Week 11
Honors & High Honors Recognition!
Our crew consists of 23 students from the 6th and 7th grades. Last week DMS published the High Honors and Honors lists for Term 2. We would like to recognize our crew members for achieving this academic honor. There were 11 members who achieved High Honors and 9 who achieved Honors. Congratulations!
Hull and Keel team
Members began the difficult task of sanding the hull. Everyone wore their safety goggle and masks to protect them from the dust. They sanded down the shiny, white gel coating to a dull finish. The guys took a break to allow the Tech team to drill a hole for the water temperature monitor they will be attaching. Masks and safety goggles were worn throughout the sanding/cleanup process.
Getting our boat in and out of the display case and elevator is a delicate job.
Thanks Jayce for taking the lead. 💪🏼
Sail Team
The team made decisions on how to design our sail. They've made plans to include portions of four designs onto our sail. A HUGE THANK YOU to every 1st and 4 grade student that spent time thinking and creating their sails! We loved looking through all your designs!

Media Team
The members continued to document the progress each team made. They are responsible for capturing the video below of the water temperature sensor hole bring drilled through the boat.
Tech Team
Stressful day for this team. Lucas measured the hull and marked it for the water temperature monitor placement. The hole was drilled and a lot of work was done to get the temperature monitor wire through the hole, into the cargo
Deck Team
Kolby made more decisions on color choices. The entire crew decided they would like to add their names to the edge of the deck. Hull and Keel will need to prep that part of the boat, and remember to tape it off to not add the antifouling paint to that spot.
Launch Team
Ayla and the team made final adjustments on our launch letter and sent it out. Now they wait for a response and can jump in to assist any other teams that need some help.
Cargo Team
Sailing Through MCAS Social
Wednesday April 3
Our Social was successful with approximately 80 5th and 6th graders staying afterschool on Wednesday. Our crew members worked to set up the concession table, sell concessions and clean up the after the event was over. Shout out to Coop, who asked a friend of his to make us bracelets to sell. His friend came through, making us 90 bracelets! Any crew member who had some time this week wrote thank you letters to any staff/faculty member who came to help chaperone.
Vocabulary of the week
ANTIFOULING PAINT: a type of paint applied to the hull of a ship to prevent marine species and organisms from attaching to the surfaces of vessels that contact water
CONCESSIONS: candy and snacks sold at the social
DEPLOYER: people launching a miniboat
PAINTERS TAPE: used to create crisp paint lines, the adhesive isn't as strong or sticky as regular masking tape, so it peels off residue- free
THANK YOU LETTERS: express gratitude to an individual or organization
