Hillcrest Referendum Frequently Asked Questions
On September 25, the community came together for a forum on the "New" Hillcrest building. During the presentation we agreed to create a document that answers questions that we received at the forum and in other communications. Please use the link below to review the FAQ Document. This document provides quite a bit of information about the project and the upcoming referendum.
Fall Events
Classroom activities related to Fall and or Halloween will take place on November 1st. This includes our Kindergarten and Grade One parade. Parents attending the parade must check in with identification at the front entrance.
Fifth Grade Scientists
By using flashlights as a light source, 5th graders figured out that the brightness of a star is determined by its distance from Earth. Students also went outside to perform a lab. The Sun appeared to move across the sky from east to west and this resulted in changes in length and direction of shadows throughout the day. They observed that the Sun is low in the sky in the morning and afternoon so there is a longer shadow and at noon the Sun is high in the sky and shadow is short. They observed that in the morning, the Sun was SE and the shadow was NW (the opposite direction). Students are learning that the Earth’s rotation on its axis is what makes the sun appear to move in the sky, creating the pattern of daytime and nighttime, and causing apparent changes in other stars’ positions in the sky. 5th graders will travel to Hillcrest Planetarium next week to learn even more about stars.
A Message from our Math Consultants
The Frenchtown mathematicians have been hard at work! Kindergarteners have been learning all about numbers to 10 and learning to count with precisions using “Counting Collections". First graders are learning how to use efficient strategies to add and subtract single-digit numbers. Second graders have been learning to bundle ones, tens, and hundreds through one thousand. They have also been learning to use efficient counting strategies with “Counting Collections". Third graders developed their understanding of multiplication and division using units of 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10. The fourth graders have moved into learning about place value with multiplication and division. Fifth graders are learning about adding and subtracting fractions.
Kindergarten and first grade teachers are using the math resource, Bridges In Mathematics. Click the link for more information. https://www.mathlearningcenter.org/families/bridges2
Second, third, fourth, and fifth grade teachers are using Eureka Math Squared. Click the link for more information and to access tips and an overview of commonly used strategies in our Eureka Math Squared program.
