May Newsletter
May 1, 2023
Greetings Rider Families:
It looks as though we may finally be moving into warmer weather as we enter the month of May. It is hard to believe we are down to 23 days of school remaining for the year. We are extremely proud of the effort being put forth by the students and staff of Red River High School as we move to close out another year. Thank you also to all of you as parents for your support throughout the year.
Each year there is talk of a Senior Skip Day. There is NOT a school approved skip day. The consequence for truancy is detention, and in some cases, could lead to loss of credit. In addition, students who do not attend school will be unable to participate in any extracurricular activities that day..

Students Travel Abroad
About a year ago I signed up for a school trip to Costa Rica and after numerous meetings where we learned about the culture and practiced our Spanish we finally flew there on March 12 2023, 23 returning on March 22. The first half of the trip was spent with a host family, people generous enough to open up their houses to a bunch of strangers. While staying with the host families we would eat breakfast with them before walking to the meeting place which was about a mile away from where I was staying. Each day the bus would take us to a local park, Parque Libertad, where people could go to hang out and go for walks. We were tasked with building a garden next to one of the paths. So everyday when we got out to the park some people would gather dirt while others would use pickaxes and shovels to chip away at an already existing hill that was in the way and filled with rocks. Then after several hours of helping make a hill we would all climb back on the bus and go to whatever else we were doing that day. Each day brought a different extra activity, one day we went to an art museum, another we visited a small zoo. Then each night we would return to the host family’s house and eat dinner with them before going to sleep.
After the homestay was over we drove several hours to the nearby volcano. After checking out the volcano we went to the nearby hot springs where we spent the rest of the afternoon and evening. Afterwards we went to the first hotel which we only stayed at for one night. In the morning we set off towards the second hotel, where we would stay for two nights. After dropping our stuff off at the hotel we went to the beach for the afternoon. We swam for a few hours before heading back to the hotel for dinner. The next day was one of the best. In the morning we went snorkeling by a nearby island, then we returned to the beach and had the option to go parasailing. The next morning we traveled to the final hotel where we would also stay for two nights. On the way to the hotel we stopped somewhere and were guided through the process of building and painting a small wooden cart which we could keep as a souvenir. We also were able to have our lunch filled with entertainment of local dances and songs. We even participated in the dancing. When we got to the hotel that night we dropped off our stuff and went up the mountain nearby to a nice restaurant for dinner. The next morning we went to visit a Costa Rican school where we would spend the morning. While there we were given a tour and even got to eat lunch with them. That night we slept for the last time in Costa Rica. The next morning we got up early and headed to the airport. Looking back I believe this will be a trip I remember for my whole life, and I’m sure that the other people who went on this trip will agree.

Parents Lead
Listening is a powerful parenting tool.
You may not always know what to say but by listening carefully, with interest, and with empathy, you send the message that you care, are emotionally available, understand and accept. Kids sometimes feel that their parents “don’t understand” or “don’t listen” which can lead to a feeling of disconnection from parents. Good listening involves reflecting back or paraphrasing what your child has said so they know that you fully heard. Responses like, “It sounds like you are pretty angry at your coach” or “From what you are saying, it sounds like you feel she isn’t being a very good friend to you. Is that right?”
