A few words from Mr. Jelks...
Dear LIS Families,
Our Track and Field meet is just around the corner! As students prepare for this exciting day, please help them come ready by ensuring they have:
-
Comfortable clothing and running shoes
-
A water bottle to stay hydrated
-
A warm jacket and sweatpants to wear when not participating, as there is no indoor space available during the event.
Also, if you haven’t already, please take a few minutes to complete the Student Learning Survey. Your voice matters to us and helps shape our school’s direction!
Lastly, the LIS PAC is looking for at least 5 volunteers to support the concession stand during the meet. If you're available to lend a hand, we would greatly appreciate your help!
Thank you for your continued support,
We are Kind....
We are Compassionate...
We are LIS...
Huy'ch'qa,
Dionte Jelks

BC Lions' "Team Up to End Racism" Presentation Inspires Youth in Ladysmith
The BC Lions are making powerful strides in promoting diversity and inclusion through their “Team Up to End Racism” initiative—a province-wide program that brings conversations about equity, respect, and anti-racism directly to students. On a recent visit to Ladysmith Secondary School (LSS), Lions players delivered this impactful presentation to a combined audience of Grade 8 students from LSS and Grade 6 and 7 students from Ladysmith Intermediate School (LIS).
Linebacker Boseko Lokombo and defensive back Patrice René—two proud members of the BC Lions—led the session with powerful personal stories and a strong call to action for students to stand up against discrimination. Lokombo, a BC native, and René, originally from Haiti and raised in Ottawa, both offered real-life insights into the importance of resilience, allyship, and community.
The 60-minute presentation, part of a larger initiative supported by the Province of British Columbia, Beedie, RBC, and Pacific Blue Cross, provides students with tools and language to recognize racism and take steps to challenge it. Focused on dialogue and empowerment, the session encouraged Ladysmith students to reflect on their role in building safe and inclusive spaces within their schools and beyond.
“Team Up to End Racism” is built on four pillars: school-based education, engagement through player ambassadors, accessible learning resources, and broad public awareness. Through their presence in communities like Ladysmith, the BC Lions are reinforcing the message that everyone—no matter their age—can be part of creating lasting, meaningful change.

Student Learning Survey 2024/2025
The Provincial Student Learning Survey gathers feedback from parents/guardians, teachers, and students on school environment, safety, and achievement. This information helps with school planning and provides valuable insights at the district and provincial levels.
In early 2025, students in grades 4 & 7, their families, and all school staff will be invited to complete the survey. We encourage parent participation, as it helps identify strengths and areas for improvement. The survey includes standard questions and may also feature local questions related to our school's specific needs.
The survey can be completed online at https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/education-training/k-12/support/student-learning-survey. It is accessible on any computer or mobile device. After logging in, click the Parents icon and select your school district and school.
The survey will be open until May 2, 2025. For any questions, please contact the school at 250-245-3351

Please follow up with a note to your child’s teacher when your child returns to school so the teacher can address any missed work, homework issues, etc. Also a reminder that if students need to leave early, they should be signed out in the main office.
School Closure
The following is a reminder about the NLPS school closure procedure for students.
If schools are closed due to snow, or any other weather-related problems, announcements will be made on local radio stations (WOLF 106.9 FM, WAVE 102.3 FM, and 91.7 COAST FM) by 7 a.m., or earlier, on the day of the closure. Please do not call the radio station – tune in and listen for the announcements, which will be made on a regular basis.
In addition, the district will post the information on the district’s website, Twitter, Facebook, and mobile app. Families may also receive a message through the School Messenger notification system via phone, email, or text. Please keep in mind, however, that there may be situations where this is not always possible, for example, power outages or technical problems. The most reliable method is to listen to the local radio stations.
