High Impact "Standards - Based" Planning
What is High-Impact Planning?
High Impact planning involves:
- Create guiding questions that point to the essential knowledge, skills, and ideas to be learned;
- Identify what is to be assessed and how it will be assessed based on the rigor of the language used in the grade level content standard;
- Create a learning progression (learning map) identifying what is to be learned and specific building block skills that will need to be mastered in the progression of learning;
- integrate questions, checks for understanding, and formative assessments into every lesson so that the teacher can be sure that ALL students understand what they are learning and how well they are progressing in their learning.
High Impact Standards - Based Planning
How to Create Guiding Questions
- Address the grade level content standard.
- Identify the knowledge students need to learn.
- Identify the skills students need to learn.
- Choose meaningful or important topics.
- Use appropriate academic vocabulary and provide students opportunities to use the academic language in classroom discussions.
The most important part of creating guiding questions is that teachers have a deep understanding of the grade level standards and expectations for the content area being taught. Collaboratively unpacking standards across grade level teams and/or departments is critical in ensuring that our students are being provided a "Guaranteed and Viable" curriculum.
