MCAS Communicator
an e-newsletter for the staff of Michigan City Area Schools
NOVEMBER 2020
Please post for/share with those employees who do not check email.
Car Wash Moves Online (and other United Way News!)
This year, the MCAS employee giving campaign will run ONE WEEK ONLY (November 16-20). More details will be coming your way that week -- you can give either online or using a paper form for payroll deduction.
Each year, the United Way provides funding for our Safe Harbor program, for the Open Door Health Center at Michigan City High School, for Kindergarten Countdown - and for many organizations that support our students and their families. We hope everyone will plan to support us as we unite to support the United Way!
Food Service - Hybrid Schedule Update
Starting on Friday (11/6), Food Service is partnering with Transportation to provide meals for students who are not at schools due to the hybrid schedule.
Students who ride the bus will receive meals at their regular bus stop, at their regular morning pick up time. No advance ordering required.
Students who walk to school or are dropped off by parents will receive meals at their schools. MCHS/KMS/BMS - pickup is 7:00-7:30am. Elementary - pickup is 8:00-8:30 a.m. No advance ordering required. Pickups will be ‘drive-through’ at all locations except Marsh, where food will be distributed from a school bus parked outside (Oak Street). Families with more than one child can pick up from the school where their oldest child attends.
Students in the MCAS Online and MC Virtual Academy will pick up their weekly supply of meals as they have previously done (at MCHS or Krueger on Mondays, 12:30-1:30pm). These meals must be pre-ordered by NOON each Wednesday.
Students attending AK Smith or Learning Center Programs when they are in session will eat at school.
NOTE: Students do not need to be present at pick up; meals can be picked up by an adult on behalf of the child.
Calls/emails/flyers and social media posts will be going out about all of the above beginning later today!
Supervised Learning Centers to Resume During Hybrid Schedule
Safe Harbor and the Boys and Girls Club will be offering Supervised Learning Centers during hybrid operations, starting on Friday, 11/6.
Safe Harbor will operate its Learning Center at Joy. SH will first offer services to their previously enrolled Learning Center students. If any of those students do not need the service, they will pull students up from their waitlist. Safe Harbor’s Learning Center Registration form is available to anyone who would like to be added to the waitlist at www.educatemc.net/safeharbor. Families can email amay@educatemc.net or bjohnstone@educatemc.net with questions.
Boys and Girls Club will be operating Learning Centers at Westcott (Elston) and Pine. At Westcott, BGC will serve only those students currently enrolled in Westcott after-school programming. If they are able to increase capacity based on staffing, they will reach out to families who were enrolled at the Westcott daytime learning center but are NOT currently enrolled in afterschool programming. At Pine, BGC will start with the students currently enrolled for Pine/Springfield after-school programming. After that, they will reach out to families who were enrolled at the Pine/Springfield daytime learning centers but are NOT currently enrolled in afterschool programming. If there is any additional space, they will go to their existing waitlists. They are not accepting new families for their waitlists. Note: while MCAS is hybrid, Westcott will remain open until 6:00pm M-F for traditional afterschool Club activities. Pine may be open daily until 6:00 as well (pending staffing) but will definitely be open T-R til 6. Springfield will continue to operate on T-R only til 6:00pm. Questions? Contact Michelle Shirk, mshirk@bgclubmc.org

LCSO Children's Concert Is Virtual!
The Laporte County Symphony Orchestra’s annual children’s educational concert has introduced the symphony to over 6,000 children each year at the LaPorte Civic Auditorium. Due to COVID, they have gone virtual! Composer/Conductor Rick DeJong and the LCSO believe that music should be a part of every child’s education and they are proud to bring this free resource to MCAS. Here’s the link to the concert and educator guide.
