Read Across America Reading Challenge
Be on the lookout for your child's Read Across America book bag and challenge "suitcase" on Friday, February 28. Please help your child remember to return both items to school each day.
* The challenge will run from March 1 - March 28.
* Each Green Meadow student will create a "suitcase" with a map of the United States where they can log in their reading over two weeks by coloring in a state for every 10 minutes they read or are read to.
* Students will receive a 2 gallon zipper-sealed bag and will be invited to borrow books from classroom libraries, as well as check books out from our school library.
* The bags should return to school each day so that books can be exchanged and students can share their progress as they 'travel' across the country.
* All students who return their "suitcase" to school completed on March 28, will be entered into a raffle to win gift cards to our school book fair in May. We will accept suitcases until Wednesday, April 2.
* The raffle drawing will be held Friday, April 4, and the winners will be announced.
* Our All School Pajama Party has been moved to Friday, April 4, because March 28 is a half day.
Supporting Home/School Connections in Math
Thank you for your interest in fostering strong mathematicians. Math is a fundamental skill that influences many aspects of daily living and many education and career options. Research has shown that more than anything….our mindset regarding math has a significant impact on students’ experiences with math. When families have a positive attitude about math, children are more engaged in problem solving and curious about numbers.
This article will be the first in a series supporting home/school connections in math. We are sharing excerpts from a recent blog post from NWEA.
Parent strategies for improving their child’s math (excerpt)
Parent strategies for improving their child's math
General Math improvement strategies-for home
Provide activities that enrich and relate mathematics to daily life:
Talk about how many bowls to put out for dinner
Fold napkins in different shapes, triangles, rectangles, halves, etc.
Have your child count similar items as you put away groceries
Have your child help measure ingredients for recipes
Give your child change (coins) to count out to pay for small purchases at the store
Ask your child to compare prices of items by asking things like, “Which can of beans costs more?
Allow your child to weigh fresh produce; have older children calculate the price
Read the days and dates on a calendar. Talk about the number of days in the month. Count or calculate the number of days until a special event.
Draw a scale map of your home and determine the best escape route in case of an emergency.
Make maps to find treasure hidden in a room or outdoors
Music Update
Music these past few weeks has looked a little different, but is still going strong! Although we are not in the music classroom, there are many activities we have been working on in our classrooms.
PreK and Kindergarten: Students have been working on a “Carnival of the Animals” unit, where we listen to a different song from “Carnival of the Animals” each week, and then move our bodies to the music. We talk about the characteristics of the song, for example, the song about a turtle is very slow, so we move our bodies like slow turtles. We are up to 5 different animals, with students being able to name the animal when they hear the song.
We also explored some fun instruments and our love for pizza this month while reading “Pete the Cat and the Perfect Pizza Party.” We added a pizza song and instruments with each pizza topping on Pete’s pizza!
First, and Second Grade: In the month of January, first, second and third graders became secret spies. They joined “Secret Spy Academy”, through which they worked on the secret spy “password”, secret spy “poses”, secret spy “listening”, and secret spy “handshake.” These activities focused on learning solfege syllables, movement, instrument identification, and partner dances. After completing “Secret Spy Academy,” students started on their first secret spy mission, which involved rescuing and unlocking a treasure box. We utilized xylophone composition and singing voices to go through the mission, and were about to unlock the treasure box when a mystery person snuck into our school and “stole” the treasure box. We watched a “security camera” track the mystery person who took the treasure box, and listened to their list of demands, which we will need to complete in order to get the treasure box back. This will be completed in February, and involves adding our own music composition to the “security camera” video, and reinforcing other musical concepts that were highlighted earlier. If you are curious about the “security camera” video, please see the attached youtube link. This video has no music, but once our spies add music, a new link will be sent out with the final copy! Here is the link: https://youtu.be/rBNyYWMD1HE
Third Grade: In the month of January, third grade students began learning how to play recorder. This started with learning how to read music notes on a staff, followed by proper hand and breathing techniques. Each student gets a personal recorder that is kept at school, and will get taken home at the end of the unit. We just learned how to play “Hot Cross Buns”, and will learn how to play “Mary Had a Little Lamb” before February break.
This past week was also the first rehearsal for the third grade honors chorus! We had almost 50 students participate, and we are looking forward to our performance at Maynard High School on March 27th.

Health Screenings
Dear Families,
We are writing to inform you that, in accordance with state requirements, we will be conducting health screenings for students in the coming days. These screenings are an essential part of promoting pediatric health and ensuring that all students are ready to learn and thrive in the school environment.
Pediatric health screenings help identify potential concerns such as vision, hearing, or other developmental issues that may impact a child’s ability to succeed in school. Early detection allows for timely intervention, which can make a significant difference in a child’s overall health and academic performance.
Please note that any student who has been opted out of the screening process by their parent or guardian will not be screened.
If you have any questions or would like more information about the screenings, please don't hesitate to contact us.
Thank you for your attention and partnership in supporting the health and well-being of our students.
Sincerely,
Nurse Ria and Nurse Rozie

Maynard High School Presents...
GET YOUR TIX EARLY! MHS Presents Dirty Rotten Scoundrels March 7-9
This is an especially exciting moment because in March 2020, the show was previously shut down TWO days before opening night. Based on the popular 1988 film, DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS centers on two con men living on the French Riviera, one suave and sophisticated who talks rich ladies out of their money, and the other a small-time crook who fabricates stories about his grandmother's failing health. After unsuccessfully attempting to work together, they agree on a settlement: the first one to extract $50,000 from a young heiress wins and the other must leave town. A hilarious battle of cons ensues, that will keep audiences laughing, humming and guessing to the end! PLEASE NOTE: Rated PG-13 for adult language and innuendo
