Dear Parents and Friends of our School Kia Ora/Hello/Kamusta
Kia ora koutou,
Over the last couple of weeks the tamariki have been learning about what to do if our school went into a lock down. Yesterday our bells starting ringing and we could not turn them off. This occured at morning tea time. All the children heard the bell ringing and decided it must be a lock down. They all made their way to the main block, which is where we assemble in a lock down. We were so proud of them, especially the children in Rooms 1, 2 and 3 who rememebred what to do. No one panicked and they all supported each other to be where they needed to be.
How else can you help your children to become better readers at home??
When kids can read fluently, it’s easier for them to understand what they’re reading. And they read aloud easily and with expression and this makes reading a lot more enjoyable.
Less fluent readers read more slowly and word by word. Their attention is focused on sounding out each word; so, they pay less attention to understanding what they’ve read.
Beginning readers aren’t fluent yet, but by the end of Year one, tamariki should be reading books at their level with ease and expression.
Here are four things you can do at home to help:
Choose the right books
Help your child choose books that they can comfortably read. As your child reads, count the number of words they cannot read per page. In general, there should be five words or fewer that give them trouble on each page. If a book contains several pages on which you count more than five words that they can’t read, consider reading that book to your child until their fluency and accuracy improves.
Listen everyday
Listen to your children read everyday. Be patient — new readers often read slowly! Offer help when your child gets stuck, and always give lots of praise and encouragement.
Read it again
Encourage your child to reread favorite books over and over again, and make it fun! Repeated reading improves children’s fluency and comprehension. It also provides an opportunity to practice reading with expression.
Read to your kids every day
Even though your child may be able to read on their own, continue to find time each day to read books to them that are just beyond their reading level. They will enjoy listening to more advanced stories, and will hear a great example of fluent reading. Our older tamariki still love having books read to them - YES at Year 7 & 8 too!
Please making reading a priority in your home, no matter what age your chidlren are. Regular reading at home does have a positive impact on childrens progress at school.

HAERENGA AKO HUI - LEARNING JOURNEY MEETINGS - PARENT/TEACHER/CHILD
Parents are encouraged to keep their children home on this day, if they can, and to bring them in for the interview. If you would like your child to stay at school for the day we will have a programme organised for them that will be run by Mrs Hancock, Mrs Waite, Mrs Eagar and the support staff. If you would like your child to come to school on this day for part of or the full day please email: office@toko.school.nz It is really important for our planning and organisation that you contact the office and let us know.
On the 20th of June families will be able to see the mid year Overall Teacher Judgements for reading, writing and mathematics along with a general comment. This information is then followed up with interviews on the 24th June. As well as the graphs and general comment, we will be sharing student achievement against our Learning Stars for the first time. The 5 Learning Stars will be shown with some drop down criteria under each star. Teachers have then made a judgment on whether your child displays the criteria by selecting either evident, sometimes evident, or not yet evident. If you have any questions please ask your child's teacher during Parent Interviews.
Interviews can be booked via our school HERO App and are open now. Please refer to our last newsletter for instructions.
Please remember that these interviews are for the child, whanau and teacher to attend. If you wish to meet with your child's teacher separately this must occur outside of the scheduled interview times.
CAN YOU HELP US OUT
Art Work
We are looking for a couple of people to put some school art work up on the buildings around the school now that most of the painting has been completed. The pieces are quite large so it would be a two person job. ( If you could bring your own drill as well that would be awesome :)
Kawakawa Plants
We would like some kawakawa leaves to make some products. If anyone has some plants could you please get in touch with Mrs Waite.
