Dear Families,
I’m flying over the Atlantic on my way to London as I write this. Norman has begun to make a strong recovery and I will be flying home with him at the end of next week. Phew! I will be out of school all of next week. Samantha will be the main point person as usual. Feel free to email me if something comes up. I will have time each day to check in and respond. Again, thanks for all your well wishes and offers of help.
January progress reports - Families will be receiving several important updates about your child’s progress to date:
Progress reports will be sent home in backpacks on today, January 31 for all students in grades K-5. In the next two weeks, you will also receive a brief call from your child’s teacher to clarify any questions about your child’s progress report. If you have more in-depth questions, the spring conference window opens in early March. At that meeting, you can speak to your child’s teacher in-person about their overall school experience and their academic and social emotional growth.
If your child is on an IEP, they will also receive an IEP progress report.
If your child is in grade K-3 and their recent screening results indicate a need for further support in reading, your teacher will share that information on their call, and you will also receive a letter that shares our plan for supporting your child.
Valentines Day - Today each student and staff member will draw the name of someone in the school to make a Surprise Valentine for. This has been a beloved tradition for many years, bringing us closer together and adding beauty and intrigue to the front hall bulletin board. The cards are handmade with care. Children will have time in art class and open art these next two weeks to make their Valentine or they can make them at home. They should not include candy or other purchased gifts/trinkets. The sooner they are done the longer we have to admire them before we exchange them on February 14
In addition to the exchange of Surprise Valentines on the 14th, each class will have cookies and strawberry milk at some point during the day. We ask that children not bring in cards, other than the one they make for their Surprise Valentine, and there is no need for extra treats to come in. We’ve got it covered!

Icing Containers Wanted!
In the 2-3 Classroom, we have been testing ideas for simple, inexpensive water bottle holders attached to student desks. (We often have quiet, focused work sessions interrupted with the Clunk-Clankety-Clank of metal water bottles falling onto the floor.)
After collecting ideas all summer and testing a few prototypes, we have a design that seems to work pretty well-- an old icing container attached to the desk with velcro. (Thank you, Erica Castle, for suggesting the velcro!)
Now we need more icing containers!
If you ice a cake, please save your icing containers for us!
The 2-3 class thanks you!

Trade Simulation in 2/3 grade
The 2nd-3rd graders are doing a trade simulation to understand why people from different environments trade resources. They are trying to gather ingredients from different parts of the world to make chocolate chip cookies, hummus, ice cream, pretzels, peanut butter, and yogurt.
