Meet the Principal Potomack Welcomes Dr. Jessica Alfonso

About Dr. Alfonso

Newly Board approved Principal, Dr. Jessica Alfonso, Ed.D. is a native of Martinsburg and product of the Berkeley County School District. As a student, she was a Rosemont Rocket, South Middle School Trojan, and Martinsburg Bulldog. After graduating high school, she attended Shepherd University where she received a double degree in Political Science and Sociology. Upon graduation she received experience as a paid research intern for the United States Sentencing Commission in the Thurgood Marshall Federal Judiciary Building in Washington, D.C. then came back to Martinsburg as a Child Support Specialist for the Department of Health and Human Resources. Her career in education started as a permanent substitute at Martinsburg South Middle School teaching students with specific learning disabilities. She entered into the West Virginia University graduate program for a Master's in Multicategorical Special Education with an endorsement in English and Autism. She then served as a certified special education teacher for students with specific learning disabilities in math and reading and as a certified teacher for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. In 2010, she entered into a Doctorate program at Shenandoah University with an emphasis in Administrative Leadership whereby she sought to expand the area union membership by examining teachers' perceptions of benefits and representation from local teachers' associations. In 2014, she began her administrative career as the Assistant Principal for Orchard View Intermediate. For the past 6 years, she has chaired and or coordinated several major operational teams within the school establishing and maintaining systems of academic and social supports for student success. She has an innate passion for education and is committed to maintaining a safe and conducive learning environment while serving as an instructional leader who will encourage the accountability of learning and achievement for every student.

A Message from Dr. Alfonso

It is an honor and privilege to have been the recommended candidate for Principal at Potomack Intermediate School. Over the years, I have been inspired by the great work accomplished at Potomack. I recognize some of the current challenges the school faces and plan to address those needs. Upon entry, my plan is to take opportunities to listen and learn from the staff, develop positive teams within the school, and establish support systems for student success with a focus on enhancing school climate by building upon our family and community connections. To start, my plan for Potomack Intermediate School is to establish centralized roles of support among the administrative team in order to lead with a clear and focused mission as outlined through the goals and action steps written in the Strategic Plan to achieve sustainable student growth for years to come. I am ready to embrace the pride and tradition of Potomack Intermediate School where the Potomack Eagles SOAR high!
