2016 Missouri School of Character
It is with GREAT enthusiasm that we announce, Character.org has recognized Lincoln Elementary School as a school that has demonstrated its use of character development to drive positive impacts in academics, student behavior, and our school’s climate. We are proud to be named a 2016 Missouri School of Character!
For more information or to read the official Press Release, please use the link below:
Encouragement is the district wide character trait for the month of March. Encouragement is defined to students as “I use positive words and actions to motivate others and myself to not give up when faced with challenges or obstacles.”
Encouragement versus Praise: Here are just a few thoughts from Bright Horizons Family Solutions…
As an alternative to praising a child's end result or the child themselves, we should offer encouragement for their efforts and attitudes. Encouragement can be inspirational and motivating - a gentle, supportive nudge that helps children meet important goals - instead of self-defining and limiting.
Here are a few concrete examples of praise versus encouragement:
Generic or Person-Centered Praise
Encouragement or Genuine Praise
You are always so beautiful.
I like the combination of patterns you chose to wear today.
Good job!
You really stuck with that - your hard work paid off.
What a smart kid you are!
I can tell you're working hard on reading because you finished a longer book.
What a pretty picture.
The colors you chose for that sunset are unique.
You sure are strong.
That was the first time you've jumped rope without stumbling.
You are so organized.
I appreciate the way you organized the shelf, it makes it easier to find everything.
I am so proud of you.
You look proud of yourself! You really proved you can do it.
Sure - encouragement may not roll off the tongue as easily, but it is worth the effort. Here are a few additional benefits to encouraging children rather than praising them.
Encouragement:
- Recognizes and fosters continual growth and effort.
- Does not cause children to compare their achievements, or compete about who is smarter, prettier, faster, etc.
- Fosters independence - children gain a sense that their own abilities can get them what they need and want.
- Emphasizes effort, progress, and improvement rather than just results.
- Recognizes contribution rather than completion or quality over quantity.
- Promotes perseverance rather than giving up if a child doesn't initially achieve the success he expected.
- Allows children to learn about, rather than measure, themselves.
- Prepares children for real-world challenges where they will be expected to do much more than show up to earn recognition.
- Doesn't build false self-esteem (i.e. "I am so smart. I can do anything") but instead builds determination and confidence (i.e. "I have the ability to do many things if I work hard").
- Does not do for children what they can do for themselves.

NEW VOLUNTEER & VISITOR INFORMATION
Starting January 1, 2016, all background checks must be COMPLETED for volunteer opportunities by the first of the month before the event/opportunity. Background checks are completed every school year by volunteers in the schools. This change does NOT require you to have multiple background checks in the same school year. If you have already completed a background check for 2015-16 and have been approved, you can volunteer for the remaining school year.
Volunteers and Visitors are two different types of guests in our schools.
Volunteers are defined as any individual that will be assisting staff and/or students in the school setting. Examples include assisting with or attending a classroom party, a class field trip or supervising students without a staff member present. Volunteers must have a paid background check.
Volunteer background checks must be completed at the 1st of the month prior to the experience that prompted the check. (I.E.: a trip that will occur on October 22nd must have forms submitted and ran no later than October 1st).
Visitors are also welcome and encouraged. At times, visitors are invited guests such as grandparents or veterans. Visitors to our schools do not need a paid background check although you can encourage frequent visitors to do so. A visitor is defined as any individual who will be in an assembly area such as an auditorium or gymnasium for the purpose of a play, assembly, etc.
All visitors must present a photo identification to front office staff AND be listed as a point of contact for the student they are visiting. **If the person is not listed, the parent must give their permission for the visit.
Visitors are also allowed in the cafeteria to eat lunch with their child. All visitors are required to report to the office, present photo identification and sign in when entering the building. All visitors must be supervised by a camera or a staff member.
In accordance with Missouri State law, persons listed on the sex offender registry may not be present in any school building, on district property, in any district vehicle utilized to transport students, or be present at school activities at any time.

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION
Kindergarten registration for the 2016-2017 school year will be held March 8 and 9 (with the 10th as an inclement weather make-up day if needed) in the Powell Conference Room, which is located in the lower level of the Central Office building at 951 W. College Street in Troy. Students must be five years of age by July 31, 2016, to register for kindergarten. Registration hours are 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on both days. To register your child, you will need to bring the following:
child’s birth certificate
immunization record
two current (within 30 days) forms of proof of residency (i.e. lease, rental or purchase contract, utility bill, medical bill, deposit receipt, payroll check stub, driver’s license/state ID, voter ID card, bank statement)
Court documents, if applicable (proof of guardianship, divorce decree, DFS placement papers, foster care, etc.).
It is not necessary to bring your child with you at the time of registration. If you have any questions, you may contact the Registrar’s Office at 636.462.4930 x50401.
What can you do to support your child's good attendance?
- Set a regular bedtime and morning routine
- Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before
- Arrive at the bus stop 5 minutes early
- Don't let your child stay home unless he/she is truly sick. Keep in minds complaints of stomach ache and headache can be signs of anxiety and not a reason to stay home.
- If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to the teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make him/her comfortable and excited about learning.
- Develop a back up plan for arriving at school if something comes up. Call on family member, neighbor, or friend to help.
- Avoid medical appointments and extended trips when school is in session.
Why does attendance even matter?
- Starting in kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
- Missing 10% can make it harder to learn to read.
- Students can still fall behind if they miss just a day or two every few weeks.
- Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
- Absences can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help catch children up.
