Principal's Message - Read-A-Thon
Dear McKenzie Families,
A huge thank you to our amazing PTA for organizing our Read-a-Thon! We're so excited to see our students diving into books while supporting our sister school, Carman-Buckner, with Thanksgiving meal cards. What a wonderful way to give back!
We're also incredibly grateful to all of you who have participated by gathering pledges and donations. Your support is truly appreciated! Now, it's time for the best part: reading! Encourage your children to read, read, read through April 21st.
Please remember to turn in your pledge forms and reading logs between April 25th and May 1st. Winners will be announced the week of May 5th.
And don't forget the Reading Bingo Challenge for a chance to win a prize! Complete your bingo card and turn it in with your reading logs.
Happy reading, everyone!
Dana
Parent Placement Input K-3
We are approaching the time of the year when we begin to consider our student placement for next school year. Student placement will continue to be a collaborative, individualized process. The placement process includes a review of each child's individual learning and social-emotional needs with a team of teachers, including your child's classroom teacher, the specials’ teachers, and resource teachers.
Although we feel confident in our ability to appropriately place your child, we do welcome parent input. If you feel that extraordinary factors exist that the school should be aware of, please answer the questions on this form and submit this form by April 14th. These factors might include your child's special learning needs and behavioral development. Please do not include teacher requests, as every child’s experience with a teacher is unique.
If you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. We will work diligently to ensure the most appropriate placement for every student.
*Please note that a separate incoming kindergarten form will be sent to all incoming kindergarten student families in May.
**Highcrest Middle School will also be sending out a parent input form for our all incoming fifth grade students.
Thank you,
Dana Nasiakos

District 39 Information on High School “Paranoia” Game
We are aware that some high school seniors may be participating in “Paranoia,” a game in which players use nerf toy weapons to eliminate competitors, often using the element of surprise. As the game progresses, it often extends into areas of the local community.
We want to take this time to remind our families that all weapons, including replica or toy weapons, are not allowed on school grounds at any time, per District policy. Students who violate this policy will be subject to disciplinary action. Please reference Board Policy 7:190 Student Behavior for more information. The game of paranoia should not be played on school grounds at any time.
D39 SEL News
Beginning April 28 and running through May 9, students in grades K-4 will be participating in the SEL WEB assessment of social-emotional competencies. SEL WEB is a narrated assessment where students use their headphones to listen to the prompts and respond on the iPad/computer. There are two versions of the assessment: SEL WEB EE for grades K-3, and SEL WEB LE for grade 4. You can learn more about the format of these assessments HERE. If you are interested in opting your child out of this assessment, please contact your child's classroom teacher directly.
This assessment aligns with the SEL competencies taught using our Everyday Speech Curriculum, and the results from the assessments are used by classroom teachers to guide that instruction, and pinpoint areas of need or support for students. For more information about the social-emotional objectives at your child’s grade level, and other general information about SEL in District 39, please visit the D39 Social Emotional Learning Website.
