Leyden hosts Navy recruits for Thanksgiving
On Thanksgiving, November 28, Leyden High Schools will host a holiday celebration for approximately 100 Navy Recruits from Great Lakes Naval Station. Leyden will send buses up to the base in Waukegan, and the recruits will spend the day from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. enjoying a full thanksgiving meal and experience at East Leyden. Treats will be prepared by the Leyden culinary students, entertainment by the Chamber Choir, and there will be games, including football, table tops, bags, and even chromebooks and cell phones so that the recruits can connect with their families.
“It gives us such joy to be able to treat those who serve our country a family-style experience at a time when we know they aren’t able to be with their own families,” said Superintendent, Dr. Nick Polyak. “Our hope is that their time with us helps to show them the love and support of our Leyden communities.”
Leyden earns “commendable” designation
The Illinois State Board of Education honored Leyden High School District 212 with the distinction of “commendable” on the Illinois Report Card for the 2023-24 school year. This honor represents gains for both East and West Leyden, and reflects the district’s ongoing commitment to student achievement and attendance efforts.
Illinois is required by federal accountability law to assign each school a descriptor of how well it is meeting the needs of its students. This designation is based on several factors regarding academic performance including: English, math, and science proficiency, graduation and attendance rates and English language learners’ progress.
“Our improvements and overall stability are a reflection of the dedication of our students, staff, parents and community partners,” said Superintendent Nick Polyak. “We continue to strive to educate, enrich and empower our students, and always want the best possible high school experience for the communities we serve.”
The full Illinois Report Cards are available online at www.illinoisreportcard.com and on the Leyden website.
District seeks state renewal for e-learning days
In recent years, the district has utilized e-learning days in place of days to ensure that students don't lose a day of instruction if we are unable to hold a regular school day because of winter weather or a need to close our buildings. As part of the renewal process through the Illinois State Board of Education, Leyden is holding a public hearing at its November Board of Education meeting on November 14, to gain input from the school community. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. and takes place at East Leyden, 3400 Rose Street in Franklin Park. Please contact the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction at 847-451-3095 for details.
Leyden offers virtual parent series
Leyden Student Services offers a virtual parent series through a partnership with Glenbard Parent Series (GPS) that provides free, public, day and evening sessions.
On Thursday, November 7, Ron Leiber will present, "The Price you pay for College: An Entirely New Road Map for the Biggest Financial Decision Your Family Will Ever Make."
