UPCOMING EVENTS
SCHOOL COMMUNITY CALENDAR
Please check the PCPS community calendar for upcoming and future dates as the calendar is regularly updated https://www.padcath.wa.edu.au/community-calendar
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Pentecost Sunday
Last Sunday we celebrated Pentecost Sunday. The word Pentecost is Greek and it means "50th day." Fifty days after Easter Sunday, we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and their followers and the beginning of their earthly ministry to make disciples of all nations. The symbols of Pentecost are the flame, wind and the dove, which represents the Holy Spirit.
Sacrament of Confirmation
This weekend we ask that you keep the Year Six children in your prayers as they prepare to receive the sacrament of Confirmation at Our Lady of the Mission Church. The children had their retreat day today where they were able to spend time reflecting upon the sacrament they are about to receive. Many thanks to Ms Capriotti and Mr Darby for preparing the children so thoroughly in the lead up to Confirmation.
Family Mass
All PCPS families are specially invited to celebrate a special PCPS Family Mass at Our Lady of the Mission on Sunday, June 9 at 10.00am. At this Mass the families from Padbury CPS will be participating in all parts of the Mass along with the parish community. This is a special mass so we really would like all families to attend. We only have two of these masses per year so I ask all families to make a big effort to come along.
We are keen for parents as well as children to participate in the Mass. Some of the areas children and families can help in include - altar serving; reading; lighting candles; singing; guitar playing and greeters. Big thanks to Liz De Haas and Severine Gibson for co ordinating this special mass.
National Reconciliation Week
National Reconciliation Week occurs next week with the theme of Now More Than Ever. It is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
Keeping Safe
PCPS is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all students is our highest priority. We are committed to child safety, supporting a child safe culture and always keeping the best interests of the child first.
We are guided by the Catholic Education Western Australia Child Safe Framework which supports a child safe culture, healthy and respectful relationships and collective responsibility in our school community, based on the latest research and recognised best practices.
For further information please refer to the Child Safe Framework https://childsafe.cewa.edu.au
All of our classroom teachers from PK-6 teach from the Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum (KS:CPC). This curriculum is taught age appropriately every year by the classroom teacher who receives KS:CPC training. The teachers send home letters regarding when they are commencing their units and what will be taught. Through this curriculum the children learn they have a right to:
- be treated with respect and to be protected from harm
- be asked for their opinions about things that affect their lives and to be listened to
- feel and be safe in their interactions with adults and other children and young people
- understand as early as possible what is meant by 'feeling and being safe'
National Volunteer Week
This week we celebrate National Volunteer Week. I would like to take this opportunity to say thankyou all the many volunteers within our PCPS community who give so generously of their time in various volunteer roles in our beautiful school...ranging from Advisory Council, P&F Executive and Committee members, P&F portfolio holders, classroom reps, classroom helpers, excursion helpers, netball coaches and manager and the list goes on! the services that otherwise would not exist without volunteers. We really appreciate your help and couldn't run many events and activities with out you!
Dad's Night Out
Dad's Night Out and big Meat Cook Up is coming up on 12 June at Alex Junior. Many thanks to Nick Lynch for organising this special event for all of our PCPS dads.
Have a lovely weekend.

No Right Turn
Parents are encouraged to visit the school website to see our rules around pick up and drop off. https://www.padcath.wa.edu.au/kiss-and-ride
We have noticed lately that cars are trying to turn right into the school from O'Leary Rd.
There is no right turn from O’Leary Road into the school as this halts the efficient flow of traffic. Drivers are asked to drive down to the end of O’Leary Road, turn around at the cul-de-sac and then drive back up to turn left into the school through the gates.

National Simultaneous Storytime
On Wednesday 22 May the Year 5 students joined over 2 million children, teachers, parents and caregivers across Australia for the National Simultaneous Storytime.
Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country.
We listened to Bowerbird Blues by Aura Parker and then drew blue birds in class. It was a very special way to come together to celebrate literature.

Coding Club
Coding Club has commenced this term with coders from Years 4-6!
Our eager students are very excited each week to use CS First to begin their coding learning journey.
CS First is an easy-to-use computer science curriculum designed for students. CS First includes video content to teach kids coding basics with Scratch for CS First, a special version of the Scratch coding editor inside the CS First website.
Our young coders are enjoying learning to block code and share their knowledge and skills with other coders in the club.
We are looking forward to seeing what our coders can design, create and innovate in Coding Club this term.

Recycling
PCPS continues to recycle toothbrushes, bread tags, pens, soft plastics and mobile phones in our bid to promote sustainability.
Moving forward, we ask families to recycle their own batteries because at times, they leak and make a mess in our recycling bins.
Djooroobidiny (Go Along Happily)
We are all very excited that our biennial exhibit of whole school learning about the history and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people called Djooroobidiny (Go Along Happily), returns on the 27 June 2024 from 1:30pm.
Teachers and students have been very busy in class in preparation for the event. Save the date and watch this space for more information coming soon!

Extension
The Maths Olympiad was a challenging task and the student’s hard work and dedication, showcasing their problem-solving skills and strategies, was impressive. Our students were very engaged and came to an understanding that there are many ways to find solutions to problems. Focussing on strategies to apply and knowing that we can switch has now become a reality for our students.
Our Extension students are diligently planning for the upcoming ICT competition, identifying and clarifying information and ideas to devise solutions to problems faced globally. Their dedication and ingenuity is truly inspiring…from saving the bees, recycling, global warming, deforestation, pollution and even a language translator, our students never cease to amaze with their ingenuity.

Donation Appreciation
Donation Appreciation - Creating a significant impact....commending the generosity of our Community
Every donation is valuable, and each donor is invaluable - individuals, groups, and communities are helping to shape a brighter future for our school.
This year, one of our key objectives of the P&F is to back the creation of a Sensory Garden for the school. Throughout 2024, multiple fun-raising events and raffles will be organised to gather essential funds.
The Sensory Garden will be a thoughtfully crafted area aimed at engaging all five senses: sight, smell, sound, touch, and taste. Through the use of plants and various decorations like mirrors, water features, and textured tiles, the garden will provide an immersive experience, enabling children to connect with nature, heighten their awareness of the environment, unwind, relax, and foster imaginative thinking.
Our newly established Donations Sub Committee has engaged with local community figures and businesses and will continue to do so in the coming months. Appreciation for their generous support will be highlighted in our school newsletter for all the donors. Below are some businesses that have already contributed and who we would like to recognise this term -
- Bunnings
- Ienco Family and Pezano Enterprises for the generous Mother's Day Breakfast donation
Upcoming P&F Events for Term 2
- Father Son and Daughter Camp Out - 25th May (Nick Lynch)
- Interschool Cross Country Sausage Sizzle - 7th June (Susan Kadak)
- PCPS Family Mass - 9th June (Severine Gibson and Liz De Haas)
- Kids Disco - New date to be confirmed in Term 3
A huge thank you to Dan Sorgiovanni and his support team for the wonderful Mother’s Day event. The mums and mother figures really appreciated the morning.
We have a number of events that have been progressing behind the scenes, and we want to make special mention of the following:
- Ann Sargeant and her team of wonderful volunteers for their ongoing efforts and commitment to providing our kids with fabulous sausage sizzles each fortnight.
- Vicky Kay for her continued support with the School Photos.
- Severine Gibson and Liz De Haas for all their efforts in coordinating and organizing the PCPS family mass.
- Kate Shaw for her support in coordinating our lost property.
A very special callout to Mel Barrett, who has stepped back this term from coordinating the Scholastic Book orders. Mel has managed this program for several years, working behind the scenes to provide a wonderful service for our kids and the school. Over time, this program has purchased over 130 new books and book packs for the library, valued at $1,500. Moving forward, this program will be coordinated by Jess Chambers and Nicole Louise. Welcome to both of you, our newest members of the P&F.
Some key decisions from the recent P&F meeting:
- We have established an online P&F order account with Woolworths as well as a line of credit with key suppliers to better support our portfolio leads, both financially and logistically, when ordering for events.
- At our May meeting, we endorsed the 2024 School Wishlist, which includes requests for items such as literacy resources, maths resources, and music and drama equipment for the teachers/children and classrooms.
- In March 2024, the P&F approved the purchase of four new refrigerated water chillers which is funded by the P&F. These wall-mounted chillers will be retrofitted to our existing drinking troughs, with one unit allocated to each block: Kindy, Junior, Middle, and Senior. Installation is expected to take place over the upcoming school holidays. These units will ensure that our children have access to chilled water during hot weather.
