Sept. 29: "Looking Forward, Looking Backward," Rev. Sarah Oelberg
The air is full of people talking about our nation going forward, versus going back. Forward is supposedly hopeful; back is self-serving and stupid, some say. This made me think about my life, and how things in my past affected me, and how the way some of those things have changed is affecting our nation now.
Sarah Oelberg has been a special education teacher, has written special ed. curriculum for our U.S. Office of Education, was a faculty member at Yeshiva University in New York and at NYU, and trained special ed. teachers in Iowa. She followed her heart as the first in her six-generation Unitarian family to become a UU minister. After serving churches in Nebraska and Minnesota, she retired in 2001. She and husband Gerald raised four children and have six grand- and four great-grandchildren.
October 6 – Volunteer Appreciation Sunday, Rev. Alexander and Julie Zumach
On this Sunday, Rev. Alexander and Julie Zumach will lead a service in appreciation for all the many volunteers who make UCN possible. We will hear from four active volunteers who greatly contribute to our success here at Unitarian Church North, and I will offer a brief reflection entitled “The Priesthood of all Believers,” which will explain and celebrate an affirmation that has been at the center of Unitarian Universalism since our very beginnings as an “organized” religion. Do be with us for this lively and important service.
You're invited...
to the Launch Party for our Capital Campaign to eliminate our church mortgage and strengthen our reserve funds.

Religious Education
This Week in RE
Thanks be to Trees - our K- 2nd graders will continue their World of Wonder curriculum. They'll learn about trees' vital role in our lives. Activities may include using their bodies in a guided meditation in which they grow from acorns to oak trees and learn about the importance of trees in the web of life.
The 3rd to 6th graders will continue their exploration of moral issues in the Faith, Hope and Prayer lesson. Children will think about actions they can take that help make their gratitude be felt by others, their apologies be heard by others, their wishes and hopes become real, and their loving (healing) wishes to be felt by others.
The goal of this week's OWL class, The Language of Sexuality, is to encourage positive, open discourse in this program and with parents/guardians, partners, health care providers, and others.
Brainstorming Event
Living Out the Core Value of Interdependence (UUs, Animals, & Plants)—Can We Pull It Off?

We will have lively discussion of the revamped statement on Interdependence as well as a free plant-based lunch. Any questions? LGBTQ+ Film Screening Oct. 15 by the Germantown Community Coalition
Did you know there are over 35,000 mothers—many from Christian backgrounds—who are willing to risk the loss of friends, family, and their faith communities to keep their LGBTQ+ kids safe? Connected by private Facebook groups, they help each other overcome the teachings of their churches and call themselves “mama bears” because they fight ferociously for the civil rights of the entire LGBTQ+ community. The Mama Bears documentary, a film by Daresha Kyi, celebrates a few of their stories.
In partnership with a number of other community nonprofits, we are thrilled to announce our upcoming FREE screening of Mama Bears on October 15th at 6:30pm at the Germantown High School Performing Arts Center (W180N11501 River Lane Germantown). Following the film presentation, there will be a discussion panel featuring local faith leaders, advocates, and families to examine the importance of the film. As the LGBTQ+ community continues to come under attack, we want to bring people together in the spirit of learning and growing in order to be a more welcoming place for all. In addition, there will be two LGBT history exhibits on display (https://vince.lgbt/)
For more details and to register, please visit the events page on our website: germantowncommunitycoalition.org/events.

Need Stuff?
The RE team is busy getting our classrooms cleaned out, cleaned up and refreshed for our growing RE program and miscellaneous meetings/events held here at the church. As various Adopt a Room volunteers have worked on different spaces throughout the church, some things have been temporarily stored in the Senior Youth Room. Our intent has been to Reuse and Recycle as best we could. Now it’s time for things to leave the building. If interested, please take a look in the Youth Room to see if there’s anything you’d like to take with you. What’s left by Sunday, October 13 will be hauled out to make way for the new.
Please Note
If you are discarding furniture to the dumpster area, please do not put it in the dumpster. Please place the furniture either inside the fenced area or on the east side of the fence on the concrete pad. When the dumpster becomes full of furniture, there is no place for regular trash to be stored and must be left outside the dumpster itself. This gives those four-legged critters an invitation to rip open the plastic bag and spread trash everywhere. Thank you for your support.
Zoom SCRIP User Training - October 9th, 7 pm
SCRIP is an important fundraiser for UCN. As well as offering gift cards for so many of the retailers we shop at (local groceries, restaurants, Amazon, gas stations, Zappos, etc.), UCN gets a percent of the card value from each card's sale to help support the church.
Please join Rob Powell for a presentation on on-line ordering and reloading of SCRIP cards.

First Sunday Lunch is back after taking a brief summer break!!
Sunday, October 6 is going to be “Hot and Delicious!”
Please join your fellow UCN members/friends in Fellowship Hall after the morning service on October 6 for a scrumptious meal of a variety of hot and delicious entrees, salads, desserts, and beverages. Suggested donation $4/adult; $10/family limit.
If your last name as listed in the membership directory falls within the last names Ahrenhoerster to Gomez, you are cordially invited to provide a dish that serves 10-12 people for the October 6 Lunch. Dishes can be dropped off in the kitchen before the service. There will be someone there as early as 9 am to receive them. If it better suits you, salads, desserts, beverages, and set-up volunteers are also on our "must-haves" list so you need not feel confined to an entree offering. Thank you in advance for your contributions! October FSL coordinator, Judy DeLillo has sent out email requests and will be communicating with volunteers throughout the coming month for planning and coordinating. Contact Judy at judelillo2@gmail.com to convey your contribution choice ASAP.
West Lobby Photo Board
The West Lobby Adopt-a-Room group has plans to refresh the photo collage with pictures that depict more recent members, children and activities of UCN. We are requesting that members submit photo files for consideration to be printed on photo paper and included in our display. Please, send photo files with good exposure and focus to photos@ucnorth.org with identification of the event and people/children depicted. Wait a week or so for email address to be set up. It is safest to ask for permission of all those in a photo to have their likeness displayed. Examples of pictures might include these: RE class, playground use, extracurricular events like Trunk or Treat, Social Justice Committee events, Holiday program, Choir performance, Guest in the Pulpit, Message for All Ages …
Thank you
