banking, other than teaching your child to save, is a great fundraiser for the school. Our school receives a regular savers’ contribution of $5 for every 10 deposits placed by your child.
Open an account with the Commonwealth Bank either online or in the bank and then your child can bring the deposit book to me in the library every Thursday morning between 8.00am and 8.30am. They will receive a token for every deposit and after 10 tokens will receive a gold token and are able to choose a prize.
I look forward to meeting you soon.
Kind regards
Barbara Jamieson
