Days of the Cycle This Week
Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, Day 4, Day 5
Quote of the Week
“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
A Note from the Principal . . . .
On my way into school on Tuesday morning, I saw a middle school student walking with his dad to the bus stop. The student was adorned in the typical middle school accessories, a backpack, sweat pants, sneakers, a hoodie, and oh yes, a “squid cap”. For those of you not familiar, a visual may help here: (Squid Hat pictured above!)
As he walked along next to his father with a huge smile and a bit of a skip at 6:45 a.m. in the morning, I could not help but match his smile. His joy in being able to express his individuality was contagious, and I have to admit, many decades past my middle school years, I was a bit envious.
I, like many of my middle school colleagues, was drawn to middle school, our calling often shaped by an experience as a child, a positive influence of a teacher, a challenging experience we wanted to change for the next generation or just a need to work with children at the most influential age. We all recall the carefree years of elementary school, when you could wear those favorite Pikachu slippers, mismatched socks, a tiara or ballerina tutu without even a second look by your classmates or teachers.
In middle school we work so hard to create safety around identity at a time when it is so fragile and vulnerable, when children are exploring who they are and who they want to be. It is also a time when one’s identity is under pressure to conform. In middle school is where individuals seek safety in sameness and begin to make assumptions about others based upon how they identify, seeking to sort and classify them, all leading to harm.
As we engage in work around identity, bias, and microaggressions, we need to counter with proactive and intentional acts of understanding, acceptance and kindness. We need to create inclusive and safe environments where acts of individuality such as adorning the “squid hat” becomes a celebrated expression of individuality and an anecdote that frees students from the “something else" that others want them to become.
You can see why the squid hat, then, was well deserving of a broad smile from this seasoned middle school principal on a Tuesday morning. As the adults shepherding the children in our care through these precious yet fragile years, join me in protecting the freedom of our children to wear their version of the squid hat.

PARTNERSHIP WITH THE NEWTON EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER
We are fortunate to welcome the Newton Early Childhood Center to our Albemarle neighborhood. They moved in to the former Horace Mann School over a month ago. In the coming months we look forward to partnering with them on learning buddy activities.
As part of being good neighbors, we want your help in reinforcing to our children that the preschool play area should be off-limits. The play equipment is only suitable for preschool age children. and unfortunately as of late some of their equipment has been misused and broken by older aged children.
We hope to place our middle school students in a mentoring role with their new preschool partners, and as such together we should remind them of our responsibility for exhibiting positive behaviors. Thank you in advance for sharing this message with your children at home.
2nd Annual Career Day
Day Middle School is currently planning our 2nd annual career day and we are looking for guest speakers! Career day will take place for 7th and 8th graders on Friday, June 2 between approximately 8-10:45 a.m.. If you know of someone with a career path that you think middle schoolers would find interesting, please reach out to either Meghan Hudson or Jenn Gritter for more information at the emails below:
Volunteers will need to complete CORI forms and participate in a brief group zoom orientation/info. session with Principal Mann before hand. We are hoping to have a range of careers and backgrounds represented and make students feel excited about the possibilities that await them beyond middle school.
Thanks for partnering with us on this! We are hoping to finalize our list of speakers by Monday, May 1 to allow us time to survey students about which sessions they’re interested in attending and create student schedules for the day.
