Our Kura News and Information
School Photos - Update
We are now waiting for the school photo proofs to be sent from the photographer. Once these arrive, they will be sent home with instructions about ordering.
We work hard to have a uniform of excellence. It presents our school well to the community.
There are pre-loved, very reasonably priced items here at school if you need any.
A reminder that black pants are meant to be non-branded.
Parent Helps - Welcome
As we move into a more normal school we would like to welcome back parent helpers. If you would like to help in some way, in your child's class, contact your child's classroom teacher.
It could be that you are able to help with such things as hearing children read, doing maths games with a group, putting away reading books, pasting items into Learning Partnership Books, helping make resources, marking some work to working with small groups.
A reminder, that to be in the classroom you will need to have an up-to-date police vet.
Our Team for this Week - Team Kahu
Kia ora koutou - hello to you all.
This term is going to be non-stop with school events and visitors helping us with our learning. We also have our amazing Senior Production to look forward to!
In Team Kahu we complete a range of learning activities in our class.
We have been learning about showing gratitude. To do this we have each got our own journals called “Awesome Ends in ME”. By completing this journal, we learn about the positives that surround us and we don’t focus as much on the negatives. This helps us develop growth mindsets and resilience.
One day a week we explore digital technology by trying different coding websites and activities in our “Hour of Code”. This is teaching us the importance of accuracy and it's lots of fun being able to play the games that we create.
A number of students go to Kapa Haka and work with Sharne on a Wednesday afternoon each week. They are working hard on their actions and kupu (words) before performing at Polyfest. It has been two years since we have been able to perform on the Polyfest stage and we are all looking forward to it. They are also looking forward to showing off our new school korowai (cloak) which will be worn by Iyland Roberts during their performance.
We are taking part in a new learning experience this term by completing a novel study. Each student has their own copy of the novel, The Wahine Disaster. As we learn about this major NZ maritime disaster, we complete shared reading and discussion, complete comprehension tasks and further develop our vocabulary.
This term students have been busy writing speeches on their choice of topic. They will be presenting these to the class next week in preparation for the LMV speech competition. Two Year Six students and two Year Five students will be chosen to represent the school in this competition. We are fortunate enough to be holding the event this year, so some students will be able to watch the speeches from other schools as well. We have some interesting topics this year from “Why We Need Our Mothers” to “The Problems With Being a Child”. I am looking forward to hearing the students present these.
For PE we are focusing on games from other cultures. So far, we have learnt two invasion games. The Maori game “Tapu Ae” and a variation of the Filipino game “Agawan Base”. The students are enjoying getting the chance to reflect on how the game works and collaboratively make adjustments to the rules to make the game easier or harder.
As you can see we are a very busy class with a lot of fantastic learning taking place. Come join us in Team Kahu if you want to find out more about what we are getting up to each day.

Character Values Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L): Term Three Excellence Tohungatanga
Excellence means we aim for a high standard and continuous improvement and is shown through reliability, consistency, flexibility, reflection, change, innovation, accuracy, completion, dedication, practice, effort and attitude.
Work hard, have a go and do our best.
Leave everything how we would want to find it.
Wear our uniform with pride.
Principal's Values Award
This week the Principal/Tumuaki would like to acknowledge Sasha Devery for showing our school values in class and at play.
Most Valuable Pupil: Team Kiwi
Team Kiwi’s MVP for Tohungatana Excellence is Penny Blackmore.
Penny is a very deserving recipient of MVP as she always strives to do her best. Penny starts the day with a cheerful greeting and does her morning jobs without needing to be reminded. As the school day progresses, Penny continues to do what is expected of her, to the best of her ability.
Penny always wears her uniform neatly. She also takes great care in the presentation of her school work. Penny completes her Home Partnership tasks weekly which helps her to be such a great learner!
Penny is kind to her teammates in Team Kiwi and is always willing to lend a hand to help someone out. She can be relied upon to carry out her class duty well and then looks to see what else she can do to help!
Penny, we are so lucky to have you in Team Kiwi. Keep being so wonderful. You are a star!
Most Valuable Pupil: Team Kereru
Team Kereru’s MVP for Tohungatanga Excellence is Amelia Hodge-Thomas.
Amelia has only joined Team Kereru this term and she has fitted in wonderfully. She comes to school with a positive attitude and puts her books and stationery away ready for the day.
Amelia strives to complete her work on time and will do extra catch up work to complete what she needs to. She is polite when others are talking and will join in with activities and discussions.
Amelia is kind and respectful to her peers and fits well into all groups. She will take feedback on board and will come back to check if what she has changed is right. She keeps her book work tidy and follows the expectations in the classroom.
Amelia shows excellence in and outside of the classroom. She will play fairly with her peers and lets other children from around the school join in if they ask.
It has been a great start to the term for Amelia and I am looking forward to seeing how she will progress in Team Kereru for the rest of the year.
Keep up the awesome work!
Writer of the Week - Lana Reid (Team Kahu)
I Washed Up On The Beach
One early Sunday morning, we set out to sea. The day was just dawning, and the sea waves were rolling. Our white, medium-sized boat calmly sailed through the rough and rocky sea. All of the family were chatting away on the front deck of the boat, discussing how fun our holiday in Hawaii would be!
Hours later the sun started going down and the sea started turning to an impenetrable darkness. Minutes later the boat was turning to the left and wouldn’t stop. A big thunderous storm had grown outside. The boat tipped and it started brimming with water. I thought this would be the last thing that I saw, just as my eyes flickered closed.
I woke up with sand in my mouth and in my eyes. As soon as my vision came back, I realised that I’d washed up on a deserted island. I looked around to see if there were any signs of life or family, but nothing was there apart from the sound of rustling trees as the wind whistled through them. I knew that if I didn’t get a move on, I would be cold and on the way to starvation. Luckily, I found two or three fruit trees.
That next day, I gathered a stack of logs and twigs to start a fire. I found some huge collapsed trees and decided to make a shelter like a tree-house so that I was off the forest floor.
By noon, I had the whole house completed by using wood, mud and leaves! I lived a happy life for decades, until a passing boat saw all the commotion on my island. Luckily, they came and rescued me and took me back to the mainland.
As a thank you gift, I gave a homemade flax basket filled with fresh mangoes and more!
Our Kaitiaki School Board
Term Three - Meeting Five Report
The School Board met on Tuesday 9th August. Here is a summary of the last formal meeting for this School Board.
- The Board toured Room 5 (Team Kereru) and Room 6 (Team Kahu) and received presentations from their teachers, Miss Sarah Botting and Miss Sanne den Boon.
- Solutions and Services provided us with the financial report for the month of July which places us into the second half of the school's fiscal year.
- The principal tabled his report in regards to the progress against the Annual Plan and Compliance Requirements.
- Mrs Jenny Coyle provided her Term Two Positive Behaviour for Learning report that gives a snapshot of children's behaviour for Term Two. It was pleasing to read how well the children do to get along with each other during what can be a cold and wintery term.
- Mrs Abby Duffy provided a report overviewing the work occurring to support multiple children across multiple classrooms relating to their various health, learning and behavioural needs.
- The Board confirmed the Junior Ice-Skating trip.
- Audit reports were received from the Audit Committee that helped keep the school systems and processes in alignment with legislation and good practice.
- Tender prices were received for the classroom modernisations. The lowest price was substantially over the allocated funding and so work will need to occur to adjust the project to bring it into alignment with the funding expectations.
- Principal appraisal is moving into what is known as a Professional Growth Cycle and information pertaining to this was tabled.
- Colours for paint, aluminium joinery, autex and carpet tiles have been selected for the administration block remodel meaning we are nearing the construction phase of this project. This, when it occurs, will see some disruption and noise to the administration block for a short span of time.
- Tenders for the boiler replacement have been let and we await a finalised scope of work and timeframe for this.
Thank you again to this School Board for their diligence and support over the past three years for the school which benefits the children and staff.
