HES Eagle Scout Project
This week Logan Schwan completed his Eagle Scout project at Hawthorne Elementary. Logan is a former Hawthorne Wildcub and currently a Junior at WHS. In between his busy course schedule, he committed to creating a Music Wall at Hawthorne. When discussing his Eagle Scout project Logan shared that he first developed his love of music at Hawthorne and wanted to bring music back to the Hawthorne community. As part of his project rationale, Logan shared that music is a vital part of early childhood development and allowing students access to percussion instruments as part of their outdoor play allows them to explore this mode of expression without reservation. As part of the project, Logan will be presenting his engineering and design process to our students. Thank you Logan for bringing music to our outdoor space at Hawthorne.
Second Graders Visit CES
Our second graders visited Columbus Elementary today to preview their new school. They were greeted by third grade friends who shared what it is like to be a STAR student at CES. Second grade parents are invited to attend the Incoming Third Grade Parent Orientation at CES on June 5th at 6:30 p.m.
Character Education with Ms. Westfall
On Wednesday our students learned about what it means to be resilient. Students learned about positive thinking and wearing, "sunny glasses" when faced with challenging situations. Our Mt. Pleasant Portrait of a Learner defines resilience as bouncing back and adapting when faced with challenges or when things feel hard.
STEM Wizardry
Hagerman the Science Wizard visited Hawthorne today. Students were amazed to learn about some of the cool science behind everyday things.
Second Grade Moving Up
We will host our Second Grade Moving Up Ceremony on June 21st at 9:30 a.m. on the playground field. If it is a rainy day we will host three ceremonies indoors in the gymnasium. We will update you as the date gets closer.
Indoor Ceremony Schedule:
8:45 Chiodi & Pirrotta, Schoener, Taylor
9:45 Bartucca, Boccio, Rush & Karnbad
10:45 Luzon, Biagiotti & Fennell
Additional parking will be available at Holy Rosary, and you will be able to enter Hawthorne through the side gate. We will be sending home four wristbands per family the week before the ceremony. Please have all adults wear their wristbands. Weather permitting, our PTA will host a party on the field for our second graders and their families immediately after the ceremony.
Reminders
Safety in Warmer Weather
We will continue to go outdoors for recess as long as temperatures and the heat index remain in the safe range. We will adhere to the NYS guidelines for outdoor activity, and modify our time outdoors as necessary. We will also use the air conditioned spaces in HES to provide students with a break on warmer days. Currently our cafeteria, library, and STEM Lab are all air conditioned. Please make sure that your child is dressed comfortably and has a water bottle on warmer days.
HES is Nut-Free
Hawthorne is a nut-free school. Please do not send your child to school with products containing peanuts, tree nuts, Sun Butter, Nutella or any other products containing nuts.
