Leadership Announcements
Mr. Makovichuk - Assistant Principal at Wild Rose School (2025/26)
As we all look forward to Spring Break, and with a renewed spirit that often comes with the changing weather, I wanted to take some time to share an important leadership update for the Sir Alexander Mackenzie school community. Earlier today, we sent out a message to our school families announcing that Mr. Cam Makovichuk will be transitioning to the Assistant Principal role at Wild Rose School in the fall of the 2025–26 school year.
While we are excited for this new chapter in Cam’s leadership journey, we also want to take a moment to express our deepest gratitude for everything he has brought to our SAM community. Cam leads with kindness in every interaction, and his thoughtful, gentle approach to supporting students, staff, and families has made a lasting impact on all of us. His genuine love of learning and teaching shines through in all he does, and his presence in our school has helped shape a culture rooted in compassion, reflection, and joy.
We have all learned so much from the privilege of working alongside Cam and having him as part of our SAMily. While we will miss him greatly, we are so proud of him and wish him nothing but the very best in his new role at Wild Rose.
Mr. Clayton Wowk - Assistant Principal at SAM (2025/26)
While it is difficult to announce that Mr. Makovichuk will not be with us next year, we are also truly excited to welcome Mr. Clayton Wowk as our Assistant Principal starting in the Fall.
Mr. Wowk brings with him a strong background in educational leadership, having served as both a Science Department Head and as the Coordinator of the IB Programme at Bellerose. Mr. Wowk is known for his commitment to inclusive, student-centered education, as well as his ability to build strong relationships with students, staff, and families. Mr. Wowk’s energy, experience, and genuine enthusiasm for learning and connection will be a wonderful complement to our SAM team.
Mr. Wowk shared with us:
- "I could not be more excited to join the Sir Alexander Mackenzie school community – or "SAMily" as I've heard it called – for next year as assistant principal. Since applying for and accepting the position, I have had countless people reach out to me. Everyone has spoken glowingly about the school's excellence, strong community, and the kindness of its staff and students; they all tell me how lucky I am to come to SAM. I am humbled and grateful for the opportunity to join the Sir Alexander Mackenzie community, and I can't wait to meet and work with all of you. "
Mr. Wowk is also a proud uncle to several young nieces and nephews, and, in his free time, he enjoys playing hockey (as a goalie!), cheering on the Oilers, learning to cross-country ski, and spending time with his family—including his cat, Charlene.
On behalf of the entire SAM community, I would like to extend are heartfelt welcome to Mr. Wowk!
Mrs. Lise Classen - Acting Assistant Principal (2024/25)
As we prepare for this transition, we are also pleased to share that Mrs. Lise Classen will continue to serve as our Acting Assistant Principal for the remainder of the current school year. We are incredibly grateful for her steady leadership, commitment to our students and staff, and the care she brings to everything she does at SAM.
Change can bring a mix of emotions, and while we’ll miss Mr. Makovichuk and wish him the very best in his next chapter, we are filled with gratitude for the team we have and the future we’re building together. Please join us in warmly welcoming Mr. Wowk to our SAM family, and in thanking Mrs. Classen for the outstanding leadership she continues to provide.
We wish you all a wonderful Spring Break!

Elderbeary Day
Elderbeary Day, celebrated annually on March 20, is a special occasion dedicated to honoring and appreciating the invaluable contributions of Elders within Indigenous communities. This day recognizes the vital role Elders play in imparting wisdom, preserving cultural traditions, and nurturing younger generations. Throughout SAM School on Elderbeary Day, our staff and students found meaningful ways to celebrate and express gratitude toward their Elders, including: inviting our beloved adults in to read and tell stories, visiting the residents at Chateau Mission Court, and writing letters of appreciation to adults who positively impact our lives.
By observing Elderbeary Day, communities come together to celebrate and acknowledge the enduring legacy and wisdom of their Elders, ensuring that their invaluable contributions are honored and remembered.
SAM Spirit Awards
Each month at our SAM Spirt Assembly we will recognize the incredible contributions of our students, staff, and volunteers who help make SAM an amazing school to come to every day. The SAM SPIRIT Award is a monthly themed award where teachers choose a few students from their class to recognize for demonstrating our SAM SPIRIT qualities. This month, we recognized our Donut Award Winners -- these students demonstrate qualities of perseverance and "donut" give up when things get tricky! Congratulations to our SAM Spirit Award Winners!
