Welcome May! The month where we celebrate our Grade 12’s on May 10, 2024 at their Farewell. This year, we have sixty grade 12 students who are soon to receive their high school diplomas after writing their June diploma exams. You have exhibited kindness, compassion, and empathy towards your peers and the community. These attributes will serve you well beyond your academic years and contribute to making the world a better place. As you embark on the next chapter of your life, you have the support of your parents, the Tofield School staff, and the Tofield community. We have shared your journey and will continue to do so as you pursue your dreams and aspirations. Remember that you are all unique individuals with valuable talents and passions that can make a significant difference in the world. We believe in you and know you have what it takes to create a brighter future for yourself and others. Congratulations on this significant achievement, and we wish you all the best in your future endeavors.
May is always the month we start having our students pre-register their courses (grades 9-11) and complementary courses (grades 6-7). We appreciate all the feedback from students, parents, and staff. Once we receive our staffing numbers, we will send home course selection forms. In this newsletter, our career counsellor, Carla Praticante, provides course selection information to help students and parents make informed decisions. If you would like a further conversation with Carla, your child can access the High School+ Google Classroom, where an in-person meeting or Google Meet can be scheduled.
Our playground has come to the end of its life. The Friends of Tofield School Society (parent society) is looking for volunteers to help with the planning, fundraising, grant writing, design selection, reviewing quotes and finding donations for the new playground. Please lend a helping hand by contacting chairperson, Lisa Takats-Priestley @ lisa@strixeco.ca. Many hands make light work.
Mr. Kaden Doerksen has been nominated for the beginning teachers’ Edwin Parr Award and was successfully selected for Battle River School Division. His nomination moves forward to the Zone 4 level on May 27, 2024 in Innisfail. If Mr. Doerksen is the successful candidate at that event, he will move on to the Provincial level this coming fall. We are very proud of Mr. Doerksen and wish him all the best in his nomination.
Alberta Education provides all school councils with a five hundred grant to promote school councils. Tofield School Council will be having Kiley Sutter Youth Motivational Speaker on Thursday, May 30 for parents in Tofield at 6:30 pm to present her mental health journey. See the information below.

April Scrapbook
Fur Trade
In Social Studies we were learning about the fur trade in Canada and its importance to our history.
This was an individual project that students were given three weeks to complete their fur trade research project. During class time they were required to research a fur trading post in Canada including, where it was located, who founded it and in what year, what buildings would have been at a post, jobs within the fort, furs that were traded, what they traded for, roles of women and roles of the Indigenous people. The research slides and map were completed at school and the model was expected to be done at home.
This project taught students not only about the fur trade and important role in Canadian history but also research skills, including finding reliable sources, how to site sources and using specific wording in your search to find what you need.
