HPE Rules for Life - Students of the Week
This week, we are excited to celebrate our Student of the Week honorees, who have been recognized for demonstrating exceptional Self-Direction in their learning and actions. These students have taken the initiative to set goals, manage their time wisely, and show responsibility for their own success. Whether it’s staying focused during lessons, completing tasks independently, or showing perseverance in the face of challenges, these students are shining examples of what it means to be self-directed learners.
We are so proud of their efforts and accomplishments! Keep up the great work, and remember, when you set your mind to it, there’s nothing you can’t achieve.
Please join us in congratulating the following students for their outstanding self-direction this week!

Nurse Notes
Regardless of the grade, accidents happen during the day: milk spilling at lunch, mud/wet conditions on the playground, toileting accidents, etc. Please pack an extra change of clothes in your child’s backpacks for these unexpected mishaps. If your child does need to borrow any clothes from the clinic, please launder and return to the clinic as soon as possible.
The clinic could use pants for both boys and girls. Any donation would be much appreciated.
Thank you!
Nurse Jenny
Dear HPE parents,
From time to time, a case of head lice is reported to the school throughout the year. Should a case of head lice be brought to the school’s attention, the school nurse will maintain confidentiality of the student’s identity and assist the staff and parents with educational material. While the odds of your son or daughter developing a case of head lice are relatively small, the following includes useful information on head lice and the signs and symptoms.
Head Lice Information
- Head Lice are small parasitic insects that can be found on the heads of people.
- Head lice feed on human blood several times a day and live close to the human scalp.
- Head lice and head lice nits are found on the scalp, around and behind the ears and near the neckline at the back of the head.
- Head lice cannot fly or jump; they can only crawl
- Head lice are spread by direct head‐to‐head contact
- Head lice are rarely spread by contact with clothing or personal items (such as combs, brushes, hats or coats)
- Head lice are not a sign of uncleanliness
- Head lice are not known to spread disease.
Signs and symptoms of head lice infestation
- Tickling feeling of something moving in the hair
- Itching, caused by an allergic reaction to the bites of the head louse
- Irritability and difficulty sleeping; head lice are most active in the dark
- Sores on the head caused by scratching
If your child exhibits signs and symptoms of head lice infestation, you should examine your
child’s head (especially behind the ears and at the nape of the neck) for crawling lice and nits. If crawling lice and/or nits have been found, all household members should be examined for head lice and/or nits every 3‐4 days. Persons with live (crawling) lice or nits within ¼ inch or less of the scalp should be treated.
For more information on head lice and treatment go to the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) web site at http://www.cdc.gov
Please be aware that we (HPE staff) do not disclose the name of the student, name of the teacher nor grade level to other families in order to provide student/family confidentiality. We do ask that if your child does have lice, please notify the school and those individuals/families that your child has been in close contact with.
Counselor's Corner
Dear HPE families,
As our children grow, they encounter various social challenges that help shape their ability to communicate, cooperate, and build friendships. If your child is struggling socially, here are some ways you can support them:
Encourage Open Conversations – Ask your child about their day and listen without judgment. Help them express their feelings and brainstorm positive ways to handle social situations.
Model Positive Social Skills – Show kindness, patience, and respect in your interactions with others. Children learn by example!
Practice Social Scenarios – Role-play common social situations, such as joining a group, handling disagreements, or responding to teasing. This helps build confidence.
Help Them Find Common Interests – Encourage your child to participate in clubs, sports, or activities where they can meet peers with similar interests.
Review Conflict Resolution – Remind students how to manage conflicts by using “I” statements, listening to others, and seeking compromise.
Social skills take time to develop, and with encouragement and practice, your child will continue to grow. Thank you for being an essential part of their journey!
Have a great weekend!

Social and Emotional Learning
KINDERGARTEN
Summary: In this week’s lesson, your child will learn that taking time to feel calm before reacting is a helpful first step to solving a problem.
Try This at Home: Let your child see you taking a moment to feel calm at home when things are busy or stressful. For example, say, “Today was a really busy day. I’m going to take a few slow breaths to help me feel calm.” Invite your child to join you.
1st GRADE
Summary: In this week’s lesson, your child will learn helpful ways to respond to a problem caused by accident. They’ll practice phrases for apologizing: "I’m sorry. It was an accident. Are you okay? How can I help?"
Try This at Home: When accidents occur at home, take time to apologize and encourage your child to do the same, using the new phrases they learned at school this week.
2nd GRADE
Summary: In this week’s lesson, your child will use empathy to come up with a kind act they could do for a person they choose.
Try This at Home: Ask your child who they chose to have empathy for and what kind act they decided to do.
3rd GRADE
Summary: In this week’s lesson, your child will learn a new process for solving problems called STEP.
Try This at Home: Ask your child if they can recall what each letter in STEP stands for. (S: Say the problem, T: Think of solutions, E: Explore the outcomes, P: Pick a solution.)
4th GRADE
Summary: In this week’s lesson, your child practiced rethinking a variety of situations in order to help them feel better.
Try This at Home: Ask your child to give you an example of how to use rethinking when feeling disappointed about not doing their best on a task or activity.

Transportation Change During the Day
Occasionally, parents must make unplanned transportation changes during the school day. All telephone calls must be received by 12:00 pm. This is to allow enough time to accurately deliver messages to teachers, as well as time to confirm the change if necessary. Please do not call the school after 12:00 pm to make a transportation change except in the case of extreme emergencies.
Just a reminder, we will not have lunch visitors the week before or after spring break. Our last date for lunch visitors is April 30. Thanks!
